I recently bought a car from Elm Tree Car Sales and found them superb to deal with from start to finish. The team was friendly, professional, and made the whole process straightforward and stress-free. They were honest, helpful, and answered all my questions without any pressure. I’m very pleased with my purchase and would definitely recommend Elm Tree Car Sales to anyone looking for a quality vehicle and excellent customer service.

AVOID!!

AVOID!!! disgraceful. niece got her first car from here february 2025 after passing her test. nothing but issues with it none covered under warranty (battery, alternator, start motor) but in october we finally got told major electrical fault and requires a replacement wiring loom. made complaint as paid over over £1500 in diagnotics and parts because this wire throws up random faults and still car is sat broken unable to start. a further £270 inspection report proving the wiring is faulty when we bought it and they don't make the wiring loom anymore and can't find a garage to replace it after ringing over 40 different garages including citreon itself. this garage don't reply to emails from us or zuto car finance. imz sat with a broken car no one to fix it and these couldn't give a damn. when I rang I was told good luck with proving the fault was there when we bought it. well I have all the documents and evidence that proves it was and will see yous in court. vile company and even worse customer service from the lads working there think they can talk to women like rubbish. stay well clear of this place

Todays update is zuto have today told us elm tree have now stated they havent agreed to take the car back (when recovery to return was booked for 27th may then cancelled same day) and they are seeking legal advice against my niece for the situation of them selling a car that an independent inspection and 3 garages have proved was faulty at the point of sale! No where manufacture the wiring loom that needs replacing which is completely out of anyone's control to fix it so return is the only option.
Niece is still awaiting a call back from connor who said he was calling back next day that was around 3 weeks ago. Tried multiple times to get back to him and now hes unavailble or not in when you ask for him just like they did when zuto was trying to get in touch with them. Whoever answered the phone stated those parts thqt the error codes threw up due to wiring fault were not covered at all under warranty. They can dispute service from the lads but doesnt mean they are right. Multiple times it's happened.

Please avoid this place I purchased a car in May 2024 very quick process but nothing but bother from day one. I should of realised straight away because one window didnt work I should of knew then however i had warning lights and then clunking coming from the bottom of car I got in touch took it back and they couldnt find nothing wrong but the same was happening I had to take it my a family member who is a machanic and said the car should not have been sold and he thinks its been a crashed car there was that many problems to which he even wrote down. I then took it back to elm tree with the list of problems baring in mind these should have picked this up before selling me it. 2nd time a took it back they said they fixed the problem and still to this day i have bother with the car. please avioid they sell broken cars and dont fix any problems. I am stuck with this car and finance but lesson learned I have also warned friends and family not to buy from here

Unfinalised experience with Elm Tree Car Sales

I purchased a Citroën C1 from Elm Tree Car Sales in September 2025. Unfortunately, within one day of purchase, the alternator warning light came on and the car was no longer safe to drive. I immediately exercised my short-term right to reject under the Consumer Rights Act 2015. The dealership stated that a refund would be possible, but they refused to cover the additional costs I had already paid in reliance on the vehicle being roadworthy — including a full tank of petrol, road tax, and a 3- month warranty purchased at the point of sale. Despite my clear requests in writing, I was repeatedly asked to resolve the matter over the phone. I preferred to keep everything documented, but this has slowed the process considerably. After giving the business a fair chance to resolve the issue, I have now had to escalate formally. It is very disappointing to be in this position so soon after buying a car. While I hope Elm Tree Car Sales improves how it handles after-sales issues, I wanted to share my experience so that other customers are aware.

Update: I previously raised concerns about my recent purchase of a Citroën C1 from Elm Tree Car Sales. Since then, I have learned that the warning light I reported was the engine management light rather than the alternator light.

I am now arranging a diagnostic check to confirm the exact nature of the issue before deciding on the next steps.

Elm Tree Car Sales have been in contact and have expressed a willingness to assist. I will update this review once the diagnostic results are known and the matter is fully resolved.

Shocking company - Elmtree Cars GATESHEAD

This review is for Elmtree Cars, METROCENTRE AUTOWORLD, Gateshead.

Bought a car on 3rd August. We've owned it 68 days today. In those 68 days it has:
Been driven by us for 21 days
Been stood at home unused due to holiday and due to multiple 'faults' for 8 days
Spent 39 days back in their 'workshop' for multiple faults - each one we were assured was sorted. Today, the turbo blew, the engine shuddered and stopped dead on a live dual carriageway with my child in the car.

Update: 21/11/22. Our finance company eventually got us every penny back, after the car was returned to Elmtree for a refund. The finance company advised them NOT to fix the vehicle, but produce a report of the faults. This company would not speak to the finance company for 11 days and then told them they had 'fixed the vehicle' and it was ready to collect by us. Finance company refused and advised them they have done what they were not supposed to do and therefore this is considered as TAMPERING. I have this all in writing, alongside text messages between us and this garage, correspondence with the finance company and detailed diaries of all faults and when they happened.

This vehicle has since been resold (December 2022) having seen it back for sale on Autotrader, their website and on Gumtree for over £1k less than we originally paid for it. So if you are the proud new owner of a VW Golf from this place, be VERY VERY AWARE of the ongoing problems this vehicle has.

We've had a reply from the company today, 11/01/23, on another review site, alongside an apology, although this is very half hearted as they claim our comments were 'unjustified' as they pride themselves on their after sales care........ we didn't receive such care, unfortunately. We didn't get a courtesy car until the very last time it was returned for repair, before it died as they claimed they 'didn't have a car available' - so not only were we paying finance, tax, insurance etc on the vehicle, one of us had to pay public transport costs. No explanation of why the car had an extra 1k of miles on the clock from the time that the garage had it and were allegedly looking for the problem. They've claimed they spent a lot of time and effort on trying to fix the vehicle, which in our opinion should've been fixed the first time we returned it, not doing half-hearted attempts at doing so (They sent the DPF off to be professionally cleaned, fair play, but when it was returned the company that cleaned it advised their mechanics that the sensors would more than likely need replaced as they do go once the DPF has been cleaned properly. Instead of just replacing the sensors for peace of mind 'just in case', they advised the above from Driveline. Drove 20 miles home, car went into limp mode again with engine management light & DPF warning light.

The company can claim they 'pride' themselves on whatever they like, just as much as I have the right to write my full truthful experience I had with them, which is what I've written and can be backed up with proof.

Don’t buy from Elm Tree car dealers in Gateshead

Don’t buy from this company unless you want to pay over the top for a car with lots of hidden problems. I also paid for a year’s tax, because they insisted on doing it. They never paid for it and it was six months before I realised I was driving an untaxed car. When I raised it with them, they taxed the car for the remaining six month, using wrong spelling on my surname and I never saw the other six month’s tax money. Really, don’t use these cowboys.
