  1. Newspaper Publisher

Written by the company

Thetimes.co.uk hosts the digital edition of The Times, Britain’s oldest national daily newspaper, and its sister title The Sunday Times. The Times was founded in 1785 by the editor and publisher John Walter I, “to record the principal occurrences of the times” for the service of the public. It was called the Daily Universal Register for the first three years, until it rebranded as The Times in 1788 – the first newspaper in the world to use the Times name. In his first edition, John Walter I explained that “like a well-covered table, it should contain something suited to every palate” including politics, foreign affairs, matters of trade, legal trials, advertisements and “amusements”. In its tone and political neutrality, Walter reserved the right of the newspaper “to censure or applaud either [political party]” and to cover contending issues with respectful “fair argument”. More than 200 years on, these founding principles hold true today. The Times has supported both New Labour and the Conservatives in recent times and supported Remain in the 2016 EU referendum. The titles are currently the biggest selling quality print newspapers in the UK and in 2018 The Times was named Britain’s most trusted national newspaper by the Reuters Institute for Journalism at Oxford University. In 2019 The Times and The Sunday Times won the Daily and Sunday newspaper of the year categories at the British Press Awards among several other prizes for their writing, reporting, investigations and campaigns. Both papers are committed to driving digital innovation in all areas of their world-class journalism.

Scam - Please raise a charge dispute with your Bank

I signed up for a £1 trial subscription on 30/10/2025. After the trial ended, £30 was taken from my account for a full subscription that I did not knowingly intend to continue.
While the terms mention cancellation before the billing date, the jump from a £1 trial to a £30 charge was not made sufficiently clear at sign-up. I did not feel this was presented in a transparent or prominent way.
I contacted customer services and phoned twice to resolve this, but my refund request was refused. I have not used the paid subscription since the charge was taken.
I’ve now had to raise a dispute with my bank, which could have been avoided with a simple goodwill refund. Very disappointing experience over what should have been a straightforward issue.

Beware their automatic renewal

After a three month trial beginning in October ‘25, I realised I hadn’t given the requisite 2 days notice to cancel when they took £20 from my account. I cancelled immediately and thought they might refund the fee for a subscription I didn’t want but they were adamant that this wasn’t going to happen. There had been no reminder that the trial was coming to an end and the renewal reminder got forgotten in last year’s diary. Being in my 70s, sometimes I forget things I have to do in 3 months time…
Moreover, the cancellation process involves phoning them up and enduring the desperate sales pitch to try to get you to stay. It can’t be done online. Anyway, no more for me - I’ll never read the Times again.

A nightmare to deal with

I have been trying for over a week to downgrade my subscription to the Times and Sunday Times, Four emails have been sent and the only response is one I have just received which asks for information which they already have. There is something seriously wrong with the subscription department

Terrible - do not subscribe

Terrible. Signed up for a 6 month trial for one pound, and now they are claiming I need to pay their regular monthly fee until the end of that six month period. This is on top of having to call or email to cancel my subscription, which cannot be done in the app or website. I regularly subscribe to different reputable newspapers and magazines and have never had to deal with this level of rorting and unprofessionalism. Do not subscribe.

The Times app doesn't work well enough

The Times app on my android phone is an absolute nightmare! The headlines continually link to the wrong article - i thought it was worse in the morning but it's actually doing it all day long. I've complained to their customer service but recived no sensible answer/resolution and it is SO frustrating!

Joining the chorus of other reviewers here. Fan of the paper but the practices employed when it comes to subscription renewal options are underhand. I agreed a 12 month package to then be auto renewed with no notice at £26 per month and then up to £30 per month , again no notice given. Call centre staff clearly trained to apologise and issue platitudes but really the whole thing leaves a sour taste. What a shame as it just undermines the brand.

The customer is always wrong

The delivery agent never follows the delivery instructions which means the paper gets weather damaged or occasionally pilfered. Repeated requests to customer service have yielded nothing and now they refuse to intervene unless I can provide video proof of the agent “deliberately ignoring the instructions “. I feel like they think I’m lying.

Timewasters and tricksters

They make it so easy to sign up for their "special offer" online, but if you want to cancel your subscription you have to sit in a queue on the phone. Idiotic and mendacious practices.

Same experience as most people here

I got the student membership in October, which is £9.99 per month for three years. But they didn't respect the agreement, and they've charged me £30 per month for the last two months anyway. I could only cancel the subscription by calling, and 'definitely' change it to the student one. However, they just emailed me saying they will charge me £26 per month instead of the student subscription. This is mental!!

Annoying and ineffectively scripted retention team

I am a fan of the paper but their cancellation process leave a lot to be desired. Today I phoned to cancel as they were putting it up to £20 and I had been meaning to cancel at £15. I had to sit on hold for 10 mins (this is bonkers - you should be able to cancel from the app) before speaking to some young thing with a You Tube American accent and suffer her not listening, going through her script, pretending to talk to her manager, etc. When she came back with an offer of 15 and I had to explain that I had just told her that I had been meaning to cancel at 15 anyway, she abruptly said she'd cancel (what I wanted anyway) that I'd get a confirmation email. Trouble is the email never came. . So I will have to go through the whole thing again. She didn't do it I bet because I will negatively affect her retention stats. It's all quite pathetic. Poor show from The Times. Outgoing call timed at 14:42 - for 12 mins. January 14, 2026.

It's a huge pain to unsubscribe and the service itself is bad. The journalism lacks any semblance of insight or quality. The app itself does not integrate to articles online or from e-mail, meaning that I have to manually type in an article if I saw it online or in the daily e-mail.

Great content but dreadful customer service!

I thoroughly enjoyed the content and quality of the content produced by the Times on line having taken advantage of their discounted offer.
However, when the deal came to an end, the experience changed, the ability to stop or change the subscription is difficult and trying to speak to an operator is extremely tedious and frustrating.
After numerous attempts to resolve the issue, I am hoping that it has now been dealt with, although I’m not feeling confident….

Do not sign up for’offer’ - disgraceful

Do not sign up for’offer’ from the times newspaper I signed up in good faith online but when I saw how much the subscription was( £30 a month!) immediately tried to cancel. Like others I’m finding this impossible you don’t get through to the call centre and they don’t call you back. I’m appalled that a newspaper I thought was reputable is behaving in such a distasteful and low manner.

To anyone subscribed to the times do…

To anyone subscribed to the times do this.
Near end of subscription cancel the payments to times before they take a full subscription without pre warning ,that way they can’t take an amount you never wanted to pay.
I’ve been there!!

Cancellation - Appalling deception

Appalling. Wish I had checked this before taking the trial subscription. Same experience of many others here. Refusing to refund £30 because I didn’t cancel two days before the end of the trial. This condition is not stated in the welcome email and the FAQs on how to cancel doesn’t reference the terms or mention the two day advance notification requirement - only that you must call to cancel…can’t cancel by email. they also take payment on the day the trial ends with no notification - which prompted me to cancel. Deceptive practice. Happy to pursue this on behalf of anyone else in the same position. There are 900 reviews here and expect it is tip of the iceberg of those caught out.

AVOID!

Do not do the mistake to make a subscription with The Times. They make it hard to cancel and cannot cancel whenever you want even if wanting to pay early cancellation.

Subscription trap

Signed up for a 3 month digital trial. Have barely used it. Suddenly been charged £30 for a subscription I had forgotten about. No renewal notice or anything before this happened. No option to cancel on their website. Have to phone a contact number. Have tried several times and the queue is always full apparently and the line hangs up. Shocking. Can someone contact me please so I can cancel my subscription.
