The risks of investing with councils clearly explained.

The risks of investing with councils were made plain and easily understood so less chance of any ambiguity. Abundance provides a platform for those seeking to invest in sustainable projects for existing and potential investors with no encouragement or pressure to do so leaving it up to each to choose as they wish.
I was pleased to discover there was a council local to us raising funds in a subject which interests me, knowing there are likely to be others available later offering greater returns.

Hi Wendy,

Thank you for taking the time to leave a review. We're sorry to hear you've had a poor experience investing with us.

On Abundance you can choose to invest in two categories of investment - higher risk investments from companies, or lower risk investments from councils. You can read more about Abundance’s role in relation to our company investments here (https://help.abundanceinvestment.com/en/articles/3947968-our-role-over-the-life-of-an-investment) and our role in relation to council investments here (https://www.abundanceinvestment.com/legal/loan-disclosures).

We have always maintained rigorous due diligence procedures to ensure that the investments offered on our platform meet the highest standards of transparency, legality and financial sustainability - that level of due diligence has not changed. Our extensive due diligence is done in advance of a company raising funding through Abundance and typically takes months to complete. However our due diligence process does not mitigate the risks that can affect an investment - so we make sure there are clear risk warnings throughout the process of choosing to invest on Abundance.

There is no doubt that the last few years have been very challenging for many businesses, including those companies that have raised money on Abundance. We have seen those companies that had recently raised funding and were still building when the pandemic struck hit particularly hard. It was not so much the immediate challenges of the first lockdown, but those created by subsequent lockdowns and the aftermath as economies around the world got back to work – leading to severe shortages of some materials and labour, in turn driving higher prices (sometimes 20-30% higher and more). Russia’s war in Ukraine and Brexit added to rising prices (the war particularly impacted energy prices) giving no reprieve to those companies already hit by the constraints the pandemic created. Investors in those companies have unfortunately suffered as a result.

We have worked, and will continue to, to support all of the companies funded on Abundance that have struggled in recent years, but our role is limited. As an investment platform only, our role once an investment has closed is largely an administrative one, and we do not manage the businesses or have a direct oversight role or a role in the recovery efforts where a company has run into difficulties - this is led by the directors of the businesses or an administrator where the company has been placed into administration. The recovery process for your investments is ongoing and we will need to wait for the conclusion of those processes to see what amounts can be returned to investors.

Please get in touch with our support team if you have any questions about your investments.

Kind regards,
The Abundance Team

Can make sense if you're British

I do a lot of crowdinvesting and Abundance has a really good concept. Sadly, my portfolio has performed terribly, compared to other platforms I invested in. A substantial part of my investments is in default and I lost about half of what I put in. That also has to do with insufficient diversification and bad luck on my part, but I don't think Abundance is doing as much as its peers in trying to actively recover assets.
I also lost a substantial part of my investment due to Pound Sterling's depreciation. That's not Abundance's fault, obviously, but is an additional risk factor for foreign investors.

Hi Linus,

Thank you for taking the time to leave a review, and we are sorry to hear you have had a poor experience investing with Abundance.

We have always maintained rigorous due diligence procedures to ensure that the investments offered on our platform meet the highest standards of transparency, legality and financial sustainability. However our due diligence process cannot mitigate the risks that can affect an investment.

When a company that has raised money on Abundance does run in to difficulties, we will always do what we can to support the company to deliver the best possible outcome for our investors, however our role is limited from a legal and regulatory perspective. As an investment platform only, our role once an investment has closed is largely an administrative one, and we do not manage the businesses or have a direct oversight role, and there are only limited circumstances where we could take action on behalf of our investors without their agreement.

Please get in touch with our support team if you have any questions about your investments and their current status.

Kind regards,

The Abundance website had an "update"…

The Abundance website had an "update" some months ago which meant that a lot of useful information is no longer available. I used to be able to see what was On Track / Material Change/ Restructured/ In Default. I've tried, but cannot now find that information summarised anywhere.
When looking for investments, it would be helpful if the term and rates of interest were shown in the thumbnails, rather than having to check each one individually.

Hi Richard,

Thank you for taking the time to leave us feedback.

I'll pass it on to the team here to consider for future platform development.

You can still see the status of a company investment that is in default when viewing the list of the investments you hold, but we don't currently have a place in your account that summarises that information. We have actually very recently added the return and term period to the thumbnails of an investment that is currently open, so hopefully you find that helpful (we don't have it on the marketplace currently as your return will be dependent on the selling price).

Thank you again for providing feedback. If you have any questions, please do get in touch with our support team.
