Absolutely Disgusting Experience – Avoid XOYO at All Costs
I had one of the worst nightclub experiences ever at XOYO and feel it’s important to speak out. My friend (a woman of East Asian descent) and I (a man of brown descent) attended the BRAT event on the evening of 7th March into the early hours of 8th March. We had early release tickets and were genuinely excited for a good night – instead, we were met with rude, unprofessional, and discriminatory behaviour from the security team.
Upon arrival, the bouncer immediately denied us entry, claiming my friend was “too drunk” – which she absolutely was not. He told us to return in 15 minutes. When we complied, he randomly changed it to 1 hour – despite last entry being 1am and it already being 12:30am. In front of us was a large group of white individuals who clearly appeared more intoxicated, yet they were let in without issue. This discrepancy was impossible to ignore and gave strong racist undertones.
When we politely rejoined the queue to clarify why we had to wait, the same bouncer became aggressive, swearing at us, saying we were “taking the f***ing piss” and refused us entry again. His behaviour was completely unprovoked, and we were in shock. After 10 minutes, he allowed us to queue again, but this time scrutinised our IDs to a ridiculous extent, questioning the validity of my friend’s internationally accepted ID. It was demeaning and completely unnecessary.
We later asked the bouncer his background – he said he was half Mexican, half Filipino. Regardless, the power-tripping from him and other security staff was unbearable. Throughout the night, we noticed white attendees were allowed to linger outside the club without issue, but we were repeatedly harassed and told to leave – even when we were well away from the venue on a public street. One white Eastern European-looking man from security aggressively swore at us, telling us to “f*** off” for simply standing on a side road. It was unacceptable.
The entire night was tainted. The club was dirty, the vibe was off, and the security staff ruined the experience with their unprofessionalism and abuse of power. It was giving ‘no power at home so let’s abuse it at work’ energy.
I will be reporting XOYO’s security staff to the Security Industry Authority (SIA), and I encourage anyone else who has been mistreated to do the same. This venue needs urgent undercover investigation into how their staff operate. There is no proper complaints process inside – they simply threaten to throw you out if you speak up.
Avoid XOYO – especially if you are a person of colour. The disrespect, discrimination, and power-tripping behaviour are not worth your time or money.
