Clarity required about fees and surcharges

Thrifty, you could do better.
Declare all fees accurately upfront.
Don't tell the customer the full insurance will be $60 and then charge them $83. That erodes trust.
Tell them in your quote what the Vehicle Rego Recovery and Administrative Recovery fees are for.
Make the requirement to overfill the fuel tank clear in your agreement and ensure your staff point it out when they go over the terms (this staff member didn't).
Most importantly, include GST in your quote - otherwise you're being misleading (and it appears deliberate).
Also, ensure your staff provide pre-hire condition photos (in this case they didn't do so - I was in pain and needed to get to a shop to buy pain relievers).
To anyone thinking of hiring from Thrifty (eg. if you have little choice), make sure you:
1. Take a screenshot of the online quote you find in your search results
2. If you get a subsequent quote over the phone, ensure it includes GST (unless you're exempt??)
3. When collecting the vehicle and signing the agreement, don't let the staff rush you before you're sure of all the details.
4. Ask for a copy of the terms & conditions before signing. Read them. :)
5. Make sure they provide photos of the vehicle before you drive it away.
6. Fill the tank to overfull according to Thrifty's instructions (which may not be made obvious).

Mixed (inconsistent) hiring experiences through this brand in Australia

Note: The original operational structure of Thrifty Australia has since been rebranded as SIXT Australia. The master franchise agreement with Thrifty originally operated by NRMA had since expired and the NRMA have changed over to now be operating as SIXT Australia.

Originally had mixed and varying experiences when NRMA were operating the master franchise for Thrifty in Australia. Reasonable experiences with their Airport based branches in terms of pricing, customer service and quality of the vehicle received.

However, had a pretty irregular experience with their franchisee, Lawrence vic pty ltd renting out of one of their suburban Melbourne branches where I caught them publishing their own reviews pretending to be happy customers and applying charges clearly outside of the written agreement - After initially some push back (from them), me advising I would now be commencing further action under the ACL immediately motivated them to promptly sort these issues out in haste, thankfully.

Very poor customer service

Very poor customer service
They are a franchise owned business
They took a $400 swipe of credit card that was a deposit that took 4 weeks to return to my account
There was an extra charge of $47 after handing car in with a full tank of fuel and cleaned by us
If I had not checked my account This would not have been returned .also extra 10% discount offer not applied and no GPS unit
It took 3 weeks to make them understand the issue

Generally good service

Generally, reasonable service. Cars available when promised, condition reasonable, priced fairly, no issues on return of vehicle. Nice to have nothing to talk about.

Very rude customer service

Very rude customer service, especially by one lady by the name Cara, who was utterly and extremely RUDE and was treating me like a naughty school girl USING a voice of authority AND told me that there was no one else that could help me PLUS I was wasting their time and just to put the cherry on the cake SHE actually hung up the phone on me 3 TIME. BUT they had the audacity to charge my credit card $165 for Road Side Assistance, it was not my fault that they gave me a FAULTY car with engine & battery issues. AND they refuse to give me my money back.....WHAT A BUNCH OF BULLIES THEY ARE....KEEP AWAY FROM THIS COMPANY AND NRMA SHOULD LOOK FOR A BETTER PROVIDER RATHER THAN SHIFTY THRIFTY.

Do not book with thrifty

Do not book with thrifty. We prebooked a car for a 6 day road trip at Avalon airport and they denied us a car and left us stranded for two hours with a reason that they changed their policies and are not allowing international license... We ended up spending a lot to get a car last min from Melbourne city.

International customers, be ware, you won't get your car.

They told me that every Thrifty branch is a separate business under franchise and every branch makes its own rules. Well, that's completely useless. Thrifty at Avalon airport refused to issue us the booked car because apparently the driver's license needed a translation, even though the license was in both languages, English + in national language. As far as license language goes the thrifty terms and conditions state only that license must be printed with "Roman Alphabet" (English is in Roman alphabet, no?) else would need a translation. Thrifty in Melbourne City was happy with the license but there was a booking glitch (not a fault of City branch). Thrifty at Avalon had a car, so we went there by taxi but they did not like the license...

As a result they refused to refund the whole booking fee for 5 day rental. We lost 1 of 5 days of our road trip, which is a lot considering we were in Australia only for 15 days. Spent extra fortune on Taxis. Ended up getting a car from Europcar to salvage what we could. Thrifty - Never Again!

DO NOT BOOK WITH THRIFTY!!!

We purchased a car rental last Christmas via Expedia. The purchase confirmation said 'NZD$179 including all fees and taxes'.

Upon picking the car up at Melbourne City, I was told that the price was incorrect - there should be a 1-way rental fee - but given the wording of the purchase confirmation Thrifty would stand true to the $NZD179 - but they couldn't leally let me take the car out of the building unless I sign the rental agreement (which had the full price of AU$600+) and I also had to pay this full price, then claim a refund.

The iPad was broken so I couldn't sign electronically, so I was forced to sign a paper document, and pay the high price on Credit Card.

We had an amazing Christmas holiday, and when we returned home I began the refund process. Thrifty lost the paper rental agreement that I signed, and said the money I was charged was the correct amount (not the NZ$179 that Expedia confirmed) and there was no chance of a refund. The only way I could challenge it any further was to hire a lawyer - and with a young family, I simply don't have the time or money.

DO NOT USE THRIFTY, OR EXPEDIA IF YOU ARE RENTING A CAR IN AUSTRALIA. Their handling of this issue cast a shadow on my beautiful family holiday, and we've had to save to clear our excess credit card debt, due to their poor processes, and dishonesty.
