This gives you the safety, security, and peace of mind that comes with 24/7 support, and expert clinical supervision. While overseas, you’ll live in one of Work the World’s spacious, social, and secure private houses. Living with other students from a range of countries and healthcare backgrounds creates an atmosphere of friendship and camaraderie like nowhere else. You’ll enjoy meals freshly prepared each day by in-house chefs, as well as the now-famous weekly barbecues. Free language lessons in the house will help you communicate and interact with patients more effectively to get the most out of your placement. Your clinical experience runs from Monday to Friday, leaving your evenings and weekends free for exploration and adventure. Work the World’s expert in-country teams will offer tips for sightseeing and trips that you can take whilst you’re away. You could go on safari in the Serengeti, trek to Everest Base Camp, sunbathe on tropical beaches, and explore ancient mountaintop temples.

Once in a lifetime opportunity

From beginning to end, work the world provided such an amazing experience which will leave me with memories I will never forget. Even before I arrived in the Philippines I felt reassured and at ease. I would highly recommended.

Overall it was a wonderful experience

Overall it was a wonderful experience! All work the world staff went out of their way to help make this an amazing experience for me. The hospital experience as well went very smooth, although I found I had to be pretty aggressive in asking to do things or I would just stand there. Loved it overall!

An experience

I went to Takoradi, Ghana with work the world. Overall, I had a good time, met some great people who were also there and learnt a lot about the country. Met some friends I will have for life.
I will say their were some challenges which I have discussed with WTW, I had a rough week the first week and into the second week with my placement. Staff weren’t so welcoming. However, that would not skew my opinion on recommending it for other people as it is a once in a life time experience. There were some issues but things that cannot be helped.
The staff in the house were great on a whole, some little issues with security on one occasion and also, I personally found it hard to approach situations with some of the programme leads in Ghana as it felt like it wasn’t getting anywhere.
Overall I would recommend, if I was to go again I would do just 2 weeks or 3 as I was ready to go home after that!

I had the most amazing time doing my Midwifery placement as an already graduated Midwife in Ghana, Takoradi! If I could've, I would've stayed longer, that's for sure.

Had the best time in Ghana

Had the best time in Ghana and will be an experience I will never forget! I also did the village week which I would highly recommend to anyone willing to throw themselves in to it 100%. Would definitely go back again one day. Before going I was worried about the food, not knowing people and not feeling supported but all of my worries soon disappeared after arrival.
DO IT!

Life time experience filled with love

I didn’t know what to expect when I left the Netherlands for Ghana. But after five weeks and being home for 4 weeks, the only thing I want is to go back. The internship was really great, the midwives I saw have a lot of knowledge. But you’re going to see differences between Ghana and your home country. This can be difficult sometimes but you will always come home to the blue house. And there is a group that supports you. You talk about your day in the swimmingpool and in the weekends you have lovely trips. So the internship can be intens but it compensates with the fun you have during the week with the other students. And then there is the staff and other Ghanaian people. They are all filled with love and ready to share this love with everybody. After this trip I have a lot of new friends, but we call each other sisters. That is how close we got to each other or did we integrated good in the Ghanaian culture?

Absolutely amazing experience

Absolutely amazing experience. Traveling to ghana allowed me to see the difference in nursing from managing patient to delivering care. I was exposed to conditions that enhanced my learning which I wouldn't have been able to experience within the UK. The hospital was supportive and are happy to teach you and encourage you to be involved, they are happy for you to observe different teams to broaden your knowledge. The team that work for work the world are incredible they are so supportive and reliable. The in country team provide you with a detailed induction and ensure you feel safe and secure within your setting, they are on call 24/7 and provide great education! And a little secret- they love to dance!!!!
Not only did we go to the hospital daily there is plenty of time to have fun and explore ghana , beaches ,markets , history , safari.
It's a beautiful country with beautiful people it's not just a placemeny, you become part of the Ghanaian family !!!

I can’t recommend work the world enough…

I can’t recommend work the world enough from the very beginning the team are so supportive and helpful during the whole process. And the same support and guidance is offered as soon as you land in Ghana. You are greeted at the airport by one of the work the world workers and really made to feel at home from the get go. You will have an experience of a lifetime and really feel like you’ve made a difference. You will make friends for life. You have so much opportunity to travel and explore on the weekends which the team are there to help plan and make available. If you are considering an overseas placement I would 100% recommend Ghana it’s a beautiful country and the blue house really is a home from home. Thank you Work the World for this amazing experience!

Ghana internship 2021

I went to Ghana in the summer of 2021 with Work The World. It was a fantastic experience, not only because the people there were so warm and friendly, but also because everything was arranged down to the last detail. From the pick up at the airport, the bus ride to the house to the internships in the hospital. If we had a problem, we could go straight to the program director Joe. Frank made sure that our weekends were always well filled and that we could visit the nicest places in the country. A super educational experience that everyone should definitely do! I have not regretted it for a moment!

5 week Physiotherapy placement

I carried out a 5 week Physiotherapy placement in Takoradi, Ghana.
I thoroughly enjoyed my overall experience and I think that it has assisted in allowing me to gain relevant skills that I will be able to use once qualified. The culture shock definitely hit me in some forms especially as I have chosen to undertake a healthcare role to help people and couldn't always do that due to the way the healthcare system and money works over there. However being able to work alongside the physios at Effia Nkwanta was a great experience, they were very open to questions and to letting you get involved and also supported us if we wanted to observe other parts of the hospital and see how they worked.

The Work the World team were second to none, Becky was very readily available and engaged on the lead up to going away and was happy to help in what ever way she could to make the process of getting organised flow smoother. It was also lovely to have a debrief with her after the placement as she was one of the people who had been in correspondence with myself (alongside Alisdair) since the idea of travelling for placement occurred.
The housekeeping and cooking team (Israel, Desmond, Sarah and Ophelia) were amazing also. It was always nice to have them around the house so often as you got to bond with them in the same way that you did the other students. It also meant that if you were having any issues they were there to talk to and they were more than accommodating. The food was also great, it was a shame that we were not able to try more local dishes but there was a good variety that we got to try over the 5 weeks.
Joe and Frank were our programme leads whilst in country and were also open, friendly and helpful. They aided in getting us set up around the hospital and also around Ghana so that we could also experience the country. They were always willing to have a chat and catch up and also for myself were a safe space when I found that I was struggling with the experience.
Frank also lead our weekly language lessons which was a great collaborative experience meaning we got to learn relevant Fante that we could use on placement and around Takoradi.
I think learning a bit of the language added a nice touch as it meant you could communicate a bit better with patients as well as people in the street and they appreciated the effort you put in even if you did get a few laughs for very bad pronunciation.

Overall I would 100% recommend Work the World for anyone looking into elective placements abroad. It was a wonderful experience not only to put on your CV but also to have as a bit of general life experience and I think it helps to make you a more rounded healthcare professional overall.

Amazing support and Journey thanks to Work the World

Amazing support from start of the process to the finish. Me and a friend were panicking when our flight was delayed as we would miss the pick up but they sorted it out for us within minutes. Even when my bag was delayed they made sire someone would be there to collect it for me and rhen brought too me despite being 6 hours away. The experience was amazing and they always kept in touch throughout our stay making sure we were okay and getting the experience of a lifetime. They even rang me when I got back to get feedback and make sire I had a great time.

The Work the World team is so approachable, and cares about each individual who travels with them. I would go back in an instant. My experience in Ghana taught me so much, introduced me to a great house and hospital environment, and allowed me to work with the wonderful Work the World staff.
