The Planets is yet another beautifully and splendidly bound edition from The Folio Society. It is really so superb that the ancient gods (and one goddess) themselves; Jupiter, Mars, Mercury, Venus, Saturn, Neptune, Uranus and Pluto would, if they really existed, declaim along with me this edition's excellence prepared in their honour. These ancient gods, so impressed with such fantastic impressions of their Planetary existence, would even happily deign to offer sacrifices of honour and gratitude to The Folio Society for such book-binding brilliance. How is that for a compliment?

This book is beautiful, and I am proud to own it. That being said, it is more compelling as a visual tour of the solar system than it is as a work of literature. Highly recommend for the right customer. Great for newcomers to astronomy and those interested in stunning imagery. If your interests lie in the technical details of planetary science, perhaps consider other works first.

Yet another book from The Folio Society that doesn’t disappoint on any level. One of my favorite Folio books is A Man on the Moon, The Voyages of the Apollo Astronauts by Andrew Chaikin. This is the perfect companion to that amazing story, and I love that the books have the same dimensions. Both authors of The Planets make the text welcoming and informative without drowning the reader in textbook style, bland data. The photographs are incredible with lovely two color print and informative diagrams throughout. The Sun on the slipcase gives way to Saturn on the cover which is further enhanced by the deep blue page edges. Thrilled with my purchase once again.

I already have a fantastic library of folio books. Friends tell me that I am addicted to the beautiful volumes. I can only admit to them that as long as I can afford them I am going to continue to buy them.

Images are very handsome, with generous “bleeding” full-page colours. I only wish that the text had been a bit more informative, with current research on evolution of our solar system, quite distinctive, discussions of how atmospheres developed and changed and implications, etc.; more challenging for the reader.
