Great price, great vehicle, great service

1. The AmiGo representative met us at the Daniel Oduber Quirós International Airport in Liberia, where he helped us withdraw Colones from the ATM before putting our group of 6 into the shuttle to the AmiGo agency.
2. The cost of the van we had reserved for 9 days was thousands of dollars less than a comparable one from Alamo, which is the car rental agency I use in the US (I'm an Alamo "Insider").
3. The AmiGO agent efficiently handled the paperwork and explained the features of our brand new Toyota Hiachi 12-passenger van.
3. The van easily accommodated our party of 6. I especially appreciated the turning radius of the Toyota Hiachi, which is better than our Toyota Prius at home! In addition, the last row of seats was collapsed giving us additional storage space.
4. Upon our return nine days later and the agent's inspection of the vehicle, our $1500 damage deposit "disappeared."
5. A shuttle promptly returned us to the airport.

We rented a car from AmiGO Rent a Car and the key broke due to vehicle wear. The company sent a locksmith, we paid $30 for a temporary fix agreed with their staff, and we were left without a car for an entire afternoon. When returning the vehicle, they charged us an additional $100 for a new key without our consent, despite having full insurance. They also held our deposit for 10 days and took weeks to respond. Abusive and unprofessional experience: they don’t take responsibility for their vehicles’ failures and pass the costs to the customer. I do not recommend this company.

Never again

We rented a car for three weeks. Upon delivery, the wifi module was not charged. According to the salesperson it would charge on the usb connector in he car but that was not the case. When leaving our lodge on the road the second lodge, again it was not working. Send them a whatsapp message, stil today it is not read and we are 2 weeks home. Called the helpdesk to report it. Very unpolite person on the line.Their solution was to drive back to san José to pick up another one. Seriously???.
For us not anymore

I strongly advise against renting from AmiGO

I strongly advise against renting from AmiGO Rent A Car. Our experience was frustrating, dishonest, and handled with terrible customer service.

We reserved and paid for a 4x4 vehicle (Mitsubishi ASX or similar) well in advance, as we needed it to reach specific destinations. However, when we arrived, we were given a lower-category car with no 4x4 and low ground clearance, making it impossible to access our planned destinations. The staff assured us several times via WhatsApp and email that the correct vehicle would be provided within 2-3 days, but this never happened.

Instead, we were stuck with the downgraded car for our entire trip, and when they finally offered a partially similar vehicle, it was after the dates we actually needed the 4x4 and not the automatic we reserved, making the offer meaningless. Throughout the trip and again when we returned the car, Amigo repeatedly reassured us that we would be fully reimbursed for the downgrade for the entire duration we had the wrong vehicle. However, when it came time to honor their word, they only refunded a small partial amount of less than 2$ a day—an amount that is completely unacceptable given the downgrade and amount of emotional stress. Worse yet, they acted before we could even file a claim with the company we booked through, dismissing our complaint by saying the matter was “already handled”. This comes after they told us they could not handle our claim and that we needed to go through Auto Europe.

To summarize:
• They never sent the promised customer satisfaction form at the end of the rental, likely to avoid recording our dissatisfaction.
• Our car was poorly maintained—the battery connection was so loose it disconnected after only three drives.
• Their service is deceptive—from bait-and-switch style tactics to false reassurances about reimbursement and delivering the proper car to “finalizing” claims before they can even be submitted.

This company is completely untrustworthy in our experience. If you book with them, be prepared for broken promises, poor maintenance, and zero accountability. I highly recommend choosing another rental company to avoid the stress, financial, and emotional loss we experienced.

Never Amigocar again, very disappointed…

I booked a rental car in February 2025 from Amigo Car Costa Rica for 3 weeks/2300 USD and was unhappy with  the experience.Their staff were quite pleasant but I would never do business with them again. The price communicated by Amigo before was not transparent and represented Netto prices and we payed in addition +13% Tax.

The car (Toyota RAV 4) was unsatisfactory with multiple nicks and dents and a too small engine that was unable to climb up hills without slowing down and comes without trunk cover. The automatic transmission was the worst I drove for 20 years.

But the best came at the end of our tour through Costa Rica. The car was not well prepared as we picked the car - one floor mat was missing in the right back and we didn’t checked this. So we had to pay a full floor mat set for 58 USD (after dealing), according of Amigo Car it can not be bought separately. No goodwill was accepted.
After i decided to remove all floor mats, they told me that one mat costs 68 USD … !!! Full set cost than is the 4x price !
The floor mat was missing from beginning but was not mentioned in protocol when we received the car
I‘d never looked in the back before for floor mats of rental cars. It seems to me to be a very succesfull model to grab money.

If you can please avoid to rent a car by Amigo. They practice no fair business.
I‘ll do that definitely - no rental #amigocar again.

Javier and Eddie went above and beyond to assist us. We have never received such great service from a rental company. We will definitely use their services again and highly recommend them to our family and friends.

Roundtrip in Costa Rica

The handover of the hire car went smoothly. The car was in very good condition and sufficiently dimensioned for our tour. It had a full tank of petrol and was clean. All small scratches on the car were noted and not criticised when we returned it to another location. The return was very quick. After the handover we were driven to the airport free of charge without a long wait. The car had no technical problems during the entire period of use. We didn't have any accidents, so we didn't have to contact the hire agency during our round trip. Based on my experience, I can highly recommend AmigoCar.

Worst expirience i ever had renting a car.

Upon arrival AmiGO demanded that we payed 100 dollars extra, because we did not have “The right type” of credit card. They said every rental company in the country demanded this. I went next door at Hertz and afsked if i could rent a car using the type of credit card i have. There was no problem here.

In order to use the credit card i have at AmiGO i had to pay double of The original Price.

I then wanted to cancel my booking because everything seemed a bit shady, this could not be done. So basicly AmiGO forced me to pay double Price or lose The original payment i already were charged.

Very shady nonprofessional and undiplomatic. I offered to pay the deposit up front or in cash. Nope had to pay double!

Dont rent a car here!

To absolutely avoid

This company forced me to take out insurance under the pretext of an invalid bank card on their machine even though I have been using this same card for many years when I rent cars all over the world.

Intimidation for extra charges

On arrival the Representative was trying to suggest our insurance wouldn’t cover our trip and offered insurance that was more expensive than the initial rental &made my daughter worried. Our insurance was premium & full. On return they tried to charge for cleaning costs that were never mentioned in the contract so we contested this & refused to pay extra…. I will not use them again

Only partial third party insurance

The pick up process and drop-off processes were reasonably efficient (there was someone at SJO with a sign). I rented a 4x4 and I got a basic Toyota 4x4 Rav4 with some mileage (>100,000 Km), but the car was OK, clean and in overall good condition. It lacked some basic features (rear sensors, on board computer, CarPlay…) but possibly this is a limitation of the available models in Costa Rica.

I rented the car through a third party company with a Voucher that stated the car had third party insurance and CDW with an excess of about 1200 USD. Since I have my own insurance for the excess and a separate travel insurance, this is the standard insurance variant that I get all over the world when renting a car. However, upon arriving at Amigo offices, I was told by the staff that my voucher was correct, but that their standard third party insurance only covered only 80% of the third party damages, being 20% of the damage fully charged to me (plus a penalty of 300 USD), unless I got the full insurance. Therefore, if I would have a major mishappening and 100,000 USD of third party damages, I would be accountable for 20,000 USD. After renting cars in dozens of countries aI never saw such innovative interpretation of “third party insurance”. BTW, these T&C were not clear in the voucher I had.

Given these conditions, I got the full insurance, of course, doubling my personal insurance. Complained to Amigo upon return, but never got a reply.

Horrible pick-up process experience with Amigo Rent a Car

We arrived at San Jose Airport and a representative from Amigo Rent a Car was waiting for us. He was very nice and brought us to the Amigo Rent a Car offices very quickly. The office was just a few km from the airport.

There, a girl received us very kindly to carry out the process of collecting the vehicle. But she was nice only at the beginning. She welcomed us, but during the first explanations she was always saying “tenemos que hablar de cositas” (We have to talk about little things). Later on, we realized what she really meant about that.

We booked a SUV car several months ago because we wanted some extra space during our trip through Costa Rica. Also, in Costa Rica there are many potholes in the roads, and we wanted a high ground clearance car.

The girl, I think her name was Leslie, asked us where we wanted to go in Costa Rica. We explained to her, and then she told us that we didn’t need a SUV car for that itinerary, and she could offer us just a compact car. We totally declined because we expressly pay more to have a SUV. Compact cars were much cheaper when we booked the car, but we didn’t take any because we wanted a high clearance car like a SUV.

She told us she didn’t have any, and we had to pick up the compact one.

So, even we were very tired because of the long flights, we began to complain.

Clearly, we booked the car many several months ago, if they didn’t have one, they should have warned us in advance, not during the pick-up process!!!

We made the reservation through DiscoverCars, so we called them to manage the issue.

We told the girl that this was their responsibility and that they should provide us the car we booked or similar. The situation was very unprofessional. We told them that they should find a solution.

The worst part is that, after a long time arguing, it ended up that they indeed had a SUV car, but they didn’t want to give it to us!!! Incredible! Very Very unprofessional.

After our trip to Costa Rica, I can assure you that a high clearance car is an advantage because there are a lot of unpaved roads and many many potholes.

After solving this issue, she began with the second little “cosita”. She told us that we had to take out their additional Full CDW insurance. I have to mention that we already had the basic CDW (with a $1,000 deductible) and SLI with Amigo Rent a Car , and an additional full insurance with another company that covered many other things, among them the deductible I mentioned before.

She told us that that full insurance was not valid, and we had to take out theirs. To put you in situation, their additional full insurance that they wanted to sell us was more expensive than the total cost of the entire car rental. A real madness!!

After arguing again about this new issue. We finally manage to continue with the pick-up process. The girl was not kind anymore, but edge and unpleasant.

Moreover, during the payment process, we had a problem with our credit card. In those moments, instead of helping, flatten and facilitating the situation, they were just whispering among themselves and laughing. It seemed like they were laughing at us!!! Incredible situation and very unprofessional.

So, we ended up with a SUV car, as we have booked, but not before 3 long hours at their office, full of nerves and unpleasant moments. Totally unacceptable!! Totally horrible experience!! What a way to try to ruin our holidays. I personally felt physically ill the next two days due to the anxiety suffered.

The day of the drop-off, and the days before, we were also very nervous because of what had happened during the pick-up process. However, the drop-off process was smooth and quickly.
Thanks God!

By the way, the car was a little bit old, with more than 100.000 km on its meter, but worked just fine during the whole trip.

So, if you have booked or are going to book a car with Amigo Rent a Car, stay alert, full of energy and plenty of time. Although I recommend you looking somewhere else.

The worst experience of car rental I’ve…

The worst experience of car rental I’ve ever had.
Hired a car for 7 days in Costa Rica from SJO, had an issue with accommodation for the first night so decided to change the booking (2 months in advance) for which the price increased by $180usd.
Arranged to collect the car, which wasn’t ready so had to return 2 hours later when it would be ready. Upon collecting the car I was saddened to see such a poor car, it was so bad I refused to take it. The second (and final) wasn’t much better, but was the only vehicle they said was available, this was a very basic model. No usb, no aux, no power steering, I felt like I’d gone back 20 years. The car was ok, nothing special, but functional.
Having arranged a 05:30 drop off on booking, when collecting the vehicle I was informed the office first open until 07:00, which wasn’t suitable as I had a flight to catch, so agreed and arranged to drop off the night before. Imagine my horror when I found out they wanted to charge me for an early drop off - some sort of penalty they impose.

There are better service providers out there.
