Review summary

Created with AI, based on recent reviews

Considering 165 reviews, most reviewers were let down by their experience overall. Customers frequently reported poor service and frustrating customer support, citing unhelpful representatives, language barriers, and incorrect information. Many also faced high and unexpected costs, including significant premium increases and incorrect charges, while struggling with denied care for necessary treatments and difficulty finding in-network providers. However, some customers also noted positive experiences, with a minority finding the customer service helpful and easy to contact, and appreciating good coverage, especially after deductibles, along with features like the rewards program.

Great, unless you actually need to use it

Great, unless you actually need to use it. Ambetter's favorite word is, "denied." Whether your talking about a claim for a routine office visit, a necessary medical test, or any of the other supposedly-covered services, you can be sure that their default response will be DENIED. For instance, when your doctor sends you for an x-ray, his decision is only backed by years of medical school, residency, years more of medical practice, and a thorough examination of you the patient.

But that's no match for the breadth of knowledge at Ambetter. They clearly know better than your doctor even without ever having examined you (or even going to medical school). That's how good they are. But don't worry, if they can't find a reasonable explanation for denial, they will just make something up, as a service to you, the valued customer (e.g. "no supporting documents", even when your physician has submitted a full page of notes on your condition).

So you can be confident that when you pay your expensive premium each month that you're not just paying for lack of service. Your also investing in the future of something much more important: Ambetter c-level bonuses and stock buybacks. As a bonus you get to spend hours having fruitless conversations with non-American phone agents who couldn't care less about your issue. Thanks Ambetter!

Terrible

Terrible. Site doesn’t work. The “24/7 nurse line” number on my insurance card is a lie because I can’t get help according to their recording except during “regular business hours”. That is not 24/7. Good luck finding quality providers who accept this garbage. You might very likely get much sicker waiting to navigate through their labryth of incompetence and customer friction. You will probably give up and hope you get well on your own. That is what I am doing right now after wasting hours to get NOTHING accomplished with them. Terrible .

If I could put a zero

If I could put a zero, I would. This is the worst insurance ever. My wife was told in Sept of 2025 she needed back surgery. We jumped through all the hoops for months and it was initially scheduled for April 29. That was canceled last minute because we were told less than a month out that they wanted her to be nicotine-free for 6 weeks. It was rescheduled for June 2. She quit nicotine use and provided proof of that through the doctors test. Then jumping through more hoops they kept coming up with more excuses not to approve the surgery. We found out around 6pm the day before surgery that it was canceled again and that their 3rd party provider did not think that the surgery was medically necessary.

Ambetter is Interfering with My Husband's Treatments

My husband has alzheimer's disease. He has had three infusions and was doing much better. However when he went for his fourth infusion we were told that Ambetter voided the approval and he needed to have some of the same tests redone. We had them redone. The neurologist and infusion center staff are saying this is ridiculous because they never do these tests this close together. The person from Ambetter, who determined this is a clincal pharmacist, NOT a neurologist. My husband has now missed his scheduled infusion for two weeks and I can see a decline. Ambetter has interupted his treatment. They are causing him to get worse. They do not care about the patients.

I payed my deductible in full then all…

I payed my deductible in full then all of a sudden their was a glitch in the system you can easily look at that month and see everything had gone in 2 times well now they trying to deny the claim even though I have proof from the other company they approved it. So they are making me pay my deductible again. Then at the end of last year they couldn’t get my tax papers because they said I quit using them in December. So I didn’t get to file my taxes until April it finally got resolved but I had to call every two weeks.

A Dangerous Bureaucratic Nightmare That Actively Harms Patients

If you are seeking mental health support, avoid United Healthcare and their partnered platforms like Amwell at all costs. Over the last five months, this corporate machine has turned my search for medical answers into a systemic nightmare, pushing my mental health to an absolute breaking point.
They do not care about patient care; they care about churning numbers. Here is what they consider acceptable medical treatment:
Gross Negligence: A psychiatrist diagnosed me with Bipolar II after a mere 11 minutes of a telehealth session. Rushed, reckless, and entirely inaccurate.
Dangerous Medication Errors: Based on that 11-minute "evaluation," I was put on heavy medications that completely destabilized me and made my condition significantly worse.
Total Abandonment: I had multiple therapists completely no-show to scheduled sessions or show up 30 minutes late with no warning. Another doctor recommended a vital DNA gene test, but when the call disconnected mid-session, they made zero effort to call me back or follow up.
Hostile Administration: When you advocate for your own health or ask to speak to management about getting your own test results, you are treated like a nuisance. I was met with complete hostility and threatened with the cancellation of my upcoming appointments just for demanding basic clarity on my care.
This isn't just poor customer service; it is professional malpractice. When you are struggling with your mental health, you need stability and competent professionals. Instead, this system rewards reckless diagnoses, ghosting patients, and administrative bullying. They make mental health ten times worse. I don’t condone what luigi mangione did but I sure as shit understand it !

Insurance scammers.

Regrettably, this platform obtained my personal information without my consent. I did not register for this insurance, which is neither affiliated with Medicaid nor a legitimate marketplace insurance provider; it appears to be a scam. The platform persistently attempted to solicit payment for medications that are full-price through Express Scripts. I have never been acquainted with this organization. Over the course of a year and a half, I have repeatedly attempted to cancel the service, as it continues to override my Medicaid coverage, causing issues with medication access and copayments. They have indicated that I would incur an out-of-pocket cost of $10,000 before my medications are covered. This situation is concerning.

Ambetter is a predatory leech…

Ambetter is mostly a predatory leech that is only there to gobble up federal subsidies for health plans, and do everything they can to not pay. I'm getting new bills a year later after they refused to cover a hospital stay. If the billing team at your medical office doesn't have the capacity to submit every claim four times, then Ambetter will not pay a penny. It's always wrong code, out of network, or some other phoney technicality.

Auto drafted and termed without notice or explanation

In January, after selecting our plan, Ambetter denied coverage for a necessary medication I have taken for years to manage chronic, debilitating migraines. Instead, they required me to try an alternative medication for two months before reconsidering coverage.

Just before reaching the two-month mark, Ambetter drafted our family premium of approximately $1,700 and then terminated our coverage without notice, citing “voluntary withdrawal.” After contacting them, they were unable to provide any evidence that we had withdrawn coverage and initiated a review process, which they stated could take up to 45 days.

I only became aware of the termination after receiving an autopay cancellation email on April 15, 2026—the day after undergoing a mammogram on April 14. Since then, we have been forced to pay out of pocket for all medical expenses, and as of today, May 3, 2026, we remain without coverage.

During this time, I have also been unable to afford the alternative migraine medication required by Ambetter, as it costs over $1,000 for just 10 tablets.

More importantly, I have three young daughters who require routine medical care. My youngest, who is two years old, has ear tubes and recently experienced bleeding. We have already paid for multiple visits out of pocket, and there are additional medical needs we have delayed addressing due to the financial burden while we wait for resolution.

This situation has created significant financial strain and has directly impacted our ability to access necessary medical care for myself, husband, and my children.

No providers accept this insurance

No providers accept this insurance, apparently there are too many issues with the providers being paid and then out of nowhere they removed medication that I’ve been on for years off of their approved list.

I spent close to six months, trying to find mental health services for my son in Florida or anywhere in the country. All the places I called would not accept Ambetter and then Ambetter never did give me a list of places that would accept.

Absolute garbage insurance you’re better off paying out-of-pocket or Medicaid/Medicare

They like to override your doctor and deny your healthcare

Ambetter of Oklahoma is an excellent insurance company if you like insurance companies that think that they know better than your doctor. They will get in the way of you and your doctor by denying the care, testing, and diagnostics that your doctor says you should get... and they didn't have a problem denying care for me less than 24 hours before it was scheduled (after I've waited weeks).

So definitely go with them if you want a health insurance company looking after themselves and their bottom line instead of making sure that you get the healthcare that your doctor says you should get.

If you go with this insurance company then be sure to be ready to file complaints with the regulatory agencies when you get denied.

Change your name to Am-Worse or Scambetter

Change your name to Am-Worse or Scambetter. It fits the service you have provided to date.

I enrolled in Ambetter as a small business owner in after being forced to switch providers. It has been one of the worst experiences I have ever had with any company.

My minor child suffered a severe injury requiring multiple surgeries. As part of recovery, occupational therapy (OT) was prescribed and previously covered without issue by our prior insurance. Ambetter denied the OT coverage, and despite multiple appeals including a strong written report from the treating surgeon at a major medical center stating that my child may never reach functional range of motion without continued therapy every appeal has been denied. This means their claims department knows more than the surgeon, who has a degree from Stanford.

When we followed Ambetter's own suggestion to obtain a new evaluation, they denied it as a "duplicate request." An expedited appeal was denied on the grounds that it was not life-threatening, despite documented pain during movement.

Beyond the denials, the customer service has been unacceptable. I have made countless calls, been promised supervisor callbacks that never came, and have been given nothing but runarounds with no accountability.

This company is not operating as a legitimate insurance provider. They are denying care recommended by specialists to a child. I would strongly caution any small business owner or family from enrolling with Ambetter.

Ambetter, you are the worst. You should be ashamed of yourself.

No Dentists I Guess

None of the dentists that they say on the website are in network are actually in network. I call them to get help, the lady reads aloud names of dentists from their website for 20 minutes as I patiently tell her that each one is also not in network. So she says she will give me a phone number for the dentist department in my area and then just stopped replying and let the line go quiet. After minutes of me saying "hello?" to an empty line I hung up in frustration.

We had Ambetter for years and loved the customer service and coverage. A mislisting showing our current doctors no longer took Ambetter (when in fact they did) led us to try another Insurance company for the first time in a long time, and it's been a miserable experience. We cannot wait to go back to Ambetter during the next open enrollment.
