Readmission refusal

–> BACKGROUND

I was a resident at Glenview Terrace because of a severe balance problem.

–> NEUROLOGY APPOINTMENT

While living there, I had an appointment with an outside neurologist. During that appointment, he told me something devastating that he found in my medical record — something previous doctors had never told me. He also discovered that my blood pressure was extremely low and sent me directly to the hospital.

–> HOSPITAL EVALUATION

At the hospital, a doctor evaluating me asked about my mood. Because of the news I had just received, I told her I was feeling depressed. She concluded that I might be suicidal and admitted me to the psychiatric ward. I told her I was not suicidal — just temporarily very upset by the diagnosis — but I was admitted anyway.

–> REFUSAL OF READMISSION

Near the end of my hospital stay, I was told that Glenview Terrace would not allow me to return. The explanation given to the hospital was that they did not have the staff or facilities to care for me. I still do not understand why that would be the case, since I had never harmed anyone, threatened anyone, or engaged in self-harm.

–> TRANSFER TO ANOTHER FACILITY

As a result, I had to move to a different facility.

–> ATTEMPTS TO CONTACT ADMINISTRATION

I later tried to contact the administrator, Rafael Zimmerman, to ask why Glenview Terrace refused to readmit me. I called many times and left multiple voicemails but never received a response.

–> CONDITIONS AFTER TRANSFER

The facility I was transferred to did not appear to have greater resources. In fact, my situation was worse in some ways because I no longer had access to a therapist for many months after the transfer. I was also separated from the residents and staff relationships I had built at Glenview Terrace, which mattered to me because I have limited support outside the facility.

–> MISSING BELONGINGS

When my belongings were packed and sent to my new location, several items were missing, including an electric toothbrush that was important to me on a limited budget. I left additional voicemails asking about it but never received a response or replacement.

–> OVERALL ASSESSMENT

Based on my experience, I cannot recommend Glenview Terrace.

Bad ending at Glenview Terrace

My time at Glenview Terrace ended in a way that I still do not fully understand, and that experience is the reason for this review.

I was living there because of a serious balance disorder. While I was a resident, I went to see an outside neurologist. During that appointment he discovered two concerning issues: first, something significant in my medical record that previous doctors had never told me about, and second, that my blood pressure was extremely low. Because of the blood pressure issue he sent me straight to the hospital.

While I was being evaluated at the hospital, a doctor asked about my mood. I had just received upsetting medical news and said that I felt depressed. The doctor interpreted that as a possible suicide risk and admitted me to the psychiatric ward. I explained that I was not suicidal and was simply reacting to what I had just been told, but I was admitted anyway.

Later in that hospital stay I was informed that Glenview Terrace would not allow me to return. The hospital told me the facility said they did not have the staffing or resources to care for me. That explanation was confusing to me because I had never threatened anyone, harmed anyone, or engaged in self-harm.

Because I could not go back, I had to move to another facility.

I tried repeatedly to contact the administrator, R***** Z********, to ask why I was not being readmitted. I left many voicemail messages but never received a call back.

The move itself created additional problems. The new facility did not appear to offer more resources than Glenview Terrace, and in some respects my situation became worse. For example, I did not have access to a therapist for several months after the transfer. I also lost the relationships I had developed with staff and other residents, which was difficult for me because my support system outside the facility is limited.

When my belongings were packed and sent to the new location, some items did not arrive. One was an electric toothbrush that mattered to me because of my limited finances. I again left messages asking about it but never received a response or replacement.

For these reasons, my experience with Glenview Terrace was negative and I cannot recommend the facility.
