From Uncertainty to Confidence & Results

Before joining Data Freelancer, I was feeling isolated and unsure about the decisions I was making after leaving my job over a year ago. I lacked direction, clarity, and the confidence to navigate the independant consulting mode of working. I had no idea if I was pricing correctly, how to approach the right clients in the different geographies, or structuring proposals in a way that would land long-term, well paying work.

Joining Data Freelancer has been a breather. Through the Q&A calls, resources, and support from the community (especially Dave, Hwei, and many others), being surrounded by like-minded people has given me a deep sense of belonging and motivation. I’ve learned how to build proposals with clarity, price and approach projects with true confidence. The mindset shift has been incredible — the confidence has brought about a personality change too. Beyond the career-focused help, I’ve even improved my lifestyle — sleeping better, staying healthier, and becoming more organised making better use of my time.

My best results so far:
- Landed a **$3,000 paid discovery** within 3–4 weeks of joining (at $50/hr). Received my **first official client payment**, which felt like a significant milestone.
- Currently delivering a **$9,000 proof-of-concept** for a major pharmaceutical company, with promising signals for a long-term partnership.

I’m truly grateful for this community — it’s been a life-changing experience. I’m excited about what lies ahead and hope to continue learning, growing, and contributing back.

Week One Review

Just finished my first week of data freelancer. The experience has been very helpful for me by providing a concrete roadmap to follow to become a professional AI engineering freelancer.

Im the type of person who does best breaking a large effort down into small bite sized tasks. Thats exactly what this program does, so for anyone who has a lot of motivation, but doesn't know where to start, this is a great option . I just set up my LLC and am thrilled to get my first client.

Great experience so far, the program boosts motivation

I'm new in the community and I'll probably update my review as I'm discovering it better, but I already enjoy what I got from it.
I joined the program to grow my freelancer career and the content pushes you towards that. Q&A sessions allow you to discuss concrete use cases which is very nice.

Impressive

The program covers all aspects of freelancing, from legal and sales, to tech tools and administrative setup. QA sessions and support from the community are also great! I would to have gone forward with freelancing without it!

Overpriced and Underwhelming: Red Flags Everywhere

I ignored several red flags before joining the Data Freelancer program and eventually left after a month. One major red flag was the lack of transparency about the program's cost on its website. Only during my interview was I informed that the course costs $8,000. I was "fortunate" to receive a discount but still ended up paying over $5,400 (including credit card fees).

The biggest red flag is that the program has a strict no-refund policy and outlines a conditional guarantee making refund almost impossible. A lawyer friend I consulted with about this said their deceptive pricing practices (e.g., not disclosing cost publicly, unreasonable refund policy) may even be unacceptable under EU and Dutch laws.

Another red flag -- they will send you a link to write a review for Trustpilot right after you join the group - before you develop any understanding about the program.

What you actually receive for the amount I paid is astonishingly poor. The primary offering is a six-module online course emphasizing vague mindset shifts and questionable sales tactics. Most people without my background might not even recognize this. Interaction is minimal, mostly limited to an optional two-hour weekly group Zoom call with the founder (which I couldn't attend due to scheduling conflicts), and occasional superficial feedback from inexperienced assigned "coaches." The course content itself is riddled with errors, low-quality materials, and problematic advice—for example, suggesting freelancers say "yes" to every client request and then learn the necessary skills afterward. Completely unacceptable!

I was initially excited about the community aspect of the program, but the members' backgrounds varied so widely that the community ended up offering little value to me.

Ironically, Mr. Ebbelaar shares genuine expertise for free on platforms like YouTube and Skool (Data Alchemy) yet charges exorbitant fees for content on topics where he clearly lacks expertise.

I am not saying that this doesn't benefit some people. But if you look around, you can get a lot more with that amount.

Hey Yousuf,

We were really surprised when we saw this review. We never got a chance to properly address your concerns before you shared this publicly.

When you first mentioned you weren't satisfied, our immediate thought was "let's talk and figure this out." That's why we reached out to schedule a call - Data Freelancer isn't just about the course materials, it's also about the coaching and personalized guidance we provide alongside it.

We have to say, it was disappointing when you declined our offer to chat and instead just removed yourself from our community. We genuinely wanted to understand what wasn't working for you and find a solution together.

About the specific points you raised:

On pricing - We're always upfront about costs during our conversations with potential members, and everything is clearly outlined in the contract you reviewed and signed. We've never hidden these details from prospective members.

Regarding our refund policy - Yes, we do have protective terms in place, and there's a good reason for that. When someone joins, they immediately get access to everything we've built - our strategies, frameworks, code, and tools. But as our many happy members can attest, we're always reasonable when someone approaches us with genuine concerns.

On the program quality - We've helped people from all kinds of backgrounds, including academia like yourself. Our approach is to adapt our coaching to your unique situation as needed - and that's exactly what we wanted to do for you if you were open to that conversation.

Our whole program is built on the idea that we're in this together. That's why we offer our unique guarantee; if you want to succeed, you will. We wish you'd given us that opportunity before posting this review.

The door is still open if you'd like to talk this through. You can reach out directly, and we'll make time to find a solution that works.

All the best,
Team Datalumina

A little over a year ago I was…

A little over a year ago I was floundering in my corporate job, wanting to take advantage of the opportunities in Generative AI but lacked the support and knowhow to focus on this goal. I decided to invest in the Data Freelancer program and immediately began to gain focus on where to put my efforts. I have launched my own AI Sales Prospecting tool and have generated considerable revenue. I couldn't have done it without the support of Dave and the amazing group of people in the Data Freelancer program.

My opinion about Data Freelancer

I joined Data Freelancer after having followed Dave's youtube channel for some time enjoying the mature and interesting content he is providing and his calm and down-to-earth way of presenting his opinions on data science and ai topics. I am glad to have joined Data Freelancer because of the clearly structured learning path and the well presented information that gives me a great guidance in doing first things first and getting more aware of the whole process and what it means and what it takes to become a freelancer. Moreover, the community is stacked with dedicated, very likeable people with all sorts of backgrounds. It is a place of trust and respect.

Positive experience fresh out of the gate

Currently just starting on my data freelancer experience. But straight out of the gate have been confronted with provocative questions that I never considered when thinking about starting a freelancing venture. I love being challenged, so this is perfect.

I have high hopes for the things I will learn as I get more involved over the next weeks and months.
