Essence of the Tree shipped me a clearly diseased Japanese maple tree, and then refused to respond to my multiple emails about it. They claim that they will honor a six-month guarantee on their nursery stock, but that is a lie. (From their website: “Our plants are guaranteed healthy and true to name at the time of shipment...Please notify us within 6 months if your tree fails to thrive and we will either replace your tree or offer you a credit for future purchase.”)

The tree I purchased was sold as a rare, mature specimen. What I received was much shorter than the listed size, looked like nothing more than an unshaped seedling, and was certainly not as old as they claimed (5-7 years). But above all, the tree was obviously diseased. Probably with canker. I held onto the tree for a month while trying to get my money back — through a credit card charge dispute — but when the upper third the the branches turned black, I threw it away. I am still waiting for the dispute to be resolved. The bank told me that the company responded to their enquiry, yet EOTT refused to respond to my emails. So ignoring me was deliberate. I am out more than $200, on this transaction.

I am (was) a longtime customer of Essence of the Tree, and I was a longtime customer of the company’s former incarnation, Mountain Maples.The only explanation I can come up with for why EOTT ignored my emails about the diseased tree is that they knew it was bad stock when they shipped it. That is unbelievably cynical and dishonest.
