FitnessLoft trap/refusal to cancel memebrship under difficult circumstances

I joined Fitnessloft in May 2023 in Cologne. Prior to joining, I asked at the reception if it is possible to cancel the membership in case I move back home or in the case of difficult circumstances. The answer from the employee was YES. She advised me that I can fill in a form and the membership would be cancelled. However, that was not the case.

Soon After, I went through health issues, personal issues where i had to move back to Sweden and I lost my job. In addition, due to these circumstances I was having a really difficult time to mentally manage my life. I asked FitnessLoft to cancel my membership and I explained all my circumstances in details and provided letters from my Doctor and from my place of work where I lost my job. I have also provided them with a proof of address of my home in Sweden. Frankly speaking I have revealed very confidential information about me to a fitness club. Evidently, There are government agencies that I have dealt with in Germany, Sweden and the UK that have not asked for so much info. Instead, FitnessLoft asked me to provide a further documentation from a Specialist, which could lead to them giving me a resting period and extending my contract. Otherwise my contract will still be running until April 2025. This has been going on from July 2023.
I am in the process of submitting a formal complaint to the Verbraucherzentrale NRW e.V. I dont think this company cares about anything but money. I personally will never sign up with FitnessFirst or any of its affiliates, and I shall warn people of their policies and ethics.

At all cost, stay away from FitnessLoft and FitnessFirst as it is the parent company. They mislead you to sign up and they want to trap you for life.

My mistake is i did not check the reviews here as so many seem to have a problem with them.

STAY AWAY

STAY AWAY! YOU CANNOT CANCEL ANY CONTRACT WITH THEM!
It saddens me that I have to give this gym a 1 star review as I genuinely liked it and the people there are friendly. However unless you wish to retire and hold this membership with them for life, DO NOT go to this gym! My nightmare started when I wanted to cancel the contract due to moving away.

After buying a house outside of Bremen in Feb, I directly notified Fitness Loft about this in person that I will move away starting 1st April. I was advised by the team on site that 1) My contract runs out on the 30th Nov 2022, however as moving away from Bremen is a legitimate reason, I will be able to terminate the contract already if I provide a letter which can support the claim of the move and they can cancel this. 2) The only way of cancelling the contract is per email.

I sent an email officially on 23rd Feb, which was followed by a reminder on the 28rd Feb. No reply. On 7th March I sent another email with proof of the address change, no reply.

During this time, I also visited the gym at least twice to talk to the personnel. They gave me always the reply that they have no way of checking the email on site as they have no wifi which is stupid as there is an office! The mailbox is answered really slow as there is a lot of emails! Lastly, there is no way they know when this will be processed but email is still the only way to do so. They advised that I should just keep waiting.

I asked if they can push this with their head office and they said yes, without even taking my details until I reminded them - obviously they did not want to check and my guess is they never did anyhow!

On the 16th June I received a payment reminder per email, which I replied to immediately with all previous emails in attachment. I still received no reply. Last week I received an email with a Mahnung and that this will be passed to Inkasso if not processed.

So in short, I acted according to their staff advise and have multiple times reached out, but they have simply ignored this and continue to chase for payment without any reply. This is absolutely not professional and a complete scam that they are keeping in customers by not replying to any cancellation and not providing any functioning way of cancelling!

FYI, I signed the contract for 24 months end of 2019, so this was apparently automatically renewed in 2021. I paid the full membership fee without complaining even though I did not visit the gym for more than a year due to covid and there was no compensation when they closed down. And now this is how they treat customers!!!

Stay away!!!
