Very poor customer service with an undelivered online order

Ordered online and parcel passed to DPDM, but the parcel has been held in their York depot for 5 days with no explanation. DPD told me to contact the sender. I emailed them asking them to sort it out. They have failed to do this and have not replied to my last three emails. Very poor customer service, I still do not know what is happening to the order. Will not be using them again.Situation seems to have been resolved, with the item due to be delivered on Monday

Appalling service

So at the end of a walking holiday recognised boots were at the end of their useful life. Looked around the store and picked a boot up. Could not see any assistant to find the size. Then noticed someone arranging shoes. Walked up to her and made a pleasant comment to be ignored for about 5 minutes. The lady never turned round to acknowledge a customer. She then LIED to me that the manufacturer did not make half sizes. Tried to sell me a boot that was TOO BIG. I'm sorry madam but sometimes size does matter. Safe to say no purchase made.

Rang store to be told I could use a gift card I had recieced from go outdoors after traveling over 60 miles to store a couple of days later, and finding product to purchase was told I couldn't use it. Also sale assistant who served me at the till thought I could use it until other member of staff stated I couldn't lack of training and communication. Won't be going back plenty of stores in town with similar gear and better customer service

Charged for a bag

Fishers are the only place in Keswick that we found sold Zamberlan boots.Salesman was good, bought the boots but must admit being a bit miffed to be charged 50p for a bag after paying £240 for them.

When I get marketing emails from Tiso…

When I get marketing emails from Tiso and George Fisher pushing Montane, a brand I love, at the same time with the same content in the same format, I realise I should look into them. Then I see they are both owned by JD Sports who owns Go Outdoors, Blacks and a bunch of other low quality outdoor gear brands. No thanks. I would rather buy from decent companies. U subscribed from both. Bye.

Great online experience

Before making a purchase online I emailed the shop in Keswick with a query. Helen answered really quickly and gave me some great information. I made my purchase and it arrived really quickly. I would definitely shop online with them again.

THANKS TO NONG AT BATH BRANCH

Went into shop looking for a reasonably priced waterproof and wind proof jacket. Had excellent service from a lovely lovely lady called Nong who found different makes and types of jackets to try on which was greatly appreciated as I’m an older male who is not that good at finding what I want amongst a mass of choice. Ended up buying a lined waterproof and wind proof jacket + fleece + a lightweight waterproof and wind proof jacket for summer use. All on offer at reasonable prices well pleased

Gone downhill

Been a GF customer for 30+ years and still call in a couple of times a month, albeit mainly for the excellent (independently run) coffee shop on the top floor.

The store itself is an attractive and well laid out space with good range of items, mainly from premium brands. However service and, to some extent, pricing, are where things start to go wrong.

In pretty much every other outdoors store I visit in the Lakes, staff are warm, chatty and eager to offer advice, but too many GF staff just look as though they’d rather be elsewhere and make little if any effort to engage unless approached. Overall, service feels mechanical and staff look generally bored/fed up.

Price-wise, premium products are always going to be costly, so I’ll usually shop around for big ticket items and almost always find a better deal in one of the many local competitors. Even during sales, the reduced items seem to be very limited and reductions are rarely more than 10-20%.

Maybe GF’s more of a tourist destination nowadays, happy to make its money from visitors keen to buy some kit during their holiday, and less bothered about service and value? Certainly, for anyone living locally, there are plenty of stores that seem to pay more attention to generating repeat customers.

First rate top quality service

We went in to try on some walking boots.

It was evident from the start that the sales assistant Jayne was very skilled at her job and was much more interested in finding a good fit (and understanding my feet) than selling us a pair of shoes.

We spent 30-45 minutes there and were well impressed. I would thoroughly recommend her and the store for top class personal service.

So sad to see a decline in service for this once great shop

I first shopped at GF in the 1980s and it always used to be a treat, No longer, I bought a pair of Scarpa Walking boots and the stitching failed within the 2 year Scarpa guarantee period, but apparently GF have their own policy which they say overrides the Manufactures policy so even though I cannot possibly travel from S East England to Keswick to try on a replacement they refuse to give a refund so will chance a replacement even though individual pairs differ a bit. (I see from another review that GF are no longer the independent company that they used to be, in the past when the service was a joy.) I won't be shopping there again I'm sad to say I've had better service with on-line purchases.

Poor customer service

Bought a pair of walking boots from George Fisher in Keswick August 2023
They developed a split on the top of the shoe (not sole or toe) called in on Saturday June 8th to ask if they were still under guarantee:the reply was “it depends on the fault”
Explained the fault, the assistant looked at the sole of the boot and said “you have walked a lot in these“
Yes they are a walking boot
Then put her hand inside the boot and said that the toe membrane was worn and this would void the guarantee

Asked how you wear the toe membrane reply “long toenails (which I don’t have)
Conclusion: dont buy walking boots if you intend to walk in them and have long toe nails
I’m sure they should have lasted more than 8 months
George Fisher used to be an independent store with a good reputation for clothing and after sales, but since being part of JD Sports it’s reputation and service as deteriorated

In the Harrogate branch today

In the Harrogate branch today. Above a pile of Berghaus fleeces there was a sign 20% off fleeces.

Picked up 2 and went to the till. However computer said NO!

Pointed out 20% off sign to till guy and he said he would call the manager.

Sounds hopeful but later tells me he is calling the manager to remove the sign not to resolve my problem!

Hence 1 star!

Thanks to Harrogate branch

Spent an hour in the Harrogate branch buying replacement boots. I had excellent service, the charming good natured assistant (Tom I think) was patient and really helpful. Thank you. Would not hesitate to recommend this store.

My partner and I went to the shop in…

My partner and I went to the shop in Keswick looking for a waterproof jacket for me. We entered around 4:50pm. (there isn’t a sign on the door to indicate what is the closing time) There we’re quite a few clients inside the shop.
We looked around for the waterproof and the shop attendant was ignoring us for at least 10 min. But when finally she decided to talk to us, it was to tell us that the shop was closed!!
What’s that supposed to mean? Does that mean « just get out of here now? «  And she said it in a curt tone…it’s confusing. I entered when it was open which for me means I am welcome as a client and suddenly just a few minutes after I am kicked out! Very rude. I will not go back to this shop again despite having spent hundreds of pounds there in the last few years.

What a difference - it’s all about attitude!

What a difference! I needed to purchase to waterproof hiking coat. Found one that looked perfect and went to the the till. The label was marked £140 but when I got to the till I was told they had mislabelled the item and it was £210! Reluctantly I made the purchase but asked if, as it had been mislabelled, the shop would meet me half way at £170. Refused.

Blow me down, a couple of days later I walked past Needle Sports in Keswick and saw the waterproof I was ideally looking for, in the window, at a price of £159.99. Still smarting from the George Fisher Experience I decided to buy it. When I got to the till I was told that the item was showing in their IT system at £270. With no fuss at all, the helpful member of staff said that they would honour the label and agreed to sell at the labelled price.

What a stark difference. So, I came away from our latest trip with two great waterproof hiking coats but very different experiences. Guess where I’ll be visiting next time?!

I have never felt so unwelcome in a shop in my life. I went into the store on Friday 3rd June (AM) and asked to try on a couple of pairs of shoes. The man who served me claimed that my dog tried to knock him over, she didn’t, her paws never left the ground, no doubt there is CCTC George Fisher you can check this out for yourselves. Anyway he backed away from us as if we had the plague. I don’t know the name of the person but he was white, male, about 60 and said he had dogs himself. After speaking to a colleague he apparently has a history of upsetting customers but nothing seems to be done about it. I left the shop without trying on the shoes and went elsewhere. I’m a regular in the store and have bought a lot of goods there in the past, however, I will think twice about entering the store in future given the disrespectful service I received.

More than I bargained for

I ordered some boots for my partner
They arrived, but sadly inside the sealed bag so did a mystery red powdered dye!

This is a genuine review more to advise other prospective buyers that the company is refusing to take responsibility for this, and they have told me to take legal action via my home insurance
They feel it is not their responsibility, but that of the courier which they contracted to deliver the parcel - madness!

When I first reported this, I would have accepted a cleaning contribution, as my sofa now has a slight pink tinge to it after much gentle cleaning (crushed velvet material)

It took around 2 weeks to even get a response on the issue from the company,
Phone calls and emails unanswered until chased down

You wouldn’t think that you need to consider unwelcome additions inside a sealed parcel, when opening it

I’m mortified about the stain, but so very disappointed that the company will take no responsibility for it and insist it’s the couriers fault.

So, sadly I will be taking legal action in order to hold them to account

In my experience there are more deserving companies out there who will fulfil your order, but more importantly not leave you out in the cold should a problem arise

Pictures and emails are fully available to back all of this up
