While I'm still making my way through it, I find Holland's writing style very easy to follow, as he has a proven knack for taking the events of people and cultures removed from our own by two millennia and bringing out the personal motivations behind the prime movers of their age. Folio have also published 'Greek Fire' by the same author, and I would heartily recommend it for anyone interested in the period which it covers.
