Trying to charge for pre exisiting damage
WARNING: Understand Bargain’s 1-hour damage reporting rule
I’m writing this review because I genuinely don’t want another customer to find themselves in the position I am now in.
I collected vehicle M17WD from Bargain Car Rentals in Hobart at approximately 7pm, 24 July 2026 in poor/dim lighting. There was no joint inspection with a staff member.
Importantly, Bargain’s condition report recorded the vehicle as having no existing damage. That was incorrect.
Fortunately, I took my own video before leaving.
When I returned the vehicle, Bargain identified a dent at the front bumper and a scrape underneath the front bumper. I immediately disputed causing the damage as there had been no accident, impact or incident during my rental.
When I showed the staff member my collection video, it demonstrated that the visible front dent was already there and it was acknowledged as pre-existing.
The second area, the scrape, started from underneath the front bumper from where it was not visible standing in front of the vehicle. It wasn’t visible during a normal walk-around and wasn’t captured in my video.
This is where customers need to be extremely careful.
Bargain has a 1-hour damage reporting requirement in its rental terms and has relied heavily on the fact that I did not report this underside damage within that period while pursuing me for more than $2,000.
But how can a customer report damage within an hour when it is located underneath the vehicle and they have no reasonable opportunity to even see it?
That question becomes even more concerning when Bargain’s own condition report had already failed to record the visible pre-existing dent.
Bargain subsequently obtained clear photographs of the underside damage after my rental. I have repeatedly asked them to provide the corresponding pre-rental photographic evidence showing that exact underside area was undamaged immediately before I collected the vehicle.
At the time of writing, that evidence has not been provided to me.
I dispute liability and am now escalating the matter externally.
My advice to anyone hiring from Bargain: do not assume a normal walk-around or the supplied condition report is enough. Read the terms carefully and be particularly aware of the 1 hour reporting requirement. Take your own timestamped photos and video before driving away, including underneath the front and rear of the vehicle where it is safe to do so, and have every mark acknowledged in writing.
My collection video protected me regarding the visible pre-existing dent that Bargain’s own report had missed. It could not protect me from a dispute over damage underneath the vehicle that I had no reason to know existed.
If you are given vehicle M17WD, specifically check the front and underneath it and make sure any existing damage is correctly recorded before leaving.
I will update this review if Bargain provides the requested pre-rental evidence or when the dispute is resolved.
Protect yourself. Photograph everything before you drive away.
We had a great experience
We had a great experience! They waited late for us after our flight was delayed and gave us great advice for what to do while visiting. Dropping the car off was just as smooth. Thank you!
Good service
Good service, good car, cheap price, can't complain. My only recommendation would be clearer signs for where to take the rental car back to at Hobart airport, for this particular company. It was easy to go way off track to the other drop off site.
Rude persoal
The guy at the terminal was rude because we booked through booking .com didnt get the car we requested was told they didnt have any 4x4 .ended up with a t60 ldv wich was very difficult to get in and out of .
Customer service is always good
Customer service is always good. Unfortunately the vehicles are pretty below average. The small GM SUV I just hired for almost two weeks was the worst I’ve had. It had lots of creaking and rattling noises. Experienced hard starting at least 50% of the time. It was extremely gutless! The windscreen wipers were awful. The inside of the vehicle was also dirty. Disappointed.
Thankful and blessed
On behalf of my family, thank you so much for making our Tasmania tour meaningful and a lot of memories to cherish with by visiting tourist spot destinations made possibly by renting one of your car. It’s affordable and staff are easy to deal with . You complete our Tasmania Journey incredible❤️! Godbless
Bargain Car Rentals.
Bargain Car Rentals Office was conveniently located at Hobart Airport & the vehicle was nicely presented at the time of collection. Thank you.
However, we were subjected to a confusing situation before vehicle pick-up. My husband & I were sold an additional Insurance Policy by the Office Receptionist after being told that the Insurance we previously purchased OnLine, through Airport Rentals, would be hugely problematic should a claim be made, as it was US-Based & not directly connected to Bargain Car Rentals. We were also told that Airport Rentals would fully reimburse the Insurance Policy costs upon our communication with them, at our convenience, as the Company is familiar with this predicament & would comply appropriately. ... not so!
Airport Rental Insurance reimbursement may be considered, not assured, only if communique was made / arose before collection of the vehicle at Bargain Car Rentals site, which I was informed later that afternoon following a call to Airport Rentals Customer Centre re the matter. The Car Insurance a/c was then just over $1,000 AUD for two (2) weeks --- excessive.
Calling Bargain Car Rentals with this concern unfolding, a staff person (Vin) was very sympathetic to our issue and immediately addressed the issue with reimbursement of the Bargain Car Rentals Insurance + took the standard $500 Security Fee allowing our Airport Rentals Insurance Policy to be maintained as proposed. ... the Security Fee refund is still in abeyance, despite being assured at the Hobart Office that monies would be returned automatically to my a/c in 3-5 days upon an incident free return of the vehicle.....which it was.
The matter was certainly attended to promptly, but a disturbing commencement / conclusion to our Tasmanian trip & vehicle hire for the sake of a sale.
Easy checkin
