I have purchased all three of Folio's editions of Hilary Mantel's "Wolf Hall" trilogy. Each book is magnificent: the original illustrative art work and the quality of the books' printing and binding. Every Folio volume is a constant pleasure to see, hold, and read.

Well, the banner on the spine is taller than the other two in the trilogy (Wolf Hall and Bring Up The Bodies), and the inconsistency is annoying, especially given that in every other respect, the series is beautifully done. Igor and Marina's illustrations pay subtle and great (and sometimes humourous) homage to Holbein, and if at first the monochrome pencil drawings seem underdone, they soon grow on you (for me, in a big way). Then there's the superb damask like covers and the full gold edging, not forgetting the ribbons, making these feel more like LEs than SEs. There's nothing much more to be said re the content. This trilogy is simply some of the finest historical fiction I've ever read, and despite what became known as 'Mantelgate' on social media due to popular consternation around the banner inconsistency, this FS series is essential.
