A sneaky way to extract money from people

I didn't realize that I was paying a monthly membership for a book bought from them 10 months ago! So I ended up paying 150£ for a book. Also, I didn't find any email saying that I was subscribing to a membership, only an email confirming my order. This is totally dishonest and I wonder if I can persecute them. I've now found out how to cancel a membership that I never subscribed to. But I want my money back!

This complaint seems very common if you…

This complaint seems very common if you read through the reviews; I’ve just noticed £15 going out of my bank account the last 3 months on further investigation it’s for a book club membership. I don’t recall signing up to this but apparently when I purchased a £3.79 book, I did. They will not refund the monies so I feel I’ve paid £48.79 for the book. Stay away from this company they are total scammers!!!! I shall continue to warn people about this company on social media. They can’t keep getting away with this.

I am sorry to hear that you perceive us as having scammed you, but we hide absolutely nothing about our membership.

We provide this information you refer to during the entire purchase process and is therefore not something you can avoid seeing. It is given via a pop-up window, on our large banner on the front page, on each individual product, on the product page, in the shopping basket and at the end of the purchase. In addition, we require that you yourself actively accept our membership terms in order to complete your purchase, after which we send a confirmation of both your purchase and membership.

It appears on all our products that you can choose between two prices, namely our member price or our guest price. Our guest price is a competitive price and is perfectly fine, but as a member you get the opportunity to shop at our exclusive shopping prices and get free shipping on every order, which means you can quickly achieve big savings.

The choice is, in its simplicity, your own which of the prices you want to trade at.

Of course, you must take into account the information that appears on the website.

Manipulative Scam - DO NOT USE

This company is a scam. Do not use them! I ordered a £4.50 book in 2021 and just noticed they've charged me £15 every month, stealing £300 from my account. I have asked then to provide an archived version of their site following proof online that the membership t&cs were not clear at the time and they have stopped replying to me, an obvious sign of guilt.

Edit to reply to Christopher - I have sent multiple emails to the customer service address and since requesting my data I'm being ignored. Appalling customer service on top of everything else it seems! The information you are offering in your reply is based on the site now, I'm asking for proof that I was offered all relevant information when purchasing in 2021. The fact you are actively ignoring me now suggests you are guilty of manipulation. Do the decent thing and send me the data I requested so and if it proves I didn't get the pop-up (with the guardian article I sent you suggests I wouldn't have) then refund me the large sum of money you have stolen from me. Its called morals!

As we state all the way through our website, we are a members club, and by choosing our members price it is required for you to sign up for our membership. This information is handed to you from the start to the very end. When you come to our website you are welcomed with a pop-up window telling you all this, as well on the front page on a banner, each of our products, on the product page, in your basket, when finishing the purchase. Before you even can complete the purchase you have at the very end the requirement to accept the membership conditions in order to finish your purchase. Hereafter you receive a confirmation of both your order and membership.

Although our normal price is a competative price our members price gets you the exclusive access to our cost prices and gives you free shipping with every order you may place, which blows other companies prices out of the way as you get the unique opportunity to make great savings.

The choice is all yours.

You do of course need to take into consideration of what information is handed before making a purchase.

I just discovered a sneaky monthly subscription for £15 per month that was auto selected when I bought something for 4.99.
The customer service say that they can't refund me for the payments to this worthless service.

Poor communication

Poor communication! Automatically sign you up to have a membership when it doesn’t give you a clear option to select the none membership and then charge you £15 a month! Don’t get back to you when emailing or if they do it’s in a different language! Appalling!!!

£9.99 'membership' fee taken from my account

I registered for an account and membership in November, £15 fee was taken from my bank account on 30th November 2022, I sent an email to cancel this membership on the 28th November this was confirmed and I was informed that I could take advantage of the membership for the month that I had paid for. I placed two orders, payment taken from my account on 30th November and 7th December, this is well within the membership period. I have since made no other purchases. On 9th January 2023, a payment of £9.99 was taken from my account, this clearly should not have been taken, and although I have emailed and explained several times, they are so far refusing to refund the £9.99. I should have followed the advice on here, very poor customer service.

Avoid this company

The same as other reviews I bought a jigsaw for £10 and was automatically put on a monthly subscription.
So far I’ve paid £30 for it after checking my bank statement.
No one mentioned a membership which I have now cancelled.
I’ve tried to phone customer service but the number does not exist, and apparently they’re also off line.
I’m not good sighted so didn’t see the small print about the membership, common curtesy with an email should have been sent instead of helping themselves to £15 a month out of my account without being notified first.
I’m absolutely furious with this scamming company and not being able to contact them proves it.

Not good

Not good. Ordered a book and it did not mention subscription. Did in email after purchase. Not right and this company should be banned. I have emailed to cancel a subscription I knew nothing about. I “ joined” as I thought you had to join site to purchase the book. It’s a con.

BEWARE SCAM STEALTH SUBSCRIPTION CHARGE SCAM

This company was taking a monthly £15 subscription from me without my knowledge or consent.

They have replied below that they do not have my information which is a lie. I have bought books occasionally from this site and others but this site applied a stealth subscription charge that I did not have knowledge of or consent to. Only by checking my bank statement in the new year was I able to see what they were doing.

Very sneaky and unethical business practice. BEWARE OF THIS COMPANY.

£45 taken from my account!

I purchased a £4 book from this site and since is has taken £45 from my account (3 lots of £15). I did not knowingly sign up to any membership with them. I regret ever going on their site and they are clearly very sneaky about tricking customers in to signing up to memberships so they can steal directly from their bank account. I see from these reviews that I am not the only victim of this.
