Approach with caution

I purchased an “immaculate example” VW Golf GTI from Harry at Winslade Motor Co ltd for £18750.
Gave it a good internal valet when I got home as this was an additional cost from the dealer, think it would be standard practice during a pandemic. Decided to rewash the outside while I was at it, during this wash I took off the top layers of polish and wax to discover the car was scratched on every panel even the roof!! Took it VW for an estimate to get it right and it was quoted at £3300 worth of damage.

In addition, there was also a floor mat missing and the spare key battery had gone.

I wrote to the dealer to set out all the issues and requested a partial refund to cover the cost of getting the car into the ‘immaculate’ condition that it was advertised as being in, or I wanted to return the car for a full refund. The bottom line is, I would never have paid this amount for a car in such poor condition.

The dealer responded promptly to confirm that I could return the car for a full refund. No queries or issues were raised, take from that what you will!

Overall, they were pleasant to deal with and did the decent thing in providing me with a full refund without issue. However, the car should never have been described as being in ‘immaculate’ condition and it was incredibly dishonest of them to try and conceal all the scratches, chips and marks with layers of polish and wax. If I had not washed the car for a couple of weeks, I could have found myself in a very difficult position. Sadly, I do not feel that they can be trusted to conduct transactions in an honest manner.
