After lots of emails with no response from CS, finally, when I decided to answer and after explaining 5-6 times the same issue (updated motherboard), they just freed one computer so I can work with it; I imagine if using it on my laptop would have to go through all this again!!! NO WAY, prefer to look for another program instead of asking and waiting, like if I'm in a charity. There should be a way to clearly manage your devices as everyone else does in your account.

Hello Mario,

We’re truly sorry to hear about your recent experience. After checking your case, we noticed only one support request was submitted — and once we received the details, your activation issue was resolved within 24 hours.

The good news is that, starting with DxO PureRAW 4, you can now manage your device activations directly from your account — no more need to reach out to support.

If you feel your review no longer reflects the resolved situation, we’d be very grateful if you’d consider updating it: https://www.trustpilot.com/reviews/6970d4801c3c6afb4ceadaff

Thanks again for your feedback — we’re here to support passionate photographers like you.

High quality, high productivity photo processing s/w

I have been using DxO software for processing my images for over 15 years (since it was called OpticsPro 6). We are now 15 versions on at PhotoLab 9 and PL9 is my main raw image processing tool. I also use Film Pack and View Point and the Nik Collection. Over those years, OP/PL has hugely improved the quality of its results and made the UI much more powerful with far better selection tools. It is fast both to use and when it runs. Importantly, when there are issues with the software (it’s big and complex, so there will be!), DxO have been quick to respond and either provide a workaround, implement a fix, or to respond to suggestions for features or improvements.

Activation AND customer support are both broken

I recently bought a new Macbook Pro and I wanted to transfer the "lifetime license" for PhotoLab 5 (3.5 yrs old) to my new Macbook Pro. The software installs. The software runs. I've been using it all evening. HOWEVER, the activation process AND ONLY the activation process does not work.

I reached out to customer support about the issue. The story kept changing, but it ultimately turned into they don't want to support reactivating older versions of their software ... so, they break the activation process to 'encourage' customers to rebuy the software.

Anywhere you find a buy button on their website, you'll see this in close proximity. "Enjoy a lifetime license with no subscriptions or hidden fees." They do NOT stand behind that.

So, please... Be aware of that if you're not planning to spend $200 or more every couple of years to stay current.

Oh, yes! Just for clarification, it is ONLY the activation process that doesn't work. PhotoLab 5 itself still works as expected. This COULD have been resolved another way. But, they chose to break activations... Too bad!

UPDATE 01/18/2026 to DxO's reply :

Inaccurate. "First, DxO PhotoLab 5 is not compatible with macOS Tahoe." The software itself IS compatible. I'm running it just fine in trial mode on his new M4 Pro MBP. I'm running it just fine on two Intel based Macs, an i7 iMac and an i9 MBP. All are on Tahoe.

It is ONLY the activations that are broken. That stair-stepped chart ... that's a CHOICE to break activations.

Look, I'm a software developer. I've sat through enough requirements meetings, sprint plannings, etc. to know when a choice to "not support an older version" is made and this SCREEEEAMS that a choice was made to break Activations.

At the VERY least, update your "lifetime license" verbiage on the buying side to say "Activations supported for 2 yrs, 3 yrs, one major OS upgrade," or whatever criteria you all are using. At least be transparent on the buying side of this, NOT the pdf hidden in support docs.

Had I known up front, I would've either stuck with Adobe's subscription model OR I would've kept looking at other ways to get away from subscriptions. It never crossed my mind that the activation process would be broken for software that actually RUNS ON the OS DxO claims isn't supported.

Update 2 Jan 18, 2026 :
"A lifetime license means there is no subscription and no time limit for the specific version purchased. However, **it has always been tied to the operating systems officially supported by that version at the time of its lifecycle**. This distinction is documented in our release notes and license terms."

Release Notes are not something end-users are going to look for. They're going to click ok on the EULA, too. Those are intentional long and too much legalese. What you described above is hiding that "distinction." I'm asking for better transperancy during the BUYING process. The part I put **'s around above? Add a mouse-over and include that text. :)

I LIKE the software. The SOFTWARE is great! I LOVE that I don't have to setup workbooks or albums and wait for imports and thumbnails to be created. All I'm asking for REALLY (for my situation) is a way to activate the current version that I paid good money for to run on an operating system that it already RUNNING on. Heck, tell me how to move the license file from one computer to another and that'd do me fine.

If this was 10 yrs down the road? I get it. The software is old, ancient, etc. But, when support sends me a link to a PDF someone had to create to "explain" what "lifetime license" means. Wow. That's a lot of work to NOT keep your customers happy. And that's a choice.

"This is a technical limitation of an older licensing architecture, not a decision made by our support team on a case-by-case basis.:"

I never said it was a support team's decision to not support a 3.5 yr old license. I said CHOICES were made. Could be Dev's to reduce what they have to support. Could be the Business side to encourage faster updates. But, choices were made to (from this customer's perspective) deceive customers during the buying process. And that is very disappointing.

"For transparency, we provide detailed explanations of what a lifetime license means in our Help Center, specifically in the “Upgrading & Purchasing” section."

Do you honestly think most people are going to go look in the "help center" to make sure "lifetime license" (a term that most people would be led to believe is flexible and is there to keep them happy) means what they THINK it means? I doubt it.

I appreciate your time. Take care! :)

Hello Michael,

Thank you for taking the time to update your review and for explaining your perspective in detail. We understand why this situation is frustrating, especially when the application itself appears to run correctly.

To clarify an important point for readers:
A lifetime license means there is no subscription and no time limit for the specific version purchased. However, it has always been tied to the operating systems officially supported by that version at the time of its lifecycle. This distinction is documented in our release notes and license terms.

In the case of DxO PhotoLab 5, while the application may launch on newer macOS versions, its legacy activation system is no longer compatible with recent macOS security and system changes. As a result, activation cannot be completed reliably on unsupported operating systems. This is a technical limitation of an older licensing architecture, not a decision made by our support team on a case-by-case basis.

We acknowledge your feedback regarding how this limitation is communicated during the purchasing process. For transparency, we provide detailed explanations of what a lifetime license means in our Help Center, specifically in the “Upgrading & Purchasing” section. Your comments are nevertheless shared internally, as clarity around licensing remains important to us.

We regret that this experience did not meet your expectations and appreciate the time you took to express your concerns in detail.

I can use it for a new camera that is not included in the DXO PhotoLab Elite 6 that I have. That's my reason I like it. It is very complex with the new features that won't apply to my workflow as I'm strictly into Bird and Animal photogrphy.

The best software for you pictures!

I have been using DXO softwares since OpticPro.
Is what you need for converting raws and adjusting your jpegs.
The software will recognize the camera and lense used and will automatically adjust artifacts from your combination.
The raw conversion is the best available in the world, no competitors at the moment for this.
You can add FilmPack and ViewPoint that will add further features for adjusting geometry of the pictures and colors. These softwares when installed are integrated into the Photolab tools or you can use them lonely.
Dxo is the top for me.
Thank you!

Good products, rather inflexible pricing!

DxO software is among the best available, particularly their denoising programs. My real gripe is that, for those of us who have previously invested in DxO products, it would be nice if some kind of discount was available for additional purchases, perhaps somewhere between the upgrade price and the full price.
