We booked deluxe room for our 50 th wedding anniversary. We arrived on the gate and gatekeeper wished us happy anniversary which brought smile to our face. The concierge took charge of our luggage and car with speed and efficiency. Reception team invited us to welcome drink and tea was exceptional. We were shown to our room. We were also given upgrade options which we declined. When we reached our room the luggage was already there. I headed to the outside heated swimming pool and vast jacuzzi set at temperature not seen in other 5 star hotels. Loved the vast sauna and steam room and complimentary sparkling water. We were surprised to find champagne bottle and lovely card in the room for our anniversary complimented by drinks in the fridge and crisps of high standard. Wherever we went all staff were so welcoming and nothing was too much for them. Greetings from the face of all staff made our stay special. The dinner in restaurant 88 was good. Breakfast was discerning and deliciously exceptional. No doubt this is a proper small leading hotel of the world. Start to finish exceptional including water bottle lying in the car for onward journey. Faultless and Flawless.

Left disappointed again

This is the second time I’ve stayed at Grantley Hall and left disappointed. The first time we booked and ate at Shaun Rankin restaurant. I was asked to change my footwear, as apparently some of
The guests found them offensive despite them being a very expensive pair of designer trainers and a dark colour. When I explained that I didn’t have any other shoes apart from another pair of trainers with me, I was asked again to change them. We went around in circles several times and I even offered to take them off and sit in just my socks or to leave and not eat but these were also declined. In the end they agreed I could stay wearing my offensive shoes. Very strange and poor.

Last night we stayed again. This will be the last time, as we ate in the Asian restaurant and made it clear that I have a garlic intolerance at the time of booking. This was also acknowledged upon arrival. Pretty much every dish was packed with garlic and subsequently I was able to eat very little. They did knock our drinks off the bill as way of an apology, but that hardly covered the fact I left the restaurant hungry and extremely disappointed.

Upon check out today we were asked about our stay and I explained again my poor experience to which they issued a further 50% off the bill for the meal. Why wasn’t this done the night before? And I also still don’t think that it makes up for what should have been one of the main highlights of our stay to be so poor.

We also had an issue with our room upon check in and were unable to get in due to the keys not working. I returned to reception and had to stand waiting for about 10 minutes whilst staff just walked past and no acknowledgement at all whilst the one staff member on reception dealt with another customer.

When I was finally seen to I was escorted back to my room with a member of staff to make sure I was opening the door correctly which I found amazingly condescending given all that was required was to put a plastic key on a pad on the room door.

I find the hotel very pretentious and although the staff are good, they are quite over bearing at times. We were asked on no fewer than 6 occasions this morning how our stay was and our room etc etc which is way over the top.

Breakfast was also bizarre with my wife ordering granola with yogurt and berries, which was on the menu, only to be presented with a huge bowl of dry granola with not even milk to pour on let alone yogurt and berries. I ordered sausage and fried eggs and when they came the eggs were garnished with a green raw herb, why??? It just spoilt the eggs.

Overall another disappointing stay and I certainly will not be returning when places like Rockcliffe Hall and Seaham Hall offer better facilities and service without the pretentious atmosphere and at better value.
