A terrible company to deal with

A terrible company to deal with. Zero customer service and would NOT recommend. Keep away. They have charged our credit card for no apparent reason since coming home from the US. Also as we could not get into car and it tool an hour to get through to it at a cost almost 100 euro in roaming. Never again.

Zipcar has lost my business for good.

I've been a Zipcar user for two decades in NYC. Everything great has vanished. They routinely switch cars on you, often to cars very far away. My most recent reservation will be my last. I had to switch cars 3 times before I could start my trip. The first car wouldn't start and the second broke down after a few miles. The car that worked had a check engine light on. Zipcar maintenance and reliability has plummeted and I no longer feel safe driving in a Zipcar.

I would avoid them

I would avoid them. I was charged without permission.

Before committing to anything, I had already been charged. They are not trust worthy.

Scam

I had a $0 annual fee membership, and they changed it to $77 without notifying me. What a scam.

This company commits fraud

This company commits fraud. I was going to open an account and decided not to since I would be charged a $25 application fee and $5:50 service fee just to open the account. I never even read the terms of agreement nor did I check off on the box and authorize a payment to be taken. Not even 3 minutes after logging out of the account, I was charged without my authorization. I immediately called the customer service line and was greeted with the most rude and obnoxious person you ever want to meet. She blatantly cut me off and had a atrociously nasty attitude with me asking her why I was charged when I didn't authorize the charge. She told me she wasn't going to repeat herself and after asking for a manager she told me I would get a call back and did not explain why I could not be transferred to a manager immediately. After asking her several times to be transferred she purposely hung up on me without hesitation. Please think twice about who you do business with as this company is very much committing fraud and not being apologetic about it nor do they give a care. I will be following a complaint in every way possible because people do not deserve this kind of service especially for an unauthorized charge to their account without consent, approval, or notice. This is mortifying that companies would even do this and act in this manner. I would give no stars if I could.

1/ not worth it

1. Expensive
2.location pick up - Went to pick up my car and it wasn’t in the location. I had to call twice to find where the car was. It was blocks away, parked on a random street, not a Zipcar location. I asked why can’t the app update in real time. It doesn’t have the ability to actually tell you where the car is. A major flag.
3. Service - had to ask to extend my hours bc it was over 30 mins to talk to someone, locate, and go there (added cost and time for me$ and they didn’t offer I had to ask
4. Credit - I asked to apply a credit bc I’m late, it’s inefficient and they said they would but didn’t apply it
5. Total charge- it took me over 30 mins to find the car, with the added 30 mins a service provider put on, I had to talk to them, and find the car. Looking at my total bill I was billed $50 late, and and added $21 hst NOT disclosed in the upfront costs.

Overall a horrible model that gouges its members and there are zero member benefits. Gas is not a bonus. Common. Set a reasonable price and let ppl fill base on use.

Never thought I would give a one star…

Never thought I would give a one star review to Zipcar as I have been a supporter of the share economy. Sold my car recently and was excited about using Zipcar. From the onset it has been a complete disappointment.

I was able to sign up with a non UK phone number but could not receive the sms code. Immediately I checked with a staff about the concern twice. Both times the replies were urging me to complete payment first. I did that, and after I paid I was finally told that only UK and US number can receive SMS code. Then why was I able to sign up with a non uk and non us number and only disclosed after I paid!? I tried to change to a UK number but I could only do so by receiving a SMS code, which had been the issue. I called the customer service and no one answered. Finally I was able to get to someone, and went through a lengthy process to change the phone number. But the hassle was not over yet. At pick up time I was next to the car, on time, but could not unlock the car. I called the customer service again, turned bluetooth on and off and on, closed and reopened app, deleted and downloaded app again, turned phone on and off, the app still showed that I am “out of range”. I was just standing right next to the vehicle but the zipcar map showed that I am away at the vehicle. Where the location of the car showed ok the zipcar map is an inaccessible area under construction. At this point I would be 20 mins late to my event. The CS offered me another car which is a 9 min walk from this car. It is raining, and again, I am already late.

This whole thing is a complete let down and a waste of my time. The verdict from Zipcar regarding this mess was that the membership fee is non refundable.

As a consistent member of zip car I was…

As a consistent member of zip car I was beginning to get frustrated with how difficult it was becoming to locate a car I’d booked. On two occasions the car was not in the place the app stated it would be which messed up my timing for that day, customer service tried to help but could not locate the car because of a GPS failure! The cars where often in need of repear and at times I felt unsafe. I began to recognise the ones that were half decent.

On this last occasion which was approximately a week ago I hired a car that had about 39% charge. I reckoned that I could stop and charge the car like I would have stopped and put fuel in, but oh no! This became a mission from hell. After two hours of driving and only one errand done the cars charge was very low and the car warned me to go and Charge it. I attempted to charge the car, however every Charging point I went to the cable did not fit and the charge percentage was decreasing fast. So now I am on 12% charge, have not done any shopping and had to get home to give my dad his meds. I called zipcar customer service and was given a link to download an app to find a Charging point which was pointless as the Charging cables have been removed 🙄 however trying to explain this to zipcar customer service is like trying to teach a newborn Russian!!!! I was also charged £29.99 at a charging point when I did finally find one and after waiting 45 minutes for another user to finish, but the kicker her is the machine took my money and did not charge the damn car, so now I am about £100 down and have not done what I set out to do. Customer service might as well have been asleep and if you are thinking about making a complaint don’t bother because they will never find in your favour, instead they will blame you and tell you that if the car is not charged you will be fined, please make that make sense! When I complained I received the dumbest explanation I have ever heard! One part said that zipcar is only to be used for short journeys in your home zone, however during lockdown when zip was not making much money they released a media campaign and used examples of going to a garden centre and doing airport runs, so I suppose we live two minutes drive from the airport? Okay! (said in a super sarcastic tone) so therefore it was my fault that the car was running low on charge. When I enquired about the charging cables I was told that they had all been removed!!’ Now that is clever. So how are these cars supposed to be charged i here you ask? Well according to the smart person who emailed me, their fleet team is supposed to charge them overnight, well duh 🙄
And clearly this has not been the case because most of their cars that day were on less that 25% but somehow it became my fault. Anyways I had to find a car that had more charge to complete my errands. After I made my first complaint and got the stupid response, I responded to them a bit more harsh pointing out the discrepancies in the previous email which would amount to a breach of contract. I requested details of who to contact regarding a DSAR and a copy of their policy. Now wait for it. These stinking low vibrating people at zip car responded with the following:

Hi Tania,

We trust you are well.

Regarding your recent reservation on 03/06/2024, we received excessive speed notifications from our vehicle between 17:34 – 18:29.

At Zipcar safety is our priority. We rely on our members to always abide by all road rules and regulations. We consider the above to be a serious violation and as such must now provide you with a warning. Please note that further such notifications received during your reservations will result in your account being reviewed, and it may be permanently closed as a result.

Now tbh, this is not the first time I had done more than 30 mph in a zipcar however this is the first time that they have said anything about it. Because I made a complaint about there disgusting treatment and stupidity they do this. Well I emailed back and said that I ain’t begging them for their cars and they can go ahead a close my account, in fact I’ll do it myself, damn cheek. They have lost a good customer as I used their cars quite a bit as I am saving to replace my car that was crashed into, so this was only a temporary measure anyways. I must have been easily doing between £200-400 a month using them well they can F off now 😂😂😂

I know zipcar is not doing to well financially so hopefully they will be going into administration soon.

Zipcar is going down…

Zipcar is out of line. They changed the location of my car pick up at the last min the day of the pick not considering my safety or location. There was zero communication zero accountability and zero resolution.

I booked in adavance it's extremely poor customer service and disheartening as a longstanding customer.

I needed the car! I booked 6/1 and to change any details on 6/8 the date of the event is highly unprofessional. They did not consider my safety at all.

I called and it was oh you cancel. You all made changes not me.

This is a very unscrupulous company

This is a very unscrupulous company, and by association its parent company Avis Budget Group also. I had booked a zipcar for a two-day trip a week in advance, and then they suddenly changed my reservation just a few days before the trip to a much smaller car for the same cost, without any explanation given. Then I looked at the car that I had reserved to see what happened, and someone else took part of the time-slot that I had reserved it for. Totally unacceptable.

Useful, expensive and inconvenient

They offer a useful service. However it comes at a high cost, per mile fee is far above the run in h cost and cost of petrol. My 3 day rental came to £360. Kinda high. But then they suspend my account and demand that I provide passport, bank information, utility bills, etc to prove that I’m me. Outrageous amount and detail of information; viewing my bank account is disproportionate. This is all after being a member for 10 years. Calling the help desk is about as helpful as an umbrella in a tornado.

Never using again. Wouldn’t recommend to anyone.

Our zip car completely stopped working and we couldn’t get back in. My purse was still in the car, and they told us our only option was to wait for 1.5 hours until a service person showed up. At which point we would still have to drive the car back to its home location AND be charged for the full amount. We were effectively stranded on the side of the road and were offered little to no solutions that would work.

Zipcar experience…

I have been using zipcar for over 10 years. My only gripe is that they dont offer as many cars like they use to. For example in my area they had a Honda HRV and all of sudden is not available. No explanation given, would be nice to get an alert and have more suvs as well. Other than that great service.
