I know how the "sausage is made"

Full disclosure. I am both a customer and an employee of Compass Mining. I see how the "sausage is made" and I trust my colleagues enough to put my money into it.

That's right everyone-- Even I am a client of Compass mining, and I also work here. Once you know how the sausage is made, and you get to know our team as well-- You'll see us for what we are. A team dedicated to doing good business and here to help everyone mine bitcoin. Moves and outages are part of the industry, and why people can host miners so cheaply--which is essential to having a low cost of generation. Our marketplace makes mining liquid. You can get in, and get out.

I bought 2 miners in about June or July…

I bought 2 miners in about June or July 2021. Those miners were slated to go online in about November 2021. They came online in about February of 2022 and I was given a year of free hosting for those two miners.

Later that spring I bought 3 more miners. In July I had 4 or 5 miners up and running, but two weeks later 4 of the miners went down and stayed down for over 6 months.

I then had 1 miner up and running intermittently and 4 of the 5 miners were always in transit somewhere else in some big project they were working on according to the support people. It is now August 2023, and one of my miners broke in like March or so 2023 and I forfeited that miner. I was trying to sell the three miners that I had bought, each of them costing about 7 to 8 thousand dollars a piece. But they wouldn't let me sell them, but one of them ended up breaking down. So now I have 4 miners on my hashing schedule.

The 5th miner I had purchased finally came online I think in December 2022, the last two miners I bought were newer ones like 100 tH/s 3050 watts barely used or new and these were cheaper than the others since the price of BTC had gown down so much over the years.

So I never really got to use my year of free hosting because they kept those miners offline for nearly a year. And then when I asked for my year they said that that was for the prior year.

And now they bill me for hosting fees for 4 miners, but only 2 of them really actually seem to work. I tried to sell the two that do not work, but I became "unverified". And because I refused to pay for hosting fees for miners that do not work or seem to ever be on they have stopped all the miners I own from hashing. And I would have to spend about 1500$ to get them to start hashing again.

I've spent 35k on miners and maybe 20k on hosting fees, but alot of what I was spending was downtime credits because my miners were literally always down for months and months and months and months etc.

Hello James,

Ultimately we just want to do good business and we operate at scale, this leaves room for issues sometimes, and it is important to have tight communication with us along the way. I would like to get a better understanding of what transpired in your situation and make it as right as we can.

Disappointed by the "unprofessional" handling of difficult but not unexpected situations

I have been a customer of this company for nearly two years now, and I am very disappointed and regret having chosen them as a home for my miners.

When handling the whole  „Texas situation" as a whole — that is, the delay in finishing the site in the first place in February 2022 with a huge delay in deploying the ASICs for mining, maintaining power uptime, and communication with customers — it is a complete mess and seriously lacking management and organization skills.

I do not mean that in a sarcastic or ironic way; that is my conclusion when reviewing my mail and ticket history. And, of course, the many down times since the start of hashing.

When reviewing my tickets, I can clearly see customer service is understaffed. I am asking simple questions that have not been answered for 7 days, and I have to actively ask for feedback to get only some unspecific answers referencing  generic „Site Updates" posted on their website. I still did not receive a satisfying answer to some of my questions.

Although they state that there is a monitoring service established, one of my miners went offline, and the „Monitoring Team" did not realize that for 7 days!? Is this a serious business?

When asking what was going on, I received a   „we contacted our on-site team" and had to wait  for an answer for over seven days!

Compass Mining has now decided to refurbish their Texas 4 sites and relocate the ASICs.

If delaying responses is not intentional to stall customers like me, this is definitely a sign of mismanagement.

I still don’t have an idea where my miners currently are, and I did not receive a rough estimate of when my miners will be cleaned or an estimated date when they will arrive at the backup facility and start hashing again.

Please be aware that when ordering hosting in Texas, you may encounter the same mismanagement and problems yourself.

Hello Gregor,

I noticed you lacked mentioning videocalls in your response, and that is indeed one of the best ways for our clients to get expedient support on matters such as this above. Just hit this link here:

That being said, you touch on a subject that brings large portions of the client population much stress when upfront expectations aren't set. The outages and moves you experienced are by design, this service carries a 95% SLA for this reason instead of the western standard 99.999%, service of that quality would cost well over $2000 a month, at $175.80 you can host an asic with us and make some concessions in terms of uptime to get the absolute lowest cost of generation. This is a best practice that has been with the business since its time in China. I believe upfront expectations about this are key to a healthy client psychology when they opt to take a position like this. I am here to escalate tickets and set expectations for new and excising clients.

We could easily hire more people and raise prices, the service would get much better but the service would be the wrong tool for the job when the business problem is mining.

Asic overheating for about a month

I purchased an Antminer S19XP that came online on the expected date. I didn't encounter any significant issues until about a month ago, when the ASIC began to only hash at 50% capacity every day. I suspect this might be due to the hot weather and inadequate ventilation at the hosting facility. There could also be dust accumulation within the machine (Indiana compass code 81x). In my most recent support ticket, they provided a very generic response, mentioning that they would attempt to improve the situation. However, it's been a month, and the ASIC has been going offline for an average of 12 hours per day.

To exacerbate matters, Compass does not offer credits unless the issue pertains to the facility as a whole. When I was considering the purchase of my ASIC, I had a video call with a Compass representative. However, after becoming a customer, every issue must be submitted through support tickets.

This entire situation is disheartening for me, as I'm a strong believer in Bitcoin mining and have a positive outlook. If Compass had a more prompt and effective response to such situations, I would gladly recommend their services to many of my fellow Bitcoin enthusiasts.

I've been with Compass mining since… June 2021

Update 6/17/24 I take back all the good things mentioned below. This company is a fraud. STAY AWAY! I'm using simple mining now and much happier.

I've been with Compass mining since June 2021. It was rough at first. Delays relocations, etc. They've turned things around for me and made it right. I've bought some more miners recently and I'm happy with the uptime and customer service. They seem to be continually improving and I'm excited to see where we go from here

My experience with Compass Mining has been very costly and disappointing

My experience with Compass Mining has not just been challenging, but it has been the worst experience I've ever had with a company.

It all started with the loss of my miner in Russia due to the Ukraine war. Losing my equipment was a serious financial setback, and I felt that the situation was poorly handled by the company.

Then came the problems with my second miner, which stopped working in February. I reached out to Compass, and they asked me to pay for repairs. After doing so, the miner only worked for two days in June before stopping again.

What's even more frustrating is that I've been billed and have paid for energy that I never used since my miner wasn't operational. This has only added to the cost and frustration of the entire experience.

But what truly makes this the worst experience is the lack of communication and support. I've submitted multiple support tickets, but they remain unanswered. It's as if I'm being ignored.

In conclusion, my journey with Compass Mining has been an expensive and frustrating ordeal. I've felt neglected and taken advantage of, and I would caution others to think carefully before engaging with this company.

Hey Sorry for your experience, often times this happens when upfront conversations didn't happen-- and expectations were not set properly. I am available via this link to give context and fix problems. That goes for anyone reading this. Thanks.

and for the "I lost money caps" Buying at the top and selling at the bottom because one becomes disphoric towards the position is something that can happen, and that would be losing money. "If you believe what you have is worthless, it will be." I've seen it many times. I've also seen the converse many times as well.

Didn't sell yet? You still have options and losses aren't realized yet. Hey Bitcoin price is low, it can affect your perspective on what your miners and crypto are worth. Not having proper expectations leads to surprises, like this--and will make you feel bad about the position. 99.9% of miners do not understand the math, and thus allow it to warp their perspective--its not their fault, websites like asicminervalue make people think that is how to see things, but it isn't. They consistently see the market backwards when they look at this in terms of "profitability," seeing this in terms of cost of generation leads to an even keeled psychology, understanding what this can do for your taxes is also important and why everyone should talk to a CPA or their local licensed tax professional to fully understand why mining is different than buying on the exchanges. Looking at this through the lense of fiat currency, profitability and also not understanding one's taxes leads to this feeling one has lost money, they sell miners at the bottom and actually lose money.

Yes, downtime happens, yes moves happen, yes machines break, it is important to have that expectation upfront or it becomes a surprise like this. It is also important to know how to get expedient support. Hosting specialized for mining cryptocurrency with a 95% SLA is very different from traditional hosting which usually carries 99.999% uptime.

Much better than what I was expecting

Given all of the negative reviews and press with Compass Mining of late, I was hesitant to proceed with them. However, I have been a client now for three weeks, and the entire experience has been great. Right from the start with my sales associate, Azam, to the on-time installation and followup support everything has gone off without a hitch. I would have no problem purchasing more miners through Compass.

Compass Mining Experience after 1 year

I have been a compass miner customer since June 2022, which is over 1 year at the time of writing this review. I am very happy with compass. They always keep you updated regularly and when I ask a question through the standard ticketing service I always get a response.

I am really grateful to Compass for continuing to take the time to answer customer queries. I have a lot of confidence in their service because I am always reassured that I will have my queries answered even if it isn't always want I hope for. It is always good to know.

They also take the time to give you a full and detailed response and also on the occasions when I've had a complex issue that needed resolving, I have been able to arrange a one to one meeting with my customer service manager who is personally responsible for me as a compass customer, he has been able to meet with me and trouble shoot my issues. Please keep up the fantastic work Compass, and well done!!

Been using their service since 2021.

Been using their service since 2021.
Has always taken long to restart miners. If I log it today, the miner is up in 2 weeks time. Or more likely a month.
Now on to the latest issue. This month I decided to sell, because it's just not worth mining at the price of BTC and the cost of electricity.
So I log a support call to retire and sell the miners. The person tells me sure you need to do that on the site. I'm like cool, ill go to the site. The site says "sorry you cant sell on our site because some other business had issues and they cant do the KYC any longer" so I cant sell my miner on their market. So I log another ticket asking what are my options. They come back to me and say well if you want to retire them then you will have to give ownership of the miners to Compass. So they created a situation where they won't allow me to sell my miners, and the only option left is for Compass to take ownership of the miners. What a happy little coincidence for Compass.

In the beginning, I didn't think they were scammers. But now...STAY AWAY. They going to scam you. It's all fine (except for the extremely slow turnaround time for resetting a miner) until you try to move away or sell your miner.

This company is horrible

This company is horrible. Months late on all deadlines. Machines are never running yet they charge you for the whole electric bill. If you argue it they shutdown your machines until you pay. They also continuously choose bad facilities to host your machines at. Then say they need to move your machines to another facility, where your prices to host increase. Leaving you know option. Then takes months for them to move the machines, so again your machines aren't running. On top of that after them being months late to install machines, then moving them all over for months to bad facilities they then tell me the machine is not working and warranty is expired so i need to pay them more to fix it. If they had installed them on the contract date into a properly vetted facility it would not be broken or have an expired warranty.

Do not respond to support issues but are very quick to ask for monthly hosting bills and will imediatly shut down your machines if they do not receive hosting fees. Weird they can do that so fast.

Horrible horrible horrible. It is not just one rep, it is multiple, they do not get back to you for days with what you ask. I am still waiting for a break down of why 8 out of my 15 miners are not running and why the 8 that due run are so unreliable.

Stay away.

Stay away.
I lost 9 miners to sanctions on Russia (as soon as war in Ukraine started Compass was assuring all is good and fine, even when owners of miners where telling to send miners out of Russia. Compass did nothing till sanctions cane and miners where lost)
i Have 22 miners in Texas 1 facility. Those ones go offline at least once in a day for couple hours. That site just nightmare.
Also bought 5 miners inTexas 4. (They where advertised as new miners) literally 3 days later they go offline and i get email that they will be relocated to Ohio facility. 3 months later they are not online and they need to go to "service/repair". After 3 days of mining?
i have 5 miners in Ontario facility, Those are most stable miners. they actually mine.
To keep it in mind. If you buy miner, they lock you in for 3 (or more) year contract. They will rise hosting prices as they please. And if you want to get out, you will loose your 2 month mining deposits plus you have to pay $200 per miner to be shipped to you.
Overall. Compass mining has been one of my biggest investment mistakes. STAY AWAY

The first three years have been a…

The first three years have been a struggle. I see that many users would agree. Delays with power, gear purchases from China, unscheduled and longer than predicted outages, legal issues... BUT, slowly but certainly they seem to be getting their act together. Something is changing and Compass would in my mind be the last one not to admit that service could have been better. Knowledge and competency at the help desk is improving, same as the response time as well as friendliness. The last miners I purchased went online within 48h and none of them are down. Well done improving the business and hopefully you will be able to manage success (demand) spikes the way you handle it right now!

I wish I could give zero stars. A complete waste of money. DON'T DO IT.

My miners got moved, the cost to run them went up without my approval. I can't get out of the contract. The miners have been down the majority of the time making $1 a day and paying $350 a month to run two miners. And now going to resell these for a massive lost, they've rejected my resell listing when I've been waiting on credits for 3 months.

Btw, on the class action lawsuit side of things, many of our clients are lawyers, CPAs, politicians and global elite....none have felt the need to do that because they tend to understand court is a place people end up when communication stops and the two parties cant resolve the matter on their own. We ultimately are just trying to do good business in an industry where it is easy to get emotionally hijacked when big money is on the line and things are uncertain. Those clients read the emails we send, and they communicate with us efficiently in tickets and calendly meetings. Difficult situations get resolved in a fair way for all parties. Things could be smoother sailing if we align in communication. Hope this helps all.
