I also fell for this Instagram scam: This company purports to be based in New York (with a fake Madison Ave. address) and to be having a "closing" sale. They are basically taking advantage of people who think they might be getting an Akari lamp on sale. Except you're going to get a torn, cheap lamp shipped from China that is identical to ones found on Alibaba.com for $5-$10. If you try to return it, they will offer you a 10-20% "partial refund" (still making them a substantial profit) while asking you to pay a shipping fee of $25-$45 to return it. If you accidentally ordered a lamp from this company, ask your bank to freeze the payment immediately — do not pass go, do not collect $200. Scam!

I was careless. I saw an ad on Instagram, the website looked decent, so I ordered a set of paper lamps. Once the shipping info came out, I noticed it was from China and started to feel uneasy. After half a month, the package arrived—only one lamp instead of two, no brand at all. It didn’t feel right. I emailed them but got no reply. When I asked my credit card company, they told me the payment had already gone through on the day of purchase and couldn’t be stopped. It turned out to be a complete scam. Be careful, everyone.
