Product details

‘Susanna Clarke’s Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell has always been enchanting and the Folio Society edition feels particularly magical. The Charles Vess illustrations are exquisite and every detail from the slipcase to the endpapers is thoughtful and elegant. This is a treasure.’
  1. Erin Morgenstern
For this unique hybrid of nineteenth-century novel and fantasy adventure Folio have created a lavish edition full of special features and exquisite details. Neil Gaiman revisits his original introduction of the novel with an account of discovering her writing, while legendary fantasy artist Charles Vess summons a whole host of fae delights with 18 colour illustrations, integrated black and white images, an illustrated slipcase and charmingly characterful binding designs. This gorgeous three-volume set also features stunning fold out endpapers, making this an edition that even the famously discriminating bibliophile Mr Norrell would consider among the finest in his collection.  A new age of magic has dawned in the turmoil of the nineteenth century and two practicing magicians stand at its helm. The Raven King’s prophecy foretold of two magicians, but will the two be friends, or rivals? As Mr Norrell and Jonathan Strange find their place in this new world and with each other, the dangerous realm of faerie threatens to encroach on both their lives…

Folio Society’s edition of ‘Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell’ is the best-edited version of the novel available. Whereas Bloomsbury’s 20th Anniversary edition fixed none of the errors in the 2004 text, the F.S. version shows actual editor attention. By my count, about half of the egregious errors have been addressed—not a great ratio, but the best that can be found. The use of Bell to set the text is no more or less appropriate than the use of Baskerville for the Bloomsbury printings, but the correct implementation of ligatures means that the F.S. version is superior on the typographic front too. The only great deficit in the type selection is that Bell scales down poorly, so the novel’s many lengthy footnotes are visually anemic and less fun to read than they could have been. Given the complexity of the text, I would have favored the inclusion of running heads for ease of navigation, but they are absent in all editions.

I hesitated buying this set because of the cost. Now that I have it at home, I see it is worth every cent. This is a gorgeous folio of a fantastic book.

I've been a purchaser of Folio books for more than 30 years. Such a lengthy commitment by a customer fairly shouts satisfaction and contentment. I've purchased many of their books, but the Folio Society printing of Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell has provided me with more than the usual happiness. Presented over three separate volumes, beautifully illustrated and printed, aesthetically exemplary, it is everything I expect from Folio. Of course, the transaction itself unfolded with consummate professionalism. The book arrived quickly, lovingly wrapped with great care. Folio has never disappointed me, and that is a rarity indeed.

Fantastic book (which I knew already); amazing illos. Docked a star for a) no built in bookmarks (a pity at this price in a set of books in a tight slip-case) and b) an ink blemish on one page (see picture) with some bleed-through on the next. With the bookmarks I'd have given it five stars...

Lovely boxset. The novel itself is fantastic of course, but the choice of art and the art style is very fitting (the art on the box itself is gorgeous, as is the fold-out art inside each cover). And I like that they broke it up into three separate volumes -- although I don't mind largish books at all (a la the Game of Throne two volume sets), it's also nice to have some smaller volume sets as well. This is a great addition to my collection.
