The hire car was badly damaged when I picked it up. I didn't expect this much external damage with Europcar. This hire cost €35 per day (we did not buy extra insurance) with unlimited mileage.

Learn from my mistake—don't accept a car with too much pre-existing damage!

I rented from Europcar at Alicante Airport after a long travel day with three flights, including an overnight. I was exhausted and just wanted to get on the road, which, in hindsight, is exactly when you need to slow down.

First of all, the customer service representative were extremely forceful in trying to sell their insurance to every single customer....using scare tactics on how much it could cost out of pocket if something happened. I was already insured but they still pushed it. This slowed down the entire line.

Then, the car they gave me had extensive pre-existing damage, with 34 separate damage notations listed on the rental agreement (3 pages), and was parked very close to a wall in a dimly lit underground garage. No one met me for a walkthrough, so I took a handful of photos I thought most important and left. Given that level of existing damage, it was difficult to confidently identify or document every single individual mark at pickup.

At drop-off, I was charged $80 USD for a scrape on a hubcap that I cannot confirm happened during my rental, especially considering the overall condition of the vehicle at pickup. The hubcap itself already had multiple other visible scratches, which made the charge even more questionable.

I also wasn’t given an invoice at the time and had to follow up later to get documentation.

Lesson learned (and worth sharing): no matter how tired you are, don’t accept a car with that much pre-existing damage, move it into proper lighting, and take a full video before leaving.

It’s a small charge, but avoidable with proper inspection—and something I wish had been handled more clearly at pickup.

Attempted unjustified damage charge – be very careful

I had a very concerning experience with Europcar in Murcia, Spain.

When I picked up the car, there was already visible damage on the front bumper. This damage was clearly recorded in the official vehicle check-out document signed at the time of collection. I also took video and photographs showing the exact same damage before using the vehicle.

I returned the car the same day, and the staff confirmed that everything was in order. However, days later, I received a notification attempting to charge me for that exact same pre-existing damage.

I formally disputed the claim and provided:

the signed contract showing the damage as pre-existing

dated photos and video evidence

full documentation proving there was no new damage

Despite this, Europcar initially insisted there was no prior record of the damage, which directly contradicted their own signed documentation.

Only after repeated complaints and clear evidence did they suddenly close the case as a “gesture of goodwill” — without acknowledging their mistake.

This is extremely concerning. It suggests a pattern where customers may be charged for damages that were already present, relying on the assumption that many will not have sufficient evidence to defend themselves.

In addition, I had to spend significant time, effort, and stress during my vacation dealing with this situation, including preparing formal complaints and contacting consumer protection authorities in Spain.

Final invoice confirms that no additional charges were due, which only reinforces that the original claim was unjustified.

My advice:

Always take detailed photos and videos at pick-up

Carefully check and keep all documentation

Do not rely solely on staff confirmation at return

I cannot recommend this company based on this experience.

Bluesee Grand Cervantes Hotel, Torremolinos

I am sharing my experience to warn other customers, especially those renting electric vehicles.
On the day of rental, before signing the agreement, I explicitly asked whether I needed to recharge the vehicle before return. I was clearly told by the staff member that electric vehicles do not need to be returned fully charged, unlike petrol or diesel cars, where failing to refuel to a full tank would result in an additional charge. Based on this information, I returned the vehicle without recharging.
The rental process itself was smooth and pleasant, with no issues at pick-up or return.
However, after the rental, I discovered that €45.13 had been charged for returning the vehicle with a lower battery level. This was never explained at any point and directly contradicts what I was told at the desk.
When I raised the issue, I was referred to the rental agreement. The problem is that the agreement was only partly in English, while the section concerning additional charges was not, and it even listed figures without any currency units, making it unclear and difficult to understand.
This lack of transparency makes it very difficult for customers to clearly understand what they are agreeing to.

My advice: if you rent an electric vehicle here, make sure all charging conditions and possible fees are clearly confirmed in writing before leaving.

Based on my experience, I would approach this location with caution.

Europcar Rental

By misunderstanding I went to Valencia Airport to pick up my long-term rental car. Unfortunatelly this was the wrong station and I had to drive to Manises and when I arrived it was already just before closing time of 7 pm. Javier the agent at that time understood the problem and made it possible to get my car prepared even there was no order. He had to work even after closing time. That was a very good service I experienced

Left Stranded at Midnight

Left Stranded at Midnight – Avoid Europcar
We were due to collect our car at 21:00 but our flight was delayed to 23:15. We emailed Europcar in advance — twice — and both emails were acknowledged. They confirmed they would stay open until 23:59 if our flight number was on the booking (it was).
They also gave us a number for the airport desk. We called 15 times over an hour — every call was rejected.
We arrived at 23:25 to find the kiosk closed.
We were stranded at a foreign airport at midnight and had to pay significantly more for another rental company. Europcar is now refusing a refund, claiming they weren’t informed of the delay — despite acknowledging our emails.
Completely unacceptable service.

Very bad experience with Europcar.

Very bad experience with Europcar.
The vehicle I booked was not available. Instead a vehicle of superior category was proposed for the same price.
After the renting period I realized my bank account was charged with the upgrading fees I didn't ask for.
Asking company, the answer was the contract I signed was including upgrading (cheked by the employee). Calling Europcar spain, They argue I was late at picking up the vehicle to get the vehicle I booked. No way this is a scam from Europcar company and I strongly recommand to avoid such renting office.

NEVER rent an electric car - beware extortion

NEVER rent an electric car! Scam!
I rented a "Tesla 3 - 600 km LONG RANGE" car.
I was aware I may need to charge it once or twice during our week. When I got there, Europcar said it wasn't available and I could have a Ford Mach-E, which they said was the same category, but only 250 km range, and would never make it to Seville (where we were going that day). They said it would be impossible to use if I was going further than Malaga . They then charged me 250 € to change to a petrol car, doubling the cost of my hire. It felt like extortion, because they offered me an unusable car, not the one I ordered, and then charged me double to obtain the same category car in a petrol version. Regular Europcar customer (5-10 hires per year). Very disappointed with Malaga Europcar.

Europa cars airport Valencia.

Europa cars airport Valencia.
I have never been treated so poorly by customer service in my life. I went abroad with my mother to go on a nice weekend get way to visit family I was disgusted how they spoke down to my mum and acted like she was an illegal alien. Firstly they wouldn’t allow her to rent the car she had already previously paid for and had all the right documents for, by saying she “ doesn’t have an international driving licence”. In addition to saying she needs to be English to drive a car what is absolutely absurd. I can’t tell you more not to drive with this company and don’t go through the tears of being stranded at the airport.

Be very careful

Showed up with auto Europe reservation. I had a idp which if you don't have you will not get a rental. I did not have my passport as the rental document does not indicate it as a requirement. They would not rent the car even with a passport copy. Also they will not accept a photo or a phone image of the rental agreement you must have a paper copy. This is a total scam type operation in my opinion and over restrictive compared to others. An actual hard print passport should be clearly stated in all rental reservation documents as a showstopper requirement.

Europcar

Europcar – Unacceptable Refund Delay

Europcar has failed to process a refund for a correctly cancelled car reservation. More than 50 days have passed, and despite filing a complaint on January 11, I have received no refund and no resolution.

I have been given multiple incident numbers, contradictory explanations, and no clear answers. Customer service is disorganized, unprofessional, and incapable of taking responsibility. Agents provide different information each time and show no interest in resolving the issue.

Keeping a customer’s money for over 50 days is unacceptable. This is a serious failure in both financial handling and customer service.

I strongly advise against using Europcar.

Charged unauthorized services without invoice

After returning the car, they charged us a premium insurance package we didn't ask for, and without providing a corresponding invoice.
We had to contact customer service several times to receive the invoice.
We disputed the invoice, but haven't gotten any feedback for the last 20 days.
Wouldn't recommend Europcar.

I had a terrible experience with Europcar

I had a terrible experience with Europcar in Madrid.

First, even though the car was fully paid through Booking, they gave the vehicle to someone else and charged me an extra €100 for another car.
Second, they only handed me the key without checking the condition together. When I got to the parking lot, the car was covered in scratches -- including a large one on the front.
Third, during the trip, the low-oil warning kept turning on and off. I called to report it, but they told me not to worry and gave no instructions.
Finally, when I returned the car, they tried to charge me €250 for a tiny scratch that was already there.

This company is abusive and dishonest. I've rented cars in many places for travel, and this was by far the worst experience. It's disappointing that Booking still works with Europcar. Next time, I'll make sure to check which company is behind the reservation -- because Europcar cannot be trust

Paid in advance, no car, no refund

Absolutely unacceptable. We had a prepaid booking, got turned away at the counter over “document requirements” and were left with no car. We walked to another rental company right after and got a car immediately with no drama. Then support refused to refund anything - we’re out €500 for a service they didn’t provide. Avoid.

Refused a prepaid Europcar rental…

I was refused a prepaid Europcar rental at Valencia Airport despite attending on time and presenting valid identification and a valid UK driving licence.
At the counter I was told that rentals are not allowed if the passport and driving licence are issued by different countries. No written policy or clause was provided, and the staff member was dismissive and unwilling to help.
After escalating the issue, Europcar confirmed to me in writing that this requirement is not explicitly stated in their Terms & Conditions and that the refusal was based on local operational discretion.
Applying undisclosed rules at the counter and refusing service after payment has been taken is unacceptable and causes unnecessary stress for customers.
While I eventually obtained a refund via the booking platform, the experience itself was poor and avoidable. Europcar needs clearer policies and better staff training, particularly at airport locations.

Unjustified €35 charge – Europcar Dublin Airpoed my Europcar rental car at…

I returned my Europcar rental car at Dublin Airport 30 minutes early and with a full fuel tank.
Despite complying with all rental conditions, I was charged €35 without any explanation.
I have tried to contact Europcar customer service to submit a complaint, but I am told there is a technical error that prevents my claim from being submitted.
Booking reference: CJT-196054257.
Very disappointing experience and lack of transparency.
