Really bad overall
One of the worst customer services. Called them 2 times for different issues and the people handling customer service were extremely rude and didn’t listen properly. Got my application rejected for no reason and when I applied I was showed that my subtotal is $0 due to a promo but still was charged $25 on my card. This is literally deceiving. And the app verification through mobile phone never works. Never use this service if you have any alternative!
Appalling app
Appalling app, so confusing, unclear about which cars and types are which. Filters don’t work properly and the whole experience is utterly confusing.
The only saving grace was the lady on the telephone, who was very lively polite and tried everything she could to try and help.
I’ve spent 30 minutes and spent £20+ and still can’t find a car.
Management at Zipcar seriously your business needs some help.
Profoundly Disappointed with Zipcar
I had an absolutely devastating experience with Zipcar on Christmas Day. Seven weeks ago, I booked a car to be picked up at 1:00 PM on December 25th, planning to visit my 84-year-old parents, bring them Christmas dinner, and spend the holidays with them. This was a critical trip for me.
When I arrived at the pickup location, I discovered that my booking had been cancelled without any prior notice—no email, no phone call, no alert. Nothing. To make matters worse, when I called customer service, the only “solution” offered was to pick up a car hours later in downtown Toronto, leaving me stranded and unable to reach my parents on time. This delay would have meant they’d spend Christmas evening alone, waiting for a meal they wouldn’t have received.
Left with no choice, I had to pay for an expensive taxi to make it to them. This completely ruined my day, caused me undue stress, and left me feeling abandoned by a company I trusted to deliver a reliable service.
I understand things can go wrong, but the total lack of communication or contingency planning from Zipcar is inexcusable. As a company built on providing dependable transportation, this failure undermines its entire purpose.
Because of this experience, I’ve cancelled my membership and will never use Zipcar again. They’ve completely lost my trust. If you’re considering Zipcar, think twice—this is not a service you can count on when it really matters.
I was kicked out of the app
I was kicked out of the app. Could not log in & they had to unlock the car & lock when I call and wait to speak to someone. I wanted to extend my booking so by me not being able to log in we had to rebook. Somehow someone was able to overbook. Zipcar called like it was my fault when it is them & their system’s fault for technical issues. I’ll never suggest or use this car company again. Biggest inconvenience, lost money, my child & I was left to freeze in the cold for 5 hours.
Unreliable & Dirty Cars & Frustrating Customer Support
Zipcar failed to deliver its service, leaving me frustrated and causing me to miss a crucial meeting.
Early this morning, I was in a rush for a critical meeting in Springfield, MA. I arrived at the Zipcar vehicle, located 15-20 minutes from my apartment, only to find the key fob's battery dead, making it impossible to start the car.
I contacted Zipcar's customer support and spoke with a representative named Portia. Despite explaining that I was in a hurry and noting that two Zipcar vehicles were located right across the street, the only option offered was a vehicle situated another 20 minutes away. This solution was unacceptable given the time constraints, and as a result, I missed my meeting because Zipcar failed to provide an acceptable solution.
This is the second time Zipcar has let me down. The vehicles are often dirty and frequently show signs of damage. This experience has left me profoundly frustrated with the service.
Going to uninstall
Bad experience. Dirty car. Unexpected charges. Cost way more than regular can rental services or calling an Uber. Going to uninstall.
Failure at every level. Cancelled subscription
There is only one good thing about my woeful experience with Zipcar, and that’s the kind gentleman that took my call after and say of stress and frustration.
The car was filthy, had no petrol and needed a service and there was no fuel card so I had to fill it up and outlay the money.
The bullying via in app messages about $50 fines for not leaving it with fuel, not leaving it clean or being back a minute late were exhausting.
The pictures tell the true picture.
A great concept that relies on the decency of members. #fail
I thought it was great
I thought it was great. The car was ready, the car was clean, and easy to get to.
AVOID USING ZIPCAR AT ALL COSTS
AVOID USING ZIPCAR AT ALL COSTS. I've had a truly awful experience with ZIPCAR in London. They wrongfully charged me £145 which they took from my account with no prior warning for a "traffic violation" that was their own fault. And they "accidentally" took that payment 9 times, meaning they have stolen over £1000 of my money straight from my account. I called up several times over the span of two weeks and they refuse to refund the money. They tell me a customer service rep will call me back and then no one does. This is awful service and a really dodgy way to make money. Whatever you do do not give them access to your bank account, they will steal your money.
I just had the worst experience ever…
I just had the worst experience ever with Zipcar definitely will not be using their services ever again in life. Picked up the first car picked it up on a Friday used it about four days. They provided me with 200 miles per day so that was 800 miles that was given to me they claim that I drove over 1000 miles even though I had the mileage tracker on on my phone because I know how these car services do. They told me that my mileage tracker was incorrect and that theirs was correct. Then on top of that the day after I kick the car up an alert popped up when I cranked the car stating that I was 132 miles overdue for an oil change. So then after taking that car back, I picked up another car and there was some strange knocking noise from the undercarriage of the vehicle so I ended up taking that one back Picked up another vehicle and the bearings on the wheels were bad it was making out loud humming noise, zipcar does not do any maintenance on their vehicles which interns makes driving conditions, unsafe for drivers. The price per miles over is ridiculous with this company and they charged me 50 for being 2 minutes late and they charged me a 139 towing fee because their car was unsafe to drive. Completely ridiculous. Just going to use Turo or Getaround next time.
Zipcar dodgy tactics
When signing up to Zipcar , got charged for comprehensive most expensive plan rather than the basic one I wanted although I opted for the cheap plan.
Van was dirty & damaged
I recently rented a Zipcar at 12:30 PM…
I recently rented a Zipcar at 12:30 PM to drive for Uber, but the experience was a complete disaster. While completing Uber rides, the car unexpectedly shut off and wouldn't restart. I immediately contacted Zipcar, and a representative named Inez informed me that a tow truck would be dispatched. I was also told that once the car was returned to its home location, my rental would be transferred to another vehicle. I ended up waiting for four hours, calling for updates every hour, only to receive vague and unhelpful responses. Finally, at 5:30 PM, after speaking with Zipcar support again, I was told the car would need to be towed and that I would have to find my own way home. They assured me I'd be refunded for the unused rental time, but I explained that I had essentially been stuck for over five hours and never actually got to use the car. Despite this, the roadside assistance representative said there was no way to transfer my rental and reiterated I'd only get a refund for the hours I didn't use. By 8:30 PM, there was still no tow truck, no update, and no resolution. Frustrated, I asked to be removed from the rental so I could rent another car and try to salvage my day. Zipcar disconnected my account from the vehicle, and I caught an Uber to the new rental location--30 minutes away in the rain, costing me $28.37. When I arrived at 9:00 PM for my new rental, the car wasn't even there. By 9:45 PM, I was still waiting. When I called customer service, they gave me the same options: wait for the car or request a refund that would take up to seven days to process. To make matters worse, they previously charged me a $40 gas fee, despite the car being returned with the required 1/4 tank of gas. I disputed this over two weeks ago but haven't received a response because, apparently, their managers only handle these issues via email and are never available. This has been one of the worst experiences I've ever had. If you're considering Zipcar, don't waste your money. You're better off paying for a traditional rental car where you'll at least get guaranteed service.
Update: they offered me a refund of $11.03
BEWARE OF THE EXPENSIVE/OBSCURE ONBOARDING PROCESS
The onboarding process was a total disaster: just one of many examples—they claimed I didn't meet the minimum age requirement. I'm 60; since when did that become too young ? And to top it off, they made me pay for this chaos. Seriously, go with Turo instead.

It’s convenient and easy to access vehicles Have a nice experience when calling to report vehicles with smoke. I’m not a smoker. Just wish others would have the same courteous to keep vehicle smoke free. I’m enjoy using there services.

Attempted to hire a car in USA car had number plate removed several dents couldn't get in as they couldn't contact us as we had uk number. They said a manager would call they didn't. Lost membership cost and time as only had a few days in America. Awful experience.
Zip cars are ok
Zip cars are ok. The prices are expensive & the quality of the car isn’t matching the price! They are definitely overpriced! An they have a limited quantity so the choices aren’t many. The weekend prices are ridiculously high and normally they give only 200 miles so if ur ubering/doordashing you will go over a they will charge u an expensive fee! Im starting to think they aren’t worth it! Before I started I was ok until they started with all these additional fees!
Terrible Smelling Cars
I usually use Zipcar to get home from college which is about a 3 hour drive. Overall the cars are in good shape and perform well. And the service is a fairly good price. But I have received a car two times in a row (both different vehicles) and they have smelled like cigarette smoke. These are supposed to be nonsmoking vehicles and users that smoke are supposed to be fined. I always complain about the smell during the inspection. But on the second time I had enough. I didn’t want to smell cigarettes on my entire 3 hour drive. So I had to buy air fresheners and spray. When I contacted Zipcar they refused to compensate me for my trip other than giving me a 1 hour ride credit, which is next to nothing. I was very disappointed in their customer service. I don’t know if I will ever use their service again.
