UPDATE:
Following my original review, senior management stepped in, apologised and arranged for the works to be completed at their cost. A new base was installed, the charger has now been fitted and all cabling has been finished properly. The team who attended afterwards were professional and the installation is now complete.
While the initial process was extremely frustrating and poorly handled, I do appreciate that the company ultimately took responsibility and resolved the situation.
Original:
This has been one of the most frustrating and poorly handled installation processes I have ever experienced.
We arranged for a concrete base to be professionally installed in advance for a post-mounted EV charger.
The base was properly excavated and poured to a depth of 300mm by an experienced groundworker.
From the first visit onwards, the attending engineer repeatedly found new reasons not to proceed.
At different visits we were told:
• the cable would be a “trip hazard” and needed to be covered – despite the fact that the surrounding block paving and final finish were already arranged to be completed immediately after installation
• the concrete base looked as though it had been poured on top of block paving (which is completely untrue)
• the base was not acceptable – despite no measurements being taken and no attempt being made to verify the depth
The markings visible on the side of the concrete were simply imprints from temporary edging and surrounding block paving used during the pour to keep the concrete neat. They were not bricks underneath the slab.
Because of the claims made on site, we physically exposed the side of the base ourselves and confirmed approximately 230–240mm of continuous solid concrete, with no paving, bedding layer or sand underneath at all.
This was clearly explained to the company, together with the fact that the base was excavated and poured to 300mm.
Despite this, the company then changed their position and stated that the base must be 600 x 600 and between 600–900mm deep before they would proceed.
This requirement had never been mentioned previously and appears to be an internal company policy rather than anything that had been assessed or measured on site.
The real issue here is not the quality of the groundwork.
The real issue is that:
• no proper inspection was carried out
• no measurements were taken
• and every visit resulted in a new problem being raised
We were also later advised by other engineers that the charger could have been wall-mounted perfectly easily, making the entire post and base situation unnecessary in the first place.
Communication from management was minimal and slow, and although polite, offered no practical resolution.
In short, this job became a cycle of repeated visits, shifting requirements and refusal to properly verify what was already in place.
It caused significant delay, disruption and stress for what should have been a straightforward domestic EV charger installation.
I would strongly advise anyone considering this company to clarify in writing, in advance, exactly what groundwork specifications they require and whether they are willing to install on an existing base – as this was not handled fairly or consistently in our case.
We were also left with loose and exposed cabling both outside and inside our home, including cables hanging down inside a fitted wardrobe and unfinished wiring left behind after the aborted installation. This was left in place despite the job not being completed, leaving us with an untidy and potentially unsafe situation that we now have to resolve ourselves.
