Boost Collective uses Dark Patterns

I’m an independent artist who happens to have a background in regulatory compliance and certain consumer protection acts related to e-commerce, marketing and advertising. After reading many positive reviews, it was a complete disappointment to learn through my own experience, that Boost Collective heavily employs what regulators refer to as “Dark Patterns” to deceive and manipulate consumers into making unintended purchases – through both, the design of its website and the use of misleading communications.

After adding any of their campaign packages to your online cart, with or without any visible add-ons at cost, their website displays your order total, but “hides” a section of the invoice which by default opts you in to a monthly subscription. The subscription includes a free trial, so consumers do not initially notice any hidden/ additional costs to their intended purchase – which is likely by design. To see the option for opting out of that subscription, you must first notice that there’s a tiny toggle labeled “view detailed invoice,” and only after clicking on it, you’d observe that you’ve been automatically opted into their subscription, and only at that point, can remove it from the invoice.

Once the checkout process is complete and payment is remitted, consumers immediately receive an email requesting a review on Trust Pilot – although it would be virtually impossible for anyone to gauge performance at that stage. Boost Collective likely aims to collect as many positive ratings as possible, before consumers encounter any potential issues – and it’s also conceivable that consumers might presume a favorable review (upfront) could improve the quality of services they are meant to receive.

If you happen to locate the opt-out option for the automated subscription before checkout, also expect to receive an email marked “Action Needed” shortly after – which encourages you to “Upgrade for Free” – so that you can opt back in to the same paid subscription.

If you Google “FTC Dark Patterns” you should find several articles on the subject to compare with Boost Collective’s unlawful tactics.

As for the quality of services received thus far, I purchased the Gold package for one song and it was placed on 8 playlists (as of Jan. 5, 2026). 4 of those playlists are considered non-relevant in terms of genre, etc., which I have raised as an issue (no response from Boost as yet). My purchase also included an add-on for 2x playlists pitches and 2x playlist duration – and those add-ons have not yet been honored. Based on Spotify for Artists statistics, each of those playlists have resulted in 0 (or less than 3) streams thus far, granted it’s only been 2 days.

Unless overall performance somehow comes to outweigh my experience thus far, I’ll likely demand a full refund and also report my findings to the appropriate consumer protection agencies.

Hi Kurt,

Regarding all of your "FTC Dark Patterns" claims, I cannot comment because I am Customer Service and it isn't within my knowledge base to speak on that.

I can speak on your campaign progress though. We do our best to keep responses within a 48hr time period so my apologies on the delay from your original email on Monday. To reiterate what I stated within the reply, I am working with the pitching team to get different placements as best we can that better align with what you want.

The Finance team was told today to refund you for your add-ons as we want to be a good partner with you on your project. We are still doing the work in pitching you to double the amount of curators but still want to stress that a pitch does not equal a placement in a playlist. You also will remain on the lists that we do get confirmation of placement of for twice the amount of time.

Boost Collective Doesn't Listen To Customers

While their website says otherwise, the user dashboard does not allow you to manage your campaigns. Rather, you must email their painfully slow customer service to cancel or make modifications. Nevertheless, attempting to do that results in nonstop sales pitches and excuses instead of the desired action. Pricing is unclear and playlists are bottom tier and not genre-appropriate (essentially just supersized playlists from curators taking advantage of payola). For a company that spends a lot of time doing damage control on review sites such as TrustPilot and Google Reviews, Boost Collective does little to improve its image as a legitimate business by not implementing the some of the many reasonable suggestions that have been offered by unhappy customers. Lots of lip service, loud graphics, and catchy marketing to lure naive and undiscerning artists hoping to make a dent in this industry. If this company were based in the United States, they would likely have drawn the well-deserved ire of every state's Attorney General.

It’s honestly pretty disappointing…

It’s honestly pretty disappointing because I expected more from Boost Collective. I go to check on my campaign today and it says my song was added to 3 playlist so I’m like cool right? NO! First, the playlist are lyrical playlist and a 2000s playlist, why is this a problem you might ask? Well, because the song I’m promoting is more of a Trap Soul R&B type of song so how does it fit with any of those playlist? That’s not even the kicker! Guess what? MY SONG DOESNT EVEN SHOW UP ON THESE PLAYLIST LOL. I don’t know why give me the option to view each playlist to NOT even see my song on there it’s ridiculous, if this doesn’t get fixed I will not be using Boost Collective again and will gladly take my music and money elsewhere.

Hi NoLuvMoe,

I personally reviewed your campaign, and your song is currently live on all three playlists shown in your dashboard:

• Lyrical Hip-Hop — position #70
• POV: The 2000s — position #99
• Lyrical Killas — position #86

These placements are visible directly on Spotify.

I totally understand that genre fit is subjective. If you feel certain playlists aren’t the right match for your sound, we’re always happy to repitch your song to alternative playlists that better align with what your preferences for the track are. Just reach out to our support team like you did on Sunday and ask to be repitched.

We encourage you to re-check the playlists directly on Spotify, and if you’d like adjustments made, our team at Boost Collective is here to help.

Absolute scam and a waste of money

purchased the Pro bundle for one of my songs. After not being able to login into the account I purchased the bundle with, it gave me an error message saying link invalid or expired after clicking on the link in the confirmation email. After that I went ahead and messaged their support about it. They didn't gave me any answers until three weeks later and didn't help a lot. I needed to create a new account just to see my order. I was also unable to cancel anything directly through them so I messaged the Paypal support issuing a refund. I didn't see any results from their service and saw my streams even dropping by a lot after the bundle was purchased. Then I bought their Pro subscription for the 14 day trial for $0 to check my analytics on their website but couldn't find anything. I went ahead and canceled it right away but they still charged me the subscription fee. 100% not recommending and keep your hands away from them or possibly any similar playlisting service.

Edit: After messaging the support about it again they promised to refund the subscription and wanted to compromise me with new playlist placements. As you can read from this review I clearly won‘t trust this service again. In the same email they requested me to put down this negative review, which is illegal. Please avoid them at all cost.
This is a part of their support email: „ we would also like to request that you be able to edit your review as we are still taking actions on your campaign in making sure it gets better streams and are even willing to provide a partial refund in exchange that the negative review be removed given that the rebuilt campaign after 30 days does not satisfy or provide the target estimated streams that we advertise.

We also want to note that the analytics on our website is only available for clients that distribute with us which is why your analytics does not show up even since you do not distribute with us. Also the review you have left states that you weren't able to log in however you did mention not seeing your analytics which means you were able to log in eventually. But yeah going back we do request that the negative review be taken down as we take extra measure to make the adjustments needed for the campaign and further clarifications on the concerns you currently have.“

Hi Till,

Thanks for taking the time to leave a detailed review. We want to clarify a few points for accuracy and transparency.

• Your first support request was received on November 23rd. Our initial response went out on December 6th, which was later than usual due to an unusually high volume during Black Friday / Cyber Monday. While not ideal, this delay was isolated to that period as you can see from our consistent replies since.

• The login issue was successfully resolved. Your order was originally placed using a different email address than the one you later attempted to log in with. At your request, our customer service team migrated the order to your preferred email account, which allowed you full access to your campaign. This was the primary issue you contacted support about, and it was resolved.

• Regarding analytics: analytics within our dashboard are only available to artists who distribute with us, which was explained in our email correspondence. This is why no analytics populated for your account.

• Taking in your feedback re: Boost Pro we did issue a refund on December 24th, and we can confirm that refund was processed successfully.

We’re sorry this experience didn’t meet your expectations, and we genuinely wish you the best with your career moving forward.
