Worst Upper Midwest: An Utter Embarrassment Masquerading as a Hotel

I don’t usually leave reviews, but my stay at the Best Western Riverfront in Marinette, Wisconsin (USA) deserves a warning label. From the moment I walked in, it was clear this place had no interest in basic hospitality. The front desk attendant didn’t even bother to stand up or greet me — just a dismissive glance and a rude attitude to set the tone.

The problems only got worse once I got to the room. No room service. The on‑site restaurant? Closed. No phone. No working TV — just a remote with nothing to control. No bath. No heat or AC. The fridge was turned off. It felt like a room that hadn’t been checked, cleaned, or cared for in ages. Stuffy, cheap, and absolutely not what was advertised.

And don’t let the façade fool you. Think of the worst hotel room you’ve ever stayed in, then drop it one more notch. That’s what you’re walking into here.

To make matters worse, I was quoted one price before my stay and then charged $600 for four days, far above what I was told. They lied about the price, the amenities, and the discounts. Nothing matched what was promised.

This place is a complete disappointment from top to bottom. Save your money and your sanity — stay literally anywhere else.

Poor service

Hotel at Heathrow airport. On check-in no room cards working so had to be let in my room by stall. Hotel WiFi has no internet access so had to use mobile data. Restaurant offers only Indian food or pizza/burger style food. Poor

Best western hotel Brome Grange
I stayed for one night, lovely friendly helpful staff. Right from check-in, bar staff and restaurant staff, polite,friendly and helpful. You make this hotel brilliant, I had a wonderful stay.

stayed in the best western in knowsley, liverpool
really poor , we paid extra to have suit with a jacuzzi bath. only problem was there was not hot water and the tap on the bath was broken. complained and sent an email in to the company , that was 2 weeks ago and they still have not replied.
will not use best wetern ever again.

We would recommend this hotel.

We have stayed here quite a few times. Yes, its a bit tired but functional for us. The room is very adequate and clean. All staff were very pleasant. Breakfast is very good. Evening meals were excellent. Only problem we had was the WiFi, hardly worked. It's very annoying. Please management, can you sort it.
We would recommend this hotel.

THEY DO NOT CLEAN YOUR ROOM!
I stayed at the Best Western Pawleys Island with a reservation for 4 people and 2 nights. They gave us 2 towels and when I asked for more, they said they do not have bath towels and I was allowed only 2 half size pool towels, which were very scratchy.
Next day they did not clean our room, clean the bathroom, make the beds, clean the coffee pot ect. They provided us with 2 towels once again. I inquired at the front desk, was told they had no towels and I needed to speak with the housekeeping manager - who was not there. I was also informed that IT IS THEIR POLICY NOT TO CLEAN ROOMS! Housekeeping staff was seen sitting on beds in other rooms watching TVs.
I left a message to speak with the hotel manager. I called the 1-800 customer service number 2 times and they left messages for the hotel manager to call me. After 2 weeks, they have not had the courtesy to respond.
I HIGHLY RECOMMEND YOU DO NOT STAY HERE!!

My money stolen by the Carlton Hotel in Bournemouth

My awful stay in the Carlton Hotel in Bournemouth was ruined by the hotel themselves when the receptionist charged me the wrong amount of money for the 2 nights but after checking a payment I was shocked to see another charge of £119.02GBP Taken with no authorization and no apology when I bought it up and everyday since I have had to send countless emails and nothing is sorted! Might as well have not bothered going would have been less stress.

Finally got a refund. Jesus almost passed out. I will remove this review from trust pilot in the same amount of time it took me to get my money back.

Absolutely awful stay

Absolutely awful stay! Executive room ( their top one) and was a shoe box, with no fridge and no air con, with stained walls and a broken shower! Sent one small fan to the room that was as hot as the Egyptian dessert, and couldn't have cared less when we complained mid-stay or on check out! Manager messaged to say they'll do better in the future! Ha.... I would heavily avoid this chain, especially Chilworth Manor Spa in Southampton, as once they've taken your money, almost £200 for the night with no breakfast even, they don't care, and have no intentions of making your stay comfortable. But if you want a room you expect to be gorgeous, and a spa that is pitiful, and a shower that falls off in your hand, with leaking water stains on the wall, then this is your place! We won't be back! Worst stay made so by the distinct lack of customer service!

Stayed at the Best Western in…

Stayed at the Best Western in Mexborough called the Pastures hotel when we arrived the twin we asked for wasfar too small as my wife is disabled so we complained the manager Michelle Hall asked us to stay in the room for the first night and she would move us to another room the next day. I can’t praise Michelle and her team too highly for the way they have looked after us throughout our stay after moving us to a more suitable room and ensuring we were comfortable during the length of our stay. Well done Michelle

Best western overall is subpar

Best western overall is subpar. It is run and operated by uncaring employees. Very shaddy operation i am diamond and it means nothing to this company. First experience there were roaches in the bathroom. Next experience the elevators didn't work. Final straw i booked a property for one night in Westfield nj. I wanted some info. The phone at the property wasn't working for 2 days. I couldn't reach anyone. I called cs they couldn't reach anyone there either. I was trying for 3 hours. I finally told cs to cancel my res. I paid with points. They now say it's past cancelation time by 45 minutes. Mind you i have been trying for 3 hrs. Scam? 28000 points lost because their phone disconnected people. ? I think not

Ignorant and uncaring.

On 22/12/24 I was due to fly to Canada from Heathrow so I booked a room at the Best Western Heathrow Ariel hotel for 21/12/24. My mother was admitted to end of life care and on 05/12/24 I decided to cancell my trip to Canada. That same day, out of courtesy, I contacted both Booking.com and the hotel by phone to infom them of my situation and tell them they could make the room available to other customers. I asked the hotel if, in this exceptional circumstance, I could be issued a credit for the hotel to use when I rebooked my Canada trip. The hotel told me thet Booking.com had to request this which they kindly did. I received an e-mail confirming that the request had been made but that the hotel had not responded. On 22/12/24 I received an e-mail stating that the Ariel hotel had informed Booking.com that I had not arrived and to explain why. I found this surprising as I had spoken to the hotel reception on 05/12/24. I found it disgraceful that the hotel had ignored both my and Bookin.com's request and that their overiding attitude was one of disinterest given such distressing circumstances. In truth I found their attitude uncaring and rather distasteful. I had done all I could to give them the opportunity to make the room available ( 16 days in fact ) but they simply didn't care. I shall never book a Best Western hotel again and shall ensure any future holiday I book, does not use Best Western .

Disgusting, Atrocious, worst Xmas Day meal EVER

Aberafan Beach Hotel, Port Talbot
We booked our Christmas Day lunch at this hotel. NEVER AGAIN !! When we arrived we were told to go into the dining room and look for our name to find our table. We had to pass the breakfast buffet table with items still on it which had not been cleared away. When we found our table, no one came to take our drinks order and when I asked I was told to go to the bar, which was in another room, and get them ourselves. The bar was unmanned.

The meal when it came was absolutely DISGUSTING and only fit for the bin! The broccoli was yellow, the sprouts brown and the rest of the veg was dried up and discoloured. It was too horrid to attempt to eat. The chef, if there was one, should be ashamed and should be sacked.

When I asked for a refund I was given it immediately without question. Obviously it was expected and most likely was not the first such request. When we were leaving a table of pensioners asked why we we were leaving and said it was the worst food they had ever had too. Their plates were full of uneaten inedible food.

Fail to refund and ignore you

I Pre paid through booking.com for BWH at Montgomery, Carmichael Road, Alabama 36106.
On arrival 17 June 2023 I was informed that the pool was closed. I asked if I could have a full refund and leave. The staff agreed and said booking.com would be refunded.
Booking.com did not receive the refund and the hotel has ignored their enquiries.
I have contacted the hotel and been ignored. I wrote a complaint to BWH head office and they did response - This needs to be sorted through the hotel!!!!!

Accommodation for wake

I was recently at a wake reception at Best Western Hotel Knights Hill King's Lynn.
The reception was for 50 and the accommodation provided was in my view totally inadequate with people almost sitting on one another.Not what you want for such a solum occasion.

Do Not Book with These Guys

I booked with them in 2011 as my sister was coming in town in Vienna for a visit. She cancelled and so I cancelled the reservation with the hotel more than a month in advance. Nevertheless, the hotel charged me for the entire planned duration, claiming I never cancelled. The manager responded in a rude manner that he would have returned the money but because of my attitude as he claimed he wont. The hotel gave me a $50 gift card in compensation. Pathetic company. For reference, the person who failed to cancel my reservation is Lina Michel, the file name opened after my inquiry into their theft of my money without even a signatur is 110809-2465 , and the name of the so called customer service person Elisabeth Cole Espinoza.
