BUPA insurance in Saudi Arabia…
While I was employed in Saudi Arabia and covered by company insurance with BUPA. My son Maxwell suffered a sudden seizure in March 2018 while we were on a weekend break in Bahrain. He was in the Radisson Hotel when he fell, bumped his head, dislocated and broke his shoulder. I took him to the (free) local government hospital where they treated him. He was scheduled to return to the UK the next day, so I made an appointment for him to see a specialist in London at the earliest opportunity after speaking to the Aramco John’s Hopkins hospital in Saudi Arabia as I knew several senior staff there. I also immediately registered a claim with my BUPA insurance provider AON in Saudi Arabia, providing quotations for the consultation, tests and diagnosis. Upon completion, I also provided the invoices, proof of payment and reports. All within the specified timescale. The total cost for all services was £1,440.
All along the way, BUPA / AON made life as difficult as possible, requesting more information, to include the actual image files from the tests. This necessitated several visits to the London clinic costing over £100, but I duly complied. I have a huge amount of emails for reference and made several calls to BUPA in Saudi Arabia. I also tried to complain to your UK customer services office but was passed on the BUPA Arabia, who simply brush this under the carpet.
Almost a year after the claim, I was paid exactly 20% of the claim amount, on the basis that I did not submit all of the required documents. I therefore submitted all documents once again, with evidence that they were already submitted. Excuses were also made that I did not submit them within the time specified, so I provided evidence that I did. I was then advised that I was paid only 20% due to BUPA’s discount structure with local service providers. Clearly this is just an excuse. I also negotiated a substantial discount whilst arranging the consultation and tests, and the actual costs were less than the initial claim quotations.
The AON representative Mr Ben Casey simply refers me to BUPA Arabia.
The BUPA Arabia representative Mr Afaf Abdullah refers me to AON.
BUPA Customer Relations in the UK say they passed my claim to BUPA International, who don’t communicate with me.
Through my employer in Saudi Arabia, I had 11 years of satisfactory health insurance with BUPA for myself and my family of four children. Unfortunately, this incident happened as I was in the process of demobilizing from Saudi Arabia, which I feel is the reason for the lack of interest from BUPA Arabia and their Agent AON. I am seen as a past customer now.
I recommend to avoid BUPA insurance in Saudi Arabia wherever possible.
