Warning to those considering Widex…

Warning to those considering Widex SmartRic with portable charger, if you require the additional outer-ear support threads to hold the aids in place. After several weeks of experience, dialogue with my specialist and their correspondence with Widex about why my aids were not properly charging, it transpires (now apparently confirmed by Widex) that the charger may not work properly if support threads are attached. They can cause the aids to lift out of their charging bay (mine often only charge to 80-90 pc, don't fully power off, and whistle when in the charger). I'm told this wasn't identified by Widex in the product testing phase, which says something about Widex R&D standards. They are nice aids otherwise but my advice obviously is to look elsewhere if you need the extra ear support threads to hold the aids in place, because you wont get the full functionality of the portable charger.

AND a word on the WIDEX app, which is needed to adjust volume and settings. Font sizes for eg battery levels are so tiny I need to take a screenshot and expand it just to read the battery levels! Willing to bet a huge percentage of Widex users have eyesight issues too. This appears to be a company that doesn't bother to test its products and apps on real users.

I was looking for a quality hearing aid that has an additional bit of kit that would allow me to tune in to conversations in a noisy environment. I can now put my “hearing assist” on the table when I’m at, for instance, a pub quiz, it meant that I could hear my team mates but not the background noise in the pub.
Not cheap but worth it

Widex non-Bluetooth - Bluetooth hearing aids

Having spent the better part of 4k purchasing top of the range Widex Moment Bluetooth hearing aids imagine my horror when discovering they are not Bluetooth compatible at all. That's correct the Bluetooth hearing aids that are not Bluetooth compatible, you couljdn't make that up. I use ITE (in The Ear) hearing aids and apparently Bluetooth is only available in Behind The Ear aids. I defy anyone to read over their website advertising and show where this fact is made clear. The sound quality of Widex is exceptional but somehow I feel totally cheated by not having the benefit of Bluetooth connection especially as I had made this a priority when ordering.

Don’t buy Widex hearing aids

I purchased Widex Evoke 440 hearing aids some 3 years ago with Silver Zinc rechargeable batteries at a cost of £4800. They have proven fairly useless, requiring the Evoke app to constantly adjust the aids audio settings to suit the conversation or TV in different surroundings. Bluetooth works fine when listening to TV but otherwise the perceived sound is always muffled & distorted. Recently one aid stopped working & wouldn't recharge, I had it returned to Widex for repair, who advised it could be repaired but they no longer support the old Silver Zinc rechargeable batteries or charging stations & have switched to a new Zpower rechargeable system. This means I will now only be able to use non rechargeable Zinc Air batteries which last a couple of days at best. It’s a bloody disgrace there is no way I can afford another £5k to buy a new pair. My advice is don’t buy Widex. As an update because I had no working hearing aids I purchased a pair of Beurer BTE hearing rechargeable amplifiers from Amazon for £140. They arrived today & they are simply fantastic much better than the Widex Evoke 440 aids. No distortion, no muffling, no whistling, no having to constantly adjust or change programmes. They look identical to Widex aids, come with all accessories & different size ear plugs, a box charging station with 2x spare rechargeable battery packs & you can charge 4 batteries at a time. They even have an on/off button on each aid where the flimsy Evokes can only be switched on & off by opening & closing the flimsy battery case.
