FRAUDULENT company!!!!!!!!

FRAUDULENT company!!!!!!!!! Without my consent they charged my bank account $36 for a “subscription” that I NEVER signed up for. After realizing the company was a scam, I started digging around and found out many people have been duped by them. I’m working with my bank to get my money back and had to completely cancel my current debit card because they don’t allow you to cancel the recurring charges. I have reported them to the FTC and BBB. It’s very likely the 5 star reviews on this company are bots.

I had the service for a year and found it not very useful. It took me three tries to cancel it and then I got a written confirmation that they had canceled it. A month later they charged my account $36 for another year without my authorization. They are like a bad cold you cannot get rid of.

Terrible company. It is sad and ironic that a service designed to help you avoid paying fees and empower the consumer, makes it literally impossible to cancel your subscription, and continues to bill you even after they themselves have confirmed cancellation. STAY AWAY.

Everything about their website is designed to manipulate you.

I was curious about all these negative reviews, so I spent an hour or so checking out the Do Not Pay website. I found out that there's a reason everyone calls this app a scam and demands a refund. It's because they're being fooled into thinking they're just signing up for a free account instead of what they are actually doing: making a purchase.

The website does everything in its power to manipulate you into paying for a subscription. At no point before signing up do they mention that this is a PAID SERVICE: they hide the fact that it costs $36 a year until you've already made an account and the only thing you will see on their site before that is glowing reviews and amazing claims like "get unlimited free trials" and "sue robocallers for $3000". Their website is also full of fake 'help articles' that are just thinly veiled advertisements for their product, designed to abuse SEO to make sure you see them when you google whatever problem you're having. And, of course, the big bright pink "solve my issue" button in every corner of those articles brings you right to their sign up process.

Most importantly, and this is the reason why people calls it a scam: they disguise the fact that you are buying a product when you sign up. No "review order" screen, no "confirm purchase" button, just "link your credit card!" in big fancy letters and "we'll charge you $36!" in tiny inconspicuous letters. This disclaimer is literally the smallest element of the sign-up page, and they pretend to make it obvious by highlighting the price in pink. The only way they could possibly make it harder to see is by hiding it underneath the giant banner of testimonials at the bottom of the page (which proudly display the logos of reputable news sites as another means of manipulating you.)

All of this, plus the fact that you are FORCED to pay yearly (there is no option for a monthly fee), tells you a lot about how scummy of a company they are: they are literally trying to trick you into paying a significant amount of money for a service you will likely very rarely use over the course of its lifespan. They offer to help you with everything you can think of while at the same time trying to very sneakily rip you off.

While it's ultimately up to you to decide whether or not their services are worth falling for their tricks, my personal suggestion is: do NOT give this company a SINGLE PENNY until they make the disclaimer the BIGGEST THING on the page.

Hello Chloe,
We do provide two disclaimers upon signing up regarding the $36/year subscription that is needed in order to access our services - once on top and another time before a user submits their payment information. Our website also states that it is easy to cancel anytime, and we encourage users to contact support@donotpay.com if they are dissatisfied with our services. All of our articles provide solutions on how to handle issues without using DoNotPay, and we certainly do not force users to pay a yearly fee. Again, users can contact support@donotpay.com at anytime if they have questions or concerns about their account. There are many users who use DoNotPay on a daily and weekly basis, and our team works endlessly to provide new products and improve our services for those who choose to use DoNotPay.

sadly scammed

I wanted to believe in this site, but I cannot. My complaint is, everything you try to do, tells you to upgrade, I just paid. The number one complaint, for me, is that I wanted it for the robocalls and it only allows you 2 card numbers a month, I get about 50 calls a day, so that won't work for me. But, you can't find all that out until after you pay. I feel hoodwinked and want a refund as I canceled within an hour of signing up. It's just not right.

I thought the donotpay service was free…

I thought the donotpay service was free and connected my bank thinking they would help me cancel another subscription. I realized after that I had signed up for their subscription without knowing I did and have yet to see the charge on my bank. The website doesn't make it known that there is a subscription and doesn't cancel it right away and instead gives you the option to cancel a year after. I'd like to solve this problem and to disconnect my bank account.

Money-Grab website/Scam

I decided to try it out and try to refund a game I had purchased and wanted to refund, and the site claimed it could do it, but it can not. On top of it when it had me put in the card info for the website it popped up saying it was going to charge me $0.00 and when I went to my bank account later it charged $36. I tried talking to customer service and they unsurprisingly would not refund it. Do not sign up for this, it is a waste of money.

On the app store

On the app store, this app is listed as free. The first time I tried to use the app, it said: "You agree to CHARGE a $48/year subscription". Not "You agree TO a $48/year charge", apparently I agree to CHARGE them. Such weird phrasing. I clicked on the help button to clarify but it doesn't work. Now it says $36/year. All of this conflicting information is confusing. Who in their right mind would pay $48 just to automatically cancel a free trial? Maybe I'd pay by the month, but not annually. This app is such a disappointment. I hope someone starts a competing app just for free trials, without the sneaky rip-off factor.

I understand the complaints of some…

I understand the complaints of some about the charge - I frankly don't think it's a lot and I read what it clearly told me. BUT...it does tend to have this information in very fine print, on purpose. (Part of the problem is also the name of the service "Do NOT Pay" does imply "free".)

I'm okay with the service for the most part, but many of the features either don't work or they're buggy as all get-out.

Here's what worked.

✅Warranty service. This was awesome - you give it a name, it figures out who the company is. I used it for a pair of clippers that broke and got an email with instructions on where to send it for warranty service. I don't do warranty service frequently, but it's nice not to have to go digging for paperwork.

Here's what didn't work.

⛔ The Virtual Card for trials. Failed multiple times and the tool says it's trying to fix, but it never does. I've yet to see it work. (Having worked in financial, I SUSPECT what's happening is that the card is being reused among multiple customers and it's being flagged/blocked upstream. They gave me three different ones, none worked.)

⛔Spam Collector. While it's easy to send over to it, I don't see it actually doing anything. I tested with four different email accounts, one of which gets literally hundreds of spam emails every day, all the same kind/subject/etc. I don't see any decrease in this number whatsoever. The other boxes didn't really get significant amounts to begin with, but I don't see a notable decrease there either. I SUSPECT that it's only effective with valid email addresses (most spammers spoof).

EDIT: Let me answer this from DoNotPay:
"For spam collector, we demand the spammers to unsubscribe you from their mailing list. If they continue to send you emails, this allows you to generate a demand letter and ask for reimbursements."

The way this works is you're forced to go to the DoNotPay site, go to Spam Collector, and then for EACH spam mail, click "Yes", wait 4 seconds for the button to light up, then click Report, and wait 4 more seconds for it to clear.

I currently have around 7,000 and counting of these.

I WILL NOT sit there doing that excessive clicking on each email.

You need to create a "Report All" that just goes through and just does its thing.

IN a perfect world, your tool would auto-detect that a spam came from the same place and do it for me.

So basically, this tool isn't of any value when you're dealing with thousands of spam mails. It's fine if you're getting one-off spam, but you could do it yourself at that point.

⛔Cash Back on Gift Cards. I tested with two that I have laying around, neither worked. It seems to only work with store gift cards, i.e. Starbucks or whatever, and not Visa/Mastercard/Amex gift cards, which are much more common these days.

There's a lot of services and I haven't navigated all. Some I have no idea if they actually are doing anything - like the raffle entry (manual is free, automated costs money).
