Moon Conker Stay

I booked this stay as a surprise for my girlfriend’s 30th birthday and it will definitely be one to remember, perhaps not for all of the right reasons. After reading many glowing reviews about the moon conker, we were sure that this was going to be the romantic and relaxing getaway we were after. Prior to arrival I received a message stating that there will be no running water for the shower or drinking water due to frozen pipes. We camp often, love the outdoors and are not afraid of a bit of mud, so we didn’t think it would have much of a impact to our stay. Approaching the estate the roads were very icy and covered in snow; we were unable to get our car up the hill on to the estate itself, so had to park at the side of the road. As we were unpacking our car we briefly met the hosts who informed us that we had about a 1 mile and a half walk to the moon conker. Although this was a long walk with all our belongings in the dark we did not mind it, however we wanted to make future guests aware that this is a possibility in the winter months. The hosts also told us to be careful of the steps around the Moonconker as they were a little slippy due to the ice. We had hiking boots on but we feel there is a difference between being careful and the steps being unsafe for use, with us slipping and falling many times over the weekend. So much so that my girlfriend spent time melting and clearing the steps to make it safer for us. The Moonconker itself is an unique accommodation, however we found the bed was not a "hotel quality mattress" as advertised and in actual fact is soft play modules velcroed together which came apart during the night. Due to the cold weather we had to rely on the wood burner; we were disappointed on arrival to find wet kindling and wood and had to clean out the ash tray ourselves as it was full. Once we got the wood burner going we did find it heated up the conker very well however, even having to open the door at night time to cool us down.

We were informed that even though the shower pipes had frozen, the baths were still operable, which we thought was great, as we needed a welcomed wash after a long day hiking and a 5 hour car drive. However, we did not expect it would take over 6 hours to heat up half of one of the baths with lukewarm water (and that was with pans of water also on the fire pit and the gas stove!) As this was our only form of a wash during our stay, we did unfortunately leave feeling a bit grubby and the Scandi-style baths experience was not the relaxing experience we were after! It was also a shame that our area was not completely secluded, with people walking past the road above; however we understand that this could be more private in the summer when there are leaves on the surrounding trees. Again, due to the frozen pipes, we were advised to wash the utensils in the nearby river. We felt that this was unhygienic, especially as some of the kitchen utensils were already dirty. With it being -5 as well, the washing up liquid and hand soap was frozen and therefore couldn’t be used.

As previously mentioned we are seasoned campers but we even found the toilet inaccessible to use at night time, the steps up from the river bank again were thick with snow with only a piece of rope tied to trees for guidance and support. We found it hard to find the toilet on the first night in the dark even with a torch. A word of warning there is a small ladder to climb up to the toilet and if you are vegan like ourselves there are a couple of animal skulls as decorations to accompany you while you do your business.

We do not want this review to sound terrible, and although it was not the relaxing weekend we were after, we did enjoy ourselves and laughed through the bad bits; however we want future guests to book the Moon Conker being fully aware of what their stay will look like. The estate itself is extremely peaceful and magical, especially in the snow! The Moon Conker also hosts beautiful clear skies and amazing star gazing, which is one of the reasons I booked it! A pair of star gazing suitable chairs would be a nice touch, rather than having to use the plastic garden ones. And now we know that you offer an eco-friendly off grid experience, as it does not really suggest the level of this in your AirBnB description. However, for the price you pay, we would expect some personal touches and some elements of luxury such as the bed being made as a bare minimum.

Two weeks ago the weather was exceptionally cold and temperatures, in the Cambrian Mountains sub zero. Although the Conker itself is fit for purpose in such weather, the approach road and water to the sink froze and we had to dismantle the extra shower which we put in as a bonus ( not advertised) in case the unit blew. We then rang our clients and suggested they may prefer to come another time. I do understand therefore that Darren, having chosen to come, felt the lack of some of those staples but felt for fairness, that the fact he took that risk should be included in any reply to this very helpful and detailed review.

Darren, thanks so much for your review. It will really help us pinpoint areas we can improve, including including an improved winter warning. We have had many people visit over this cold snap, many, who, like you found the Chillderness Red Kite Estate magical under snow. We are glad too, that you found the starry night skies as wonderful as you had hoped, on your girlfriend’s 30 birthday. I hope that the outdoor bath, once heated , was memorable for the right reasons. If the air and water temperature is subzero it will take a long, long time to heat.“Bring extra wine” one of our guests wrote” it is worth it”, hopefully you agree.

I am a little puzzled about some of your comments given that I did personally telephone you to alert you to the fact that due to the extreme weather you might like to come another day. You chose to take the risk and said you’d let us know after a night if your girlfriend- whose birthday it was - didn’t like it. We didn’t hear and stayed for the two nights. Hopefully this means you did like it :)

That said, we are truly sorry some of your stay was not as you had hoped. Keeping a year-round WildGlamping off-grid retreat open, has gone very well this first full winter, but we do not havé control over the changing elements of course, which could alter the vibe from zen to challenging in an instant. Again this affects some people more than others and should be taken into consideration when choosing a pod at the height of winter. Our Earth Conker has heating, wifi and electricity for example. Our dedicated housekeepers hiked to the site ( you saw them) and did a great job to clean it for you but apologise if there were some less than clean utensils. They too, will not know what they will find till they get there and they too, will have been challenged by the frozen water pipes to do the washing up. I do not know why you say the loo was inaccessible in air bnb where I first wrote this response: in this, your trust pilot review, you said you went to the loo ( and didn’t like the decor) but there was snow making it hard. We will look into better rails.

We do say in our advertising that the modular bed will be configured as sofas and tables on arrival because most people will arrive in daylight and, we presume, will want to use it to sit on and enjoy the fire if they are not outdoors. It is a simple bed to assemble at bed time and we will look into the firmness of the mattress. Perhaps with its popularity this year we already need to update it though I assure you it is hand made with good quality materials.

Thanks to your feedback we have now updated our the air bnb guest information with a severe weather warning. If you let us know your address we can arrange to send your girlfriend some hand made vegan brownies as a birthday thank you for being good sports and enjoying the weekend overall. Thanks again for the detailed feedback.

Red kite Barn and Childerness Estate is…

Red kite Barn and Childerness Estate is one of the most amazing places to stay.
The Barn is super comfortable and spacious , open plan with windows to the most beautiful scenery. The barn is well stocked with everything you may need, from logs, to literature and if your a keen cook, then you will love cooking here ! A fabulous screen protector that comes down from the ceiling and a great section of movies . A remote setting so peaceful, your worries just melt away.
The surrounding estates is full of walks and wildlife, shopping, eating and more walks a short drive . cant wait to go back !

WOW WOW WOW

WOW!
Going off grid for the first ever time to celebrate our 30th wedding anniversary & being total ‘townies’ was such a liberating experience!
We barely left the estate & didn’t see a single person = heaven!
We learned a lot during our 4 nights & totally embraced the whole experience.
Excellent kitchen supplies & very comfortable bed. Loads of wood supplies & great instructions on how to warm your bath.
Pigs, horses, sheep & amazing birds were aplenty.
We WILL be back & want to try Dragons egg next time.
If you’re not sure this is for you….DO IT. You won’t regret it.

Llareggub Beech House

We spent a wonderful week at Llareggub at the end of March '22. The house suited us perfectly. The style is somewhat eccentric ( which we loved) and very comfortable. The views are exceptional. It was tempting to sit all day long on the comfortable sofa and watch the comings and goings of Saundersfoot but then we would have missed the pleasure of the nearby coastal walks and our dog would have missed his much-loved runs on the spectacular beeches nearby. A week to remember.

Cannot wait to return!

Cannot wait to return!
Our family and close family friends visited together in December 2021, after riding out many lockdowns and changing the visit dates several times, our trip was definitely worth the wait. We all loved every minute, adults and children included. Stunned by the views on a daily basis, we loved exploring the areas surrounding the barn. Feeding the pigs each day was a highlight of the trip. The barn itself had everything we needed and was a home from home. We cannot wait to get booked in for a return visit.

Absolutely amazing experience

My boyfriend and I stayed at Red Kite Tree Tent - Ynys Affalon. The most amazing weekend and experience we’ve had. Absolutely beautiful and everything we needed was provided. We was guided by easy to use directions which we then found our tree tent in the distance. As we got to our tree tent everything looked as exactly how it does on the pictures. The views were amazing, we was provided with treats and goodies and the kitchen area was better than expected it included everything we needed a cooker, kettle, etc , everything was easy to use. The view of our tree tent was beautiful was above a flowing river and a gorgeous view. The pod itself was cosy. The first night I was anxious as we got there a little late and it went dark very quick, it was only ourselves there however we both felt so safe and secure and we both slept amazing, found the pod so comfy to sleep in. We didn’t need to contact our hosts once during the weekend stay every we needed was provided, easy to use, there’s a hot shower, toilet, hot water tap and cold. Exceeded out expectations as we was completely middle of the woods. We will definitely be booking again in summer as the experience was unreal. There’s no signal however it honestly gets you away from everything and enjoy peace, woke up in the morning hearing the tweeting birds and the river underneath everything was so peaceful. I would recommend to bring head torches as night time is very dark however even though you are our there on your own you feel so safe. The best experience can’t wait to rebook as we could of stayed there longer. Everything is provided even for making your own fires etc. Amazing experience can’t thank our hosts enough. This was our first time doing anything like this and we absolutely loved it. Can not wait to go again. So peaceful nice getaway absolutely stunning views

Wonderful family get together…

Wonderful family get together (including one dog) to celebrate 40th wedding anniversary at redkite barn. We had everything we needed for our comfort. The highlight for me is the situation of the barn - so peaceful and secluded with just the local horses for company. We enjoyed a lovely evening around the fire pit - grateful for the supply of logs. Lovely dark skies for star and moon gazing.
David and Anjana were very easy to talk to and very helpful. It was lovely to watch films via the projector.
Do visit the Gigrin Redit Kite feeding centre an amazing experience. An unexpected pleasure was discovering spectacular varieties of mushrooms and toadstools. Some of which are posted on instagram. Our week stay in Oct. 21 was just what we needed.

It was a pleasure to meet you all on that crisp November day and to meet your parents celebrating that special anniversary. Thanks so much for coming- may the road rise up with them ( as I believe they say in the auld country). Tell them they will have to come back to plant their anniversary bulbs and that the pigs have thrived througout the winter. All best,

We had a truly wonderful stay at Ynys…

We had a truly wonderful stay at Ynys Affalon at Red Kite Tree Tents, in Powys, Wales. It was our first time in a tree tent and the experience of being suspended amongst the trees was exhilarating. Loved that there was a burner in the tent, and we could make our own fire by the river, on which we cooked too. (Food tastes great when cooked on wood and looking at stars!)
A huge bonus were all the wild creatures who dropped by, three gorgeous wild ponies who sauntered past regularly, curious squirrells, robyns, finches, and a whole dawn chorus of birds. Oh and sheep, pigs and super cute piglets who we fed.
As an artist, there was inspiration everywhere in the dramatic Cambrian mountain landscapes around us. I couldn't stop drawing!
Really appreciated our stay here and thank you Anjana and David for creating these incredible spaces where we can connect to and delight in nature. Can't wait to revisit.

Dear Chitra,
What a beautiful review thank you so much for taking the trouble to recreate those memories. Please do let us see some of the artwork that you created, do you have any specifics relating to Red Kite? Perhaps we can make a card for other Chilldernessers...

Next time you come, do try the Moon Conker, I think it will really appeal to your creative nature!

Llareggub meets Saundersfoot

It was so lovely to be back in Pembrokeshire where my husband spent his holidays in his youth. Llareggub in Saundersfoot was the perfect base for walking the beaches of Pembrokeshire. The view of the harbour from the living room was fantastic, watching the boats coming and going. Llareggub is a truly an eclectic mix of styles and materials, something fun around each corner. The bathrooms were amazing!

Llareggub August 2021.
Just back from a wonderful stay at Llareggub in Saundersfoot. This place is amazing.
David & Anjana have created a one off, with the most wonderful views of Saundersfoot, which in itself is a great place to holiday.
This was our second week of our summer holidays, coming from The Lakes, and Llareggub proved the perfect place to relax and enjoy what South Wales has to offer.
Will definitely book again with Chillderness, as we now have an insight into what great places these guys create, and what love and effort they put in!

Dear Tara & Richard,
Thank you so much for the warmly appreciative review of your stay at our Llareggub Beach House in Saundersfoot. It was a pleasure to have you and your family stay, and it is always lovely to hear that our guests have enjoyed the quirky nature of the house as well as the amazing views. Do please consider another of the Chillderness collection of equally unusual properties; we now have a second coastal property (also with spectacular views, but looking back towards Saundersfoot and Tenby) which may tempt you next time!

A magical tree tent heaven!

A magical tree tent heaven!
We had originally booked here for my 40th birthday, a very special trip for many reasons, and gutted it had to be cancelled due to the lockdown. So a year later we finally made the trip to the green tree tent and WOW WOW WOW.
Pure heaven. Immersed in nature, no phone signal, nothing but just the sounds of the stream, the wind in the trees and the hundreds of birds, and the sheep too! I could have stayed here for ages.
The outdoors shower is wonderful - so warm, and special! Plus most mornings I showered watching treecreepers hop up the tree above me. Stuff of dreams!
The double bed in the tree tent is quite small, so if you are broad shouldered (like myself and my partner) it can be a bit of a squeeze - so we split the two parts of the mattress and worked out an alternative that suited us well. And we slept soundly each night with the amazing sounds of the stream below us.
Time slowed down. Peace ensued. It was the perfect camping experience.
We also got to meet some of the owners as they worked on the new pig enclosure, and it was fascinating to learn more about their story of the place and the future projects too. Plus the pigs are gorgeous!
We will be back for sure!

Aww thank you Lois for the lovely review - I think you were in Ynys? It's so lovely there down by the stream and I'm so glad you managed to spot the ponies, it's such a treat to see them when they wander wild like that. Also very glad to hear you spotted the piggies and their lovely new piglets.
Do come back and stay again - you can try one of the Conkers next time (or the barn if you feel like something a bit more luxurious!)

The Conker

What can I say apart from incredible , romantic, freedom, all in one place (The Conker) surprised my partner to this amazing place last december 2020 just before we went back into lockdown. To celebrate her 40th she had no idea where I was taking her and all I can say we both will cherish those two amazing nights there and never forget them .

Beach House Pembrokeshire

We stayed at the Beach House for 4 nights and it was simple incredible.
The beach house offers amazing views on the sea from all the bedrooms and living room.
It was modern and well equipped and we simply loved the decor.
The location was great! A very short walk down to saundersfoot, perfect for a stroll. Also has a Tesco nearby and lots of cafes/restaurants within walking distance.
Also dog friendly and our puppy had the best time having his nose glued to the window and enjoying the views!
Would definitely be going there again!!

Three lovely nights in the Red Kite Conker

We spent three lovely nights in the Red Kite Conker in June 2021. It is an amazing structure in a beautiful location, surrounded by fantastic scenery. The Conker is comfortable and cleverly designed, so that it provided everything you need for a relaxing stay.
Our only criticism would be that the USB charging points don't work - they don't seem to be connected.

Thanks so much for letting us know about the USB chargers - we'll look into that immediately and solve it as soon as possible.
Come back again and visit soon - you should try the tree tents next time!

Boris didn’t put anything on the green list…

Boris didn’t put anything on the green list… so a staycation it was, however, we didn’t feel short changed staying at this beautiful beach house.

Waking up to those views in the morning was simply beautiful, the house was very well equipped and felt very homely.

Some fantastic walks (the beach to the right of the harbour allow dogs - Rocky loved it and enjoyed a swim each morning) and some great spots to eat (I’d recommend booking early… some restaurants were fully booked weeks in advance)

The Old Chemist Inn pub was good for live music in the evenings and Sue’s Pantry great for cakes! We had a great time quad biking at Ritec- Valley in Tenby, the off road trail was good fun.

We enjoyed every minute and will definitely be staying again in the future!

Highly recommended Family fun getaway

Our family of five, plus the dog had the most wonderful stay at the Saundersfoot, Pembrokeshire Beach house. The space is so creative and comfortable and it was an absolute pleasure just to hang out here.. what an incredible view! But.. there is also so much to explore in this stunning part of Wales. There was never a dull day - surfing, kayaking, SUP, walking in this jaw dropping country. We ran out of time to do everything - one week was just not enough..! Our kids (whose age range from 10 to 17) completely loved this holiday too. A large part of us really did not want to leave. We will be back.
