Avoid this book store like the plague!

Made a purchase on 4/12/25 with the intention of getting the book by Christmas and it’s now 4/1/26 & I still haven’t received the book. Customer service doesn’t respond. Shop with Booktopia at your own risk! There are better more reputable online book stores out there!

Possible drop shipping.

I ordered some books as a Christmas present in early December.
Online they claimed it was in stock & would arrive well before Christmas.
After the delivery date came & went I contacted customer support who told me they were waiting for it to be shipped to their warehouse & would be another 2-3 weeks for them to even ship it to me.

I wouldn't have purchased if they had not claimed it was in stock. By the time I was advised it would not be here for Christmas I didn't have time to organise something else.

Terrible customer service ignored my…

Terrible customer service ignored my request to refund my order after 18 days and 2 requests to cancel on day 10 and day 16 when it became apparent from their website they were out of stock, after misleading me that it would be delivered in a week when ordered. I was only in Australia temporarily and have asked them again today to stop the order and refund, otherwise the more likely a waste of A$50 for me. Annoyed.

Update: Booktopia have contacted me and processed a refund, so changing improving my star rating although disappointed i'm pleased they followed up.

not so great xmas 2025

Hi, bought 3 books for my father who's in a nursing home not doing so great, but that is besides the point, purchased 1st of dec 2025, invoice said 10 to 15 days had work for 14 days then drove 2 days to see my father and brother on 20th dec 2025 arrived, no books notified booktopia reply on 22nd dec 2025 that books would turn up on 24th dec 2025 had 2 day drive back to work 23rd dec now my fathers xmas present will now wait 14 days for me to drive back down and give him his late xmas present thanks for ruining xmas.

crap customer service, and undescriptive listings

Their descriptions are very poor. their cropped photos of book covers and poor descriptions with duplicate listings varying only slightly in price makes it hard to discern if you are buying the correct book, and their returns policy is crap, I was met with passive aggressive attitude when the book my husband tried to get me for christmas arrived and it was not the edition he thought he was buying, it is a smaller version with no sprayed edge that doesn't match the rest of my set, after giving attitude about returns for errors when ordering etc, were offered a store credit if we pay shipping to return it. Bugger that, better of just reselling it or gifting it on, I won't be shopping here again personally, their loss as I like to spend money on special editions and hardcovers. hope this company has the 2026 it deserves.

Still no response or books !!!

Ordered 2 books 07/12/2025 for Christmas presents. They were in stock.

Hadn't received by 18/12/2025 so sent an email, received an auto response.

Still no books... 22/12/2025 sent another email to follow up as still didn't get a reply from the previous email .

Order was fir $94.00 and nothing from Booktopia.. I will send a refund request to PayPal.

If they didn't have the books available say so and I could have bought them from another book shop. !!!
Disappointing

Ordered book as Christmas present

Ordered book as Christmas present. Wrote two emails asking for an update as it was getting close to Christmas - didn’t get a reply.
Then two days from Christmas they said they couldn’t fill the order. If they had of responded to my first email I would have cancelled the order and gone somewhere else.
Won’t buy from booktopia again. Really poor service

Scammers

Scammers! Fake reviews by Chinese and Indian review bots that Booktopia pay to leave good reviews! This company has zero integrity. They'll even go as far as falsifying postal tracking information and then delegate your email address to there spam folder when you ask about purchases not received.

First tried logging in, then order in limbo

First tried logging in, forgot password. They sent me a new one and I got in but could not do anything until I changed it. After doing that it wanted it again, over and over. Email with temp password said if I had a problem to log in to talk to them. How? The problem is I can't log in. Tried their chat and it said it didn't work. Gave up.
Went in as a guest and ordered and paid for a book, including absorbant postage. Status for a week and a half still says processing and they are printing me a copy just for me. Have tried contacting them three times to find out time frame and what it all means and get an email back saying somebody will get back to me. They never do. It's just common courtesy to get back to me. Since they've already gone broke once and appear to have no intention of fullfilling the order I intend to contact PayPal to try to get a refund.

I’d give less than one star if I could

Placed an order on 19/11/25 for “in stock” items which said they would be shipped within 1-2 business days and received within 1-2 weeks. I AM STILL WAITING!!!!!

I have sent 4 emails with my order number with no response. I have used the chat box to speak with “Trish” who then sent me an email which I replied to immediately and got no response back.

My books are still “waiting to be picked” and now surely will not arrive before Christmas.

Customer service is incredibly poor and resolution of problems is non-existent as nobody replies to emails.

I will not be providing my order number again - look me up and reply to any of the other four emails I have sent instead.

Customer Service is horrid

Customer Service is horrid. Trying to reach this company is extremely hard.

Feels like a scam

Looks like I'm not alone in giving Booktopia a 1-star review. I seem to be having the same experience other people are having. My order has not been processed and it's far exceeded the time promised. I contacted customer service who assured me they were processing and sending part of my order while waiting for the other item to arrive in the country. But they didn't do it (I suspect it was an exercise in managing my expectations more than anything). Customer service is unresponsive. I've been patient and polite the entire time, but I'm really appalled at this point. I ordered two children's books as gifts in plenty of time for Christmas. I'll probably go through paypal for a refund. This just reeks of scam. Once they have your money, they don't seem to care after that. I'm never purchasing from them again.

STILL A SCAM COMPANY

When Booktopia flat out lied to customers that they weren't going bust, I lost a lot of money on books I had ordered when they went bust.
Fast forward to now, I decided that surely they are better now since they returned. I ordered a book that booktopia promised to arrive in time for christmas, over a week later, I still had no tracking or email about my order being shipped so I sent an email. 3 days later I got a super casual reply saying they dont have it in stocks and it will be up to 3 weeks before the supplier sends it to them...2 WEEKS OUT FROM CHRISTMAS.
THIS COMPANY ARE LIARS AND THIEVES AND I AM SO ANGRY I GOT SCAMMED BY THEM AGAIN.

Said the book was in stock and 5-10 business days. Was a Christmas present. Book not arrived and they changed it to 'backorder' on their website after I ordered it and had paid extra because no other sites had the book. Be wary if they say book is in stock and it appears to be a scarce book elsewhere because they use third parties but dont disclose that. Many similar reviews.

In stock items are shipped in 1-2 business days and not 5-10 business days from our Sydney Distribution Centre. If a book says it ships in 5-10 business days then it is not a stocked item and needs to be ordered in from a supplier.

Shipping timeframes can vary from supplier to supplier depending if it is a local or international supplier. Shipping timeframes can take anywhere from 3-5 business days, 5-7 business days, 7-10 business days, 10-15 business days, 15-25 business days and 15-30 business days.
