Racist, Politically Correct Only Book Club

BookBub administers a FB group called Historical Fiction Book Lovers. They consistently promote RACIST behavior and commentary of members, allowing politicized posts from an Israeli perspective while criticizing, suppressing, censoring and ultimately removing simple requests for book recommendations from Arab or Muslim perspectives. This should be renamed Politically & Racially Correct Historical Fiction Book lovers.

Doesn't Work Internationally

New User, but it seems you have to be American! I only have Amazon Kindle (not any of the other delivery options quoted by BookBub). So I looked at all the free/low price BB reading options and try to buy but it takes me to my own Amazon account, which is in Australia, and they may have the book, but at the non-discounted expensive standard price for Kindle, either that, or "this book is not available for your region". Same with Singapore and Malaysia - I live in both countries and the BB won't deliver to Kindle in either place (I've tried changing my country to both of those).... seems if you only have Amazon as an option, it needs to be in the US. Useless for international readers.

Cant Compete With Amazon

I haven't dealt with Bookbub but I have to wonder with a giant like Amazon who is a monopoly how one can hope to get the books of their choice when you can't even get the books of your choice on Google Play Books or Kobo because of the stranglehold that Amazon has.

Unsubscribe? Not allowed!

I have been subscribed to bookbub for some time. I think I even bought a book! But I realised I had stopped reading their eMails and decided to unsubscribe. I common with so many apparently tech-savvy eBusinesses there is always some kind of error when it comes to unsibscribing. bookbub's "unsubscribe" option crashed my browser altogether. Not cool

Spam Generation

I can sign up and leave reviews on trustpilot, and have not received one unoptional spam email. Interesting, but makes sense, as trustpilot's business model is all about leaving reviews. Bookbub's business model seems to be spam and wasting people's time and as such I give it one star.

His Gift, a first read of Clare London's work

His Gift by Clare London is a short novella. Steven awakens and finds himself seriously injured. He has very little memory of how he came to be injured and struggles to find help. He finds a house and asks for help. He is greeted by a voice, and then passes out. Upon awakening he meets Eliot, who claims that Steven is his gift.
The story revolves around the instant attraction they feel for each other and the growing love between them.
The setting is otherworldly in details. No specific location is given. No specific time or timeline is given. It is as if the time and location is floating and/or somewhat unreal.
Eliot is hesitant to give details to Steven who continually asks for, yet does not receive answers as to where he is, how he arrived and whether he can return. Eliot eventually tells Steven that he may leave but Eliot will bring him back.
Steven does leave, does discover what occurred and finds acceptance in the situation. He returns to Eliot willingly. This reader will not divulge plot details which will take away from the reader's pleasure and which will ultimately spoil the McGuffin (in this reader's opinion) of the story.
The characters are beautifully described. The surroundings also beautifully drawn. And the author definitely knows how to draw the reader into fantastically satisfying sex scenes between the two main characters.
This is the first reading of this author's works and this reader will look for more of her works.
This review is in exchange for an ARC for the title, but the writer's opinion herewith is in no way colored by the gift of the ARC. The pleasure in reading the story is genuine.

"Maximum Pressure" by Sheila Lowe

In "Maximum Pressure", the reader gets not one but two homicides (plus an attempted one) under the same cover.
Maximum Pressure is fast-paced with excellent development of the characters involved. The questions raised in the reader's mind are not just "who did it?", but when?, how? and why?" The plot is complex enough to maintain continued interest, right up to a clever ending in the final chapters. A great read. Lotsa fun!

More for free books and deeply discounted (.99 or free books)

Their whole marketing concept is geared towards free books. If you're looking to build followers and such, okay. Unfortunately, the followers there still demand free books instead of actually being willing to purchase a book. You can 'sell' a few books there, but not enough to make it worth the spend. You'd be better off learning to use Facebook, Instagram, Google Ads, or TikTok. Hugely cheaper cost, and sales that actually make a royalty.

In Bookbub's defence, this model sums up about 90% of the 'book promotion" services out there. You pay them to help you give away free books... Amazon/KDP Select is probably a better place to use if you want to get more reader pickups of free books, and it's free.

Fiddly and Hard to Leave

I wanted to create an account but the site refused to accept my card. I was sent an incredibly fiddly work-around which was more hassle than it was worth. Eventually created an account with Pay Pal. But the ad campaign on the connected Authors Website for my own books failed to deliver any sales. Deleting my account has also been (deliberately?) difficult and I'm sure that doesn't comply with UK consumer law.

Currying Death by P.D. Workman

Currying Death by P.D. Workman is the 11th book in the Kenzie Kirsch Medical Thriller series, which can also be read as a standalone. Kenzie Kirsch, an assistant medical examiner, investigates the death of a young man in his home, accompanied by his girlfriend and roommate. Despite his recent illness, the cause of death remains unclear. The story explores the mystery behind his death and raises questions about future victims. The author's realistic writing style, including detailed medical terminology and descriptive language, makes the book engaging and enjoyable. I started reading this story and the pages just flew! Check out the series if you like clean writing without gore or steamy scenes. Make sure to check out her other series while you're at it!

CHINA; SWEET & SOUR

I found it interesting to read about these teachers who were teaching English to teacher/students in China and how they became friends.
CHINA; SWEET AND SOUR by Virginia Helsinga When Virginia initially signed up to go to China with Amity, a Chinese non-governmental organization (NGO) for their Summer English Program (SEP),teaching English to Chinese teachers and students, she was just looking for a challenge and a change.  She never expected to fall in love with the Chinese/Mongolian people like she did after working and socializing with them for one summer. I enjoyed reading this book and look forward to reading the next two books in the series.  The author includes an early chapter identifying the characters in her book, who are Americans, and who are Chinese.  At the end of the book, she includes a glossary of simple Chinese expressions, giving the Chinese words, symbols, pronunciations and definitions. This was very helpful. Virginia must have kept detailed day to day notes of her experiences because she has a fantastic recall of events. When the Americans joined Amity and came to China, they were warned not to express any Christian ideas and beliefs inside or outside of their classrooms, yet Virginia said her Christian faith grew stronger while working and socializing with her Chinese teacher students. Surprisingly, every Sunday, her team, with their Chinese interpreters, were allowed to attend the registered Christian church in their area.  Highly recommend.

Outstanding Service

As an author, I’ve used both BookBub’s Featured Deals and their platform ads — and I can confidently say they are outstanding.

They consistently deliver the results they promise, with excellent transparency and clear, responsive communication throughout. Their platform is intuitive and author-friendly, making it easy to build ads, track performance, and adjust campaigns based on real data.

Yes, their Featured Deals are one of the pricier options in the book promotion world — but there's a reason for that: they work. BookBub reaches millions of engaged readers, and their newsletters and email campaigns are beautifully designed and highly effective.

I wholeheartedly recommend BookBub to every author I know. They are, without a doubt, the most powerful promotional tool in my author toolkit.
