Oh my goodness, this place was amazing. Service fabulous. In the evening when it got cooler fires were lit and hot water bottles intended. Nothing was too much trouble. Great location for both golden monkey and gorilla trekking! ….and the bird watching whilst chilling for the afternoon was just great.

I would give this lodge 10 stars if I could. What an outstanding place to stay!!!! We were totally pampered at Gahinga. Upon arrival, the manager and staff greeted us, introduced themselves, and we were given a private butler. Throughout our stay, all our needs/requests were promptly cared for. It was clear the staff was determined to ensure we had a memorable experience with them. For example: when we requested early breakfast delivered to our room at 6:15 AM, our butler and two assistants knocked on our door and sang to us! On our last night, the entire staff (including the chef) brought out a cake for my husband's birthday and sang and danced. And when we returned from our gorilla treks, cocktails were waiting for us. I should also note we very much enjoyed our spacious room with not one but two fireplaces. Also, this hotel has an excellent spa and a very talented chef who can provide exceptional vegan meals. Wonderful, wonderful hotel experience. Can express how much we appreciated it.
Mount Gahinga Lodge was the third and final lodge on my wonderful 10-day gorilla tracking extravaganza. It was also my favorite for so many reasons. The cottages were true homes away from home, with a comfy 'living room' in addition to the bedroom, each with its own fire place. Always stocked with wine, beer and snacks, at no extra charge, every bungalow offers the breathtaking Virunga volcanoes as a 'close enough to touch' backdrop. The staff was lovely and my personal butler, Barbara, genuinely gracious and caring. The gorilla tracking was terrific - the Nyakagezi gorilla group inhabiting Mgahinga National Park boast 3 silverbacks, an unusual and entertaining family composition. The grounds of the lodge are gorgeous and beautifully landscaped. A comfortable walk away from the lodge is a Batwa community that Volcanoes Safaris, owner of Mount Gahinga Lodge, helps to sustain. One evening during my stay, the lodge hosted an outside bar-b-q and invited the Batwa Chief and some of the elders to join the lodge guests for a wonderful dinner. I plan a return stay at Mount Gahinga Lodge. Top on my list for next time is to hike up at least one of the volcanoes!
This property is amazing. We stayed in one of the VIP Bandas and the detail in construction and decor was impressive. First of all, we arrived and we were immediately introduced to our butler Gerald. The staff took our bags, while Gerald gave us an overview of the property. Then he escorted us to our Banda, gave us a cell phone so that we could call him if we needed anything from the main lodge. Our Banda was at the very back of the property, which gave us total privacy. We have views of the Virunga mountains from every room, including our shower. There were two beautiful fire places in our banda, one in the living room, and the other in our bedroom. The shower was made of smooth pumice. We also had a porch which faced the mountains. The lodge staff were extremely friendly. They took us on a hike to see old calderas in town. The food was excellent, and the chef (I forget her name) did an amazing job sharing Ugandan cuisine with us! The staff build fires for us inside the lodge and outside. One night we even dined outside so we could see the stars. It was so clear we could even see satellites zooming by. The property also came with a spa, but we were enjoying our banda so much we never made it there. The lodge is a quick 5 min walk on a private trail from the national park. We were able to go on a golden monkey trek and the Sabyinyo gorge hike. Gorilla trekking was also available, but we had already seen gorillas in Bwinidi. I would recommend this lodge to anyone looking for a mix of relaxation and outdoor/national park activities.
