We do, however, want to sincerely apologise to you regarding the missed aftercare phone call. Every one of our patients is scheduled to receive a post-operative check-in call within the first couple of days following surgery, so we are genuinely very sorry if that didn’t happen for you. That early contact is an important part of how we support and reassure our patients during recovery, and it’s upsetting for us to think you may have felt that support was missing.

We do hope that if you had any questions or concerns during those early days, Ms Bowers was able to address these and reassure you at your recent suture removal appointment. Your peace of mind during recovery is extremely important to us.

Although feedback like yours is invaluable in helping us reflect and continually improve, we are genuinely concerned to hear this and would very much like the opportunity to review what happened, as this isn’t the standard of aftercare we are committed to providing. Dear Ann,

Apologies for the delayed response but I needed to read your clinical notes and speak with your surgeon Mr Smith prior to addressing your review.Having done so,I feel your review is unfair and I will note the reasons below:

You say you are disappointed with your post operative experience and that no clear explanation or definitive plan to manage a cyst was given .(the cyst or chalzion as it is known ,is due to a blocked oil gland which appeared 4 weeks after surgery in an area beyond the surgical area) and that no 6 week review was received and that we declined to treat you further and advised to seek treatment elsewhere.

It is quite clear from your clinical notes that this is not the case.

4 weeks after surgery, when you developed a cyst on the eyelid of one of your eyes, Mr Smith and another member of staff opened the clinic out of hours to assess your eye and drain the cyst with no cost to you.The cyst settled for a couple of weeks then, as is common with chalzions returned .Chalzions usually resolve in a few weeks or months .This is the only time ever have we encountered such a problem as cyst formation post operatively following thousands of eye surgeries.

Mr Smith saw you again at the clinic and drained it again(this would have been around the time of your 6 week review) .He subsequently referred you to the ophthamology team as trying to coordinate your treatment locally would be difficult for you given your location.

Mr Smith spent hours of his time contacting multiple services local to you arranging an appropriate referral. Eventually a senior nurse at the acute ophthamology unit confirmed that you could attend that same day or the following day. The nurse also stated that this issue is most likely not related to surgery as it was below the operative site. There is literature available to confirm this stating most chalazions occur spontaneously.

Following this visit to the ophthamology team you contacted the clinic to advise that their treatment plan was to observe the cyst and review in 2-3 months.

You requested a second opinion.

Mr Smith therefore contacted a colleague in your area in order to find a recommendation for a ophthalmologist privately.

The clinic and Mr Smith have supported you extensively throughout this post operative period .
There have been an additional 6 consultations and communications with respect to this according to your electronic records.

While we are sorry that this rare complication has understandably affected how you feel about your overall experience I note from your records that the aesthetic outcome of your surgery was very good and the procedure achieved the desired results.

We regret that this situation has been distressing for you and are sorry that you feel disappointed .
Please be assured we have always acted in your best interests, remained available to you at all times and provided care that went over and beyond the usual post operative support.
