I signed up for ElevenLabs because they…

I signed up for ElevenLabs because they advertise 10,000 free credits for new users. Like any normal person, I wanted to test the product before deciding whether it’s worth paying for.

The moment I tried to generate an AI voice, I was blocked with a message saying they cannot offer free credits due to “unusual activity” and that multiple users from my IP tried to claim free subscriptions.

This is simply not true in my case. I had never even heard of ElevenLabs until yesterday, and no one in my household uses AI tools at all. My family doesn’t even know what an AI voice model is. Penalizing a legitimate new user for something they didn’t do is unacceptable.

If you don’t actually want to give free credits, don’t advertise them. This feels misleading and dishonest. Wasting users’ time with signup promises that disappear instantly destroys trust.

A company selling a premium AI product should have better fraud detection, clearer policies, and basic respect for new users. Blocking real users while still promoting “free credits” is a terrible first impression.

I won’t be upgrading, and I wouldn’t recommend this platform to anyone based on this experience.

Avoid this disaster at all costs. The tech support is AI, It will take you weeks to get a cloned voice after several hours emailing back and forth a few dozen times.

For clarity, the typical flow is:

• Upload your voice samples
• Complete the verification steps
• Fine-tuning begins once verification is approved

Timelines to expect:

• Uploading samples: usually a few minutes
• Fine-tuning: usually 6 to 12 hours after verification

I would like to understand if anything else went wrong here so we can identify improvements for our service. Typically, this is where we see some customers struggle for various reasons. Your verification attempts should reset within 24 hours, allowing you to try once again.

USELESS

Bought a plan, because it was the only way to really test this tool out and the results have been shocking!

For something that is meant to be the best in the market, voice cloning has very poor resemblance despite trying with various setups and audio recording lengths - with proper mic + filters!

Also impossible to add pauses or emotions to the speech, nothing works, tried all the documented methods I could fine. WTH? It's bloody useless if this simple thing doesn't work.

What a shitshow

I couldn’t locate a support ticket tied to the information provided here, so I’m working off the details in your message. A few suggestions that should help right away:

• For the highest similarity and overall quality in voice cloning, use the Multilingual v2 model. It’s currently the most reliable for accuracy and likeness. And for the absolute highest accuracy, use a professional voice clone.
• The v3 model is an alpha research preview. It excels at expressive delivery and stronger emotion, but it’s not yet as accurate for voice similarity and does not support Professional Voice Cloning at this time. If you’ve been testing v3 for cloning, that would explain lower resemblance and limitations with fine control. We recommend reserving v3 for experiments and smaller tests until it’s fully released.
• For pauses and emotions, both of these are support but not within the same model unfortunately. The v2 model supports some SSML-style controls such as pauses. The v3 alpha, on the other hand, supports what we call audio tags, which allow you to prompt the AI for a specific delivery. You can read more about both of these in our documentation.

You'll also find best practices in our documentation, which includes model capabilities, useful practices for cloning, and other information. If you haven't already, please feel free to reach out to our support team and share the model you used, the type of clone (Instant vs. Professional), and a brief example of the input text and audio. Just a quick note: during the holidays, our response time is a little bit longer than usual, so it may take a couple of days for the support team to address your ticket. Too many server-side errors and…

Too many server-side errors and glitches. On top of that, the voice occasionally inserts random words that aren’t in my script (I noticed it more when my credits were running low), which forces regenerations that drain credits fast. I also got sour notes/artifacts, and regenerating to correct them changed the sound of my song. Not reliable enough for serious work.

Poor customer Service

I am surprised to see the team from 11labs responding to inquiry in this form, while ignoring actual real tickets for the reason - reduced staff for holidays !! it doesn't make sense.

I have exhausted every other avenue but…

I have exhausted every other avenue but they do not respond. I had built 130,000 credits on my account because I was struggling to use them all. I tried time and time again to contact support with me never getting past bots. I thought without support I would have to cancel my membership until I had used all these credits and what a surprise when I cancelled they immediately took all my credits - avoid avoid avoid unless you want a product that has no support and will take any credits you've built up.

I’m normally a 5-star reviewer. I want products to succeed, and I’m patient when something needs troubleshooting. But this time I’m forced to leave a 1-star review, because despite repeated attempts to contact support, I never got beyond AI-generated replies and never reached a real solution.

My goal was straightforward: I invested over two hours of my own voice recordings to create a reliable voice for audiobooks and social media, so I wouldn’t have to record everything manually every single time. ElevenLabs is widely marketed as one of the best options on the market for voice cloning. That promise is exactly why I paid and invested serious time.

The result has been consistently disappointing. No matter which document I uploaded, no matter how often I adjusted settings, re-generated, and tried again: the output always contained sections where my voice suddenly sounded like I had a heavy cold, then switched again into a completely different persona (sometimes like a “high-German” speaking woman). In reality, my voice is clearly mine, with a Dutch accent and a Swiss tone, because I live in the German-speaking part of Switzerland. The instability and inconsistency make the output unusable for professional audiobook or social media work.

It’s honestly heartbreaking: money invested, a lot of time invested, and the same disappointment every time — with no meaningful support to fix it.

My recommendation: don’t buy this if your main use case is cloning your own voice and you need consistent, reliable results.

• At least 30 minutes of clear audio (2+ hours is ideal for Professional Voice Clones, so what you uploaded should be great)
• Consistent delivery, volume, and tonality throughout (we would need to listen to the specific audio samples you uploaded to ensure consistency)
• A speaking style in your samples that matches how you want the clone to sound (again, we would need to listen to the audio samples to understand this better)

General inconsistencies such as background noise, volume changes, or varying mic distance can create the instability you've experienced.

I imported my manuscript into Elevenlabs to create an audiobook, the programme calculated I would require 175,000 credits to export the whole manuscript, so I upgraded my account and sorted additional credits from the 100,000 I got to allow for the export. During the download it failed, took an additional 200,000 odd credits more and charged me for it, while not completing the download. It then told me I would require over 700,000 credits to finish the export.
When contacting customer service I expressed I received no files, the programme lied to me and I simply either wanted the full download as promised or my money back. Elevenlabs have refused to provide me with either.
At this point, I don't even want the files now, I have cancelled my subscription and just want the refund of $70USD I was charged for a file I NEVER received. This company steals from users, avoid avoid avoid.

EDIT: for clarification Elevenlabs told me the credits downloaded the first 11 chapters. However all it did was download 11 3 second files that read the chapters titles. So again, more lies. I do not want anything from eleven labs other than my money back. And until I see the $70USD in my account, I will be seeking legal advice from a solicitor to take this further with legal action.

"WARNING TO AUTHORS: Annual Plan non-refundable, support is 100% bots."

I paid $250 for an annual plan.

The files are incompatible with ACX/Audible (this warns other customers). ACX specifically states they will not accept AI TTS files.

You requested a refund within the window.

Their support email bounced and their AI chatbot auto-denied my refund. There is no way to reach a human.

STEEP Learning curve to use the tools.

They did give me a partial refund but note that I had to use the product to figure out it didn’t work.

Make sure to read all the fine print!

They turned on my charges without my permission

I have email paper trail asking them to cancel my account. They canceled it and then turned it back on, on their own, and charged me for many months afterwards. Now they won't repay it/refund it after THEY are the ones that turned the subscription back on. I'm filing fraud charges. Oh and btw, their service is not even that amazing. They're one of the most expensive ones out there. Shop even just a little bit and you'll discover this for yourself.

It was later reactivated through a new subscription initiation on the client side; this does not happen automatically. Upon further investigation, we see that you were also issued a refund, which included an exception to our standard policy, as we sympathized with your situation and provided support beyond our usual policies.
