Find this very effective 'though it is comparatively expensive, consequently I wrap a little cotton cloth around the jag before wrapping this on top (thus reducing the amount needed). To me its worth the money knowing my guns are going into the cabinet in the best condition I can achieve.

It works quite well with some bore cleaner as a first clean to remove the worst of the residue - make sure to use the rough side for this and then reverse it to run the smooth side through. It is tricky to determine how much to use to get the correct size of swab but 9 inches is about right for a 12 bore gun.
