If I could give zero stars I would!
If I could give zero stars, I absolutely would. The service I received was appalling. I booked a car through Rentalcars.com and received a confirmation for pick-up at Manchester Airport. This was clearly a local hire, as stated on the booking form, and entering a boarding pass number was listed as optional.
When I arrived at the hire desk, the agent—who looked visibly bored and frustrated—took my documents and spent five minutes tapping away at his computer before disappearing into the back office for another five minutes. On his return, he told me I was being refused the car because I didn’t have a boarding pass, claiming it was a condition of hire.
I explained that I didn’t have a boarding pass because I hadn’t travelled by plane—this was a local hire. He then, clearly thinking he was being funny, asked for a ferry or train ticket instead. His tone was rude and obnoxious, and the way he spoke to me was completely unacceptable.
I asked to speak to a manager. With an eye roll, he disappeared again, and after another wait, the manager arrived. Although the manager was far more polite, they simply repeated the same point: I was being refused the car because I didn’t have a boarding pass.
This is an utterly ridiculous rule and an enormous waste of my time. The entire experience was frustrating, and the poor attitude of the agent made it even worse. Very poor service. Avoid if you can.
Alamo at Belfast International AirPort highly recommended.
Alamo - Belfast International Airport
Great service overall and super car, slightly marred by being very understaffed on collection day. Notwithstanding that, it was the usual friendly helpful professional service with a car in great condition. The return was easy and quick and equally friendly. Highly recommended.
AVOID Alamo UK Manchester airport
Alamo had refused to offer me the vehicle. and been told that I am from local without flight information. So can not rent the vehicle to me. Staff name is Simon. I have informed this incident to the branch manager Thomas Carr. He said that Alamo is not update the terms and conditions with carjet yet. I have emailed carjet for refund. always autoreply.
No one is dealing my issue. please have my money back. ALL MY JOURNEY HAD BEEN CANCELLED BECAUSE OF CARJET AND ALAMO'S TERMS AND CONDITIONS.
Refused a car on prepaid booking
We reserved a car in UK at Glasgow Airport via booking.com. It was paid and confirmed.
But when we arrived to the Alamo counter, the representative run some "address check" on my UK driver license, said that it "does not go through", and refused to give me a car. We asked her to check my wife's DL and she said that "it did not go through either". We called for the manager, but he said he cannot do anything. Our DL address is the house we own, where we lived for last 13 years, and we never had any issue with any checks before.
Note also that our DVLA check went through with no problem, and Alamo terms and conditions do not mention ANY additional checks.
We were forced to turn to another company (SIXT) across the hall. It had no issue with our DL addresses, checks etc and gave us a car, but we had to pay twice more.
Excellent Experience at Stansted Airport, UK
I reserved the car on line and collected it from Stansted airport. The check in was smooth and quick and the member of staff extremely polite and helpful. The car was great - exactly what I reserved and new with low mileage. The return was quick and problem free and again the staff member was polite and kind and confirmed my deposit would be returned immediately. I cannot rate the Stansted airport branch of Alamo highly enough. I will use them again without hesitation.
Run away don't give credit card's to…
Run away don't give credit card's to this company and Enterprise !after I paid 2 weeks I first try to take from my card 1800 and i block the transaction, after recive call to increase deposit from200 to 2000 pounds. Or to bring the car back. I said I have paid 2 weeks and I have left 1 week from this.but they said..if I don't pay 2000 more I must bring back instantly the car or report stolen to police!I don't believe I must leave the car in Birmingham and louse 450 pounds and go back to London in train. Horor experience!
My advice to anyone thinking of using…
My advice to anyone thinking of using Alamo. Don’t. They are great when things go as planned but when it goes wrong then they are by far the most apathetic company I have ever encountered. They Issued me with a lower grade of vehicle at JFK Airport, the vehicle I had prepaid for and had been confirmed was not available at JFK but even though I had booked months in advance no one informed me. The vehicle I was given, bearing in mind I had paid for a Premium Crossover was a battered high mileage (very high) standard crossover. They had nothing else and although this was acknowledged as a mistake on their behalf as of yet I have had no refund of the difference. Only an offer of 3 free days rental for a standard car as an apology for the poor service I have received whilst trying to sort what should a simple issue of a refund of the difference. I haven’t asked for anything else than that, and yet 3 months later I have now been told I am not entitled to a refund? So with Alamo if you do not get what you paid for even though it is fully evidenced on your paperwork you will still be told tough luck.
We rented a car in U.S
We rented a car in U.S. whilst in Yellow Stone park it developed a CV joint knock. As we still had week to go, couldn't get any sense from phone numbers. So took the car to Boise in Montana, who staff were helpful gave us temporary car for day then had to go back next to pick up a similar vehicle to what we had rented. Then came the kick in teeth as they charged us fuel at excessive rate for saving them a fortune if car had broken down in middle of no where.
UP DATE.
Alamo have since been back in touch and re-credited fuel, and gave me a discount off rental for inconvenience. Got to admit for a big company was surprised so now give them 5 stars.
Cleaning charges
When I picked up the car I was advised there would be no cleaning charges incurred. On returning the car all was accepted and ok. 1 week later I received an £100 invoice for an automatically charged cleaning cost. Would not use again
Avoid Alamo, Rome
Booked Alamo (through Zest) from Rome Fiumicino airport. It is Alamo in name only - a franchise run by Locauto. Effectively a scam, as the same vehicle can be booked through Locauto for a much cheaper price. I believe this practice also happens at other airports in Italy. Avoid. Will not use Alamo again.
I was wrongly billed for an upgrade
I was wrongly billed for an upgrade. I wrote via the website and got no response. I called and spent time giving all the details - I was told someone would deal with it, but nothing happened.
Zero Stars....collected car from…
Zero Stars....collected car from Manchester Airport, scratches on vehicle before I even got in. Advised to take pictures with time stamp. Returned vehicle 2 days later with a full tank of fuel and in the same condition as when I collected. On returning, vehicle was checked thoroughly and signed off. Staff told me deposit £200 will be returned in 5 days (luckily I videoed this conversation) I implore anyone to record any conservation with this scam company. 6 weeks later - a letter arrived demanding I pay for damaged that occurred whilst it was on hire with me. The Manager, Kirsty raised the claim that I had damaged it. Kirsty plucked my name from thin area and tried her hand to get money from me. Absolute scam. Ironically they have paid me my deposit back however this is now sitting with my solicitor.
*****AVOID AT ALL COSTS*****
Alamo or Locauto..
We picked a car up from Bari train station. The car was dirty and damaged. On driving it is was not in shape, making a terrible tapping noise, despite having supposedly only done 14,000km.
Seems that the office isn't just Alamo either as all our paperwork was from Locauto.
Staff were good though, looked after our cases while we went to have something to eat.
We arrived a little early for our…
We arrived a little early for our rental car at Gatwick airport. The young man ( didn’t get his name) was friendly and efficient. We had a lovely upgraded car and no problems the whole 2week trip.
Alamo care hire scam
On 23rd September I hired a one way car from Newcastle airport to Glasgow airport (£98 plus £200 deposit). On pick up at Newcastle airport I was shown around the car. It was raining heavily and the gentleman walked around the car to check for defects. Due to the heavy rain, he was keen to return to his office. I therefore signed his electronic notebook and started my journey, all of which is motorway driving.
Following return of the car to Glasgow airport the lady informed me of a very small defect on the sidewall of the front nearside tyre. She informed me that she would inform her Alamo office in Newcastle and that my £200 deposit would be returned as soon as possible.
As my deposit wasn't returned by 9th October), I decided to phone Newcastle Alamo office. Unfortunately, my concern was not resolved. I am disgusted to learn that I am being blamed for this tyre defect and that I will be charged for a new tyre. I am also disgusted and amazed that Alamo allowed this car to be driven with this unsafe defect.
Reflecting on many customer reviews, I can see that this is a scam and that Alamo are known to use this as a money making scheme,
I will pursue this matter further through British Vehicle Rental and Leasing Association. I wont be hiring a car from Alamo/Enterprise in the future!
I would encourage you to avoid car hire through Alamo/Enterprise.
Remember the Alamo
After being given a detailed warning in the office about all the damage issues I would be responsible for, we went out to our car with the advice to take pictures of any concerns (in the States, the agent accompanies the client to the car for a dual inspection). We found a couple of large stains on the side of the seats, but chose to drive the car anyway. Half-way out the lot, we realized all the commands were in German, including any instructions on how to change it to English. We brought the car back and a new agent out in the lot declared that this was “below our company’s standards,” then issued us a new, larger car as an upgrade.
Halfway from Edinburgh to St. Andrews, the tire pressure warning light came on, advising me to check the tire pressures, then reset the warning light. With our tight driving schedule, I wasn’t going to return or go out of my way to find a tire company, so we drove on with that warning light on, and the worries that produced (I didn’t tell my wife). We finally found a tire company where they efficiently checked the tire pressure, said all the tires were at different pressures, read the proper amount on the door panel, and properly adjusted all the tires. However, no matter how hard he tried, he couldn’t reset the warning light. He advised us that if we drove 30 mph for 30 minutes, the light should go off. (No charge, but a 20 pound tip for the peace of mind). That didn’t fit into our driving plans, so we drove the rest of the way with the light on, at least knowing the tire pressures were correct.
We arrived in Glasgow, explained the situation to the local agent, who was very supportive and apologetic, explaining the constant issue of tire replacements on rentals. He didn’t charge us for the slight top off of the gas tank, and asked if he could do anything else. The Edinburgh manager was alerted and quickly offered “make up for the issues,” simply to keep a bad review away. Two weeks later and no offer or action. Bottom line—avoid Alamo in Edinburgh.
Stay away from this company
the company is a scam. They are trying to charge us for a tyre that was very old.. it is clear it is old.. it has 82,000 kms and it is the only tyre that has not been changed.. tyre is only 110pounds through google but they charge us 550 pounds
My confidence in Alamo was dented
The initial experience of hiring a car from Alamo at Gatwick Airport was fine.
Pictures were taken of all visible damage and the Alamo representative was informed and the items duly noted.
Despite discovering a defective window operation shortly after collection ( that we had not been made aware of ) the car was acceptable.
Upon return to the same Gatwick location, the car was inspected and the representative confirmed the condition was as collected.
We therefore did not expect, approximately 5 weeks later, to receive notification that damage had occurred to a door, and that a considerable amount of money had been taken from our bank account to cover the cost of the repair. The damage had certainly not occurred during our hire of the car, as inspected and confirmed by their own staff.
This is outrageous and unethical practice will mean, we will never use Alamo or their associates in future.
The car wasnt ready
The car wasnt ready, when it was there, there was major confusion wether we had insurance or not, they told us we didnt, we assured them we did, total confusion, at the last second we noticed fuel tank below a quarter, not pointed out to us, so glad we took a pic of the dash with tank and milage on it, month after the rental i got a bill taken out of my account fo £90, for re fueling, emails and stress later hopefully its sorted, overall v poor service, rented through alamo, but picked up through enterprise, poor allround
Horrible experience
Horrible experience, renting at Valencia train station.
The personal was very rude and answered their privat Whatsapp conversation for minutes before attending us. Then, as we rented a 7 seater, they asked for 2 credit cards in the name of the main driver, which we had never heard of before. They made us go home, fetch another credit card, and back at the rental place they still did not accept it despite being a valid credit card. So we had to cancel the reservation and they did not reimburse us a single cent of the reservation fee as they claim the credit card was not valid. However, we tried to chance the reservation or even make a new reservation in a colleagues's name, but apparently they had no car available (the cancellation of the reservation apparently took time...)
The whole experience was ridicolous.
