Giving one star is too much If I could give zero it would be more accurate. Was sent a letter stating that I owed over £700 due to interest in my savings but no detailed explanation. When I tried thei... See more

My wife and I sent in identical letters…
My wife and I sent in identical letters to ask for a reduction in 'up front tax" for tax on interest received. We explained that we had a large interest receipt due to a 2 bonds maturing in the same year which will not be repeated. I have had a reduction although they have also stated tax will be taken via my tax code ? ? What is that all about. My wife's reply, although our investment is a joint account, was that her request c.ould not be granted as she had to fill in a form. The form was missing and the spelling in the letter was poor. The inspector ,for example does not know the difference between "to" and "too " You can imagine the scene where a manager asks " have you found that easy job for my son yet? " When asked what his educational qualifications are you can imagine the reply to be "what has that got to do with anything " The HMRC service is a joke.
Why isn’t there anything done about the…
Why isn’t there anything done about the worse service I have ever experienced in my life. This time the phone just went dead twice before having the slightest chance of taking to someone, and now if you want to complain you have to wait until October.
You couldn’t make it up!!!
Appalling service
Appalling service
- 5 x hung up on ("System errors" - I wasnt rude)
- 6 x letters sent (that I didnt ask for to an address I cant access right now)
- 1 x emails received (sent another letter)
- 0 x call backs
Approved for my VAT registration. Waited 15 days for the letter to come through. Wife is greek so went to visiting her family for a month. No access to the business address
Contacted them for the VAT reference number for an invoice. They cant provide this over the phone or in an email to the businesses email address.
Find out 1 specific team can help. Email them - they sent a letter. No number for team and takes the 4 business days to respond.
This is not a service, it is a roundabout of nonsense conversations with unhelpful people. They WFH 3/4 days per week and couldn't give a monkeys about your problems.
Very disappointed - can understand why everyone is leaving the UK
Apalling customer service
Apalling customer service. Took some money from my pension April 2025, completed P53 reclaim forms same day. June 23 letter asking for bank details for my rebate, sent these same day. Now chased 4 times, twice told I would be informed of the situation within 48hr, not a single call. Complained and 2 weeks later not even assigned to anybody. Rang again today to be told payment is being processed, should be a few days. Seven weeks to process a payment after the real work has been done. Apalling service, just not interested in customers, typical civil service.
Why can't I email you?
Why can't I email you? Your a public servant but service is distinctly lacking. It would help if you got proper software engineers to write your systems rather than a bunch of overpaid monkeys from whichever consultancy are ripping you off this year.
HMRC - Norbert's 5 star service
I normally have someone do my tax return for me. This year I was unable to reach her so I decided to do a self-assessment return.
@Norbert was the person who assisted me, and when our call dropped he called me back promptly, and because he called me back I didn't get the opportunity to complete the survey.
What a knowledgeable, respectful, thoughtful, courteous and professional gentleman. He listened, considered my query, gave great guidance and didn't make me feel rushed at all. Thank you and well done Norbert.
Extremely helpful
I’ve been in contact with HMRC regarding Class 2 insurance contributions towards my pension. They were incredibly helpful through every step of the way, saved me money and gave me tips on the best times to phone - I got through straight away every time. On the last phone call when all was sorted the man was so kind I was moved to tears. Could I give a special mention to Stephen. I think it’s important to give a good review for good service otherwise it looks overwhelmingly negative. This is not the case in my experience.
Not even worth the 1 star
Not even worth the 1 star, absolute joke trying to contact them. Just keep getting sent links not relevant to the query! When I did get through the advisor sounded like a masticating cow chewing on her dinner so unprofessional and uninterested. Disgraceful service and so incompetent!
While I wanted to give Harriet a 5*…
While I wanted to give Harriet a 5* rating I did have to wait for 47 minutes to speak to someone which is dreadful. Harriet, when I did get through, was helpful, friendly and did her job - all I ask from HMRC. I believe that she is an asset, keeping her excellent customer service going even when her system froze twice during the process. I had called due to receiving a letter from another HMRC employee which made no sense at all to either of us so we agreed to ignore that and start again. In the end I am delighted and relieved to say that Harriet and I got there!
Criminals
You can’t even get anyone on the phone. The system is designed to get rid of you by sending a text. I’ve filed my tax return and due to a fault on HMRC’s part they are sending me threatening letters, even though I’ve appealed. They are clearly scamming people out of money and couldn’t organise their way out of a paper bag.
These people are a complete waste of…
These people are a complete waste of time hmrc should stop using unskilled people to work at the tax office they are obviously stressed out because they are under pressure to do a job the don't have the qualifications for.
They were SO helpful
I am going to buck the trend here because I think people only leave reviews when they have had a bad experience?.
I have now had to deal with HMRC 3 times recently for a death in the family and also my e bay income.
On all 3 occasions they have gone above and beyond and have been amazing.
Phone answered very quickly and e mails replied to quickly.
Special thanks to Robert and Daniel.
Hmrc should be abolished!!!
Absolutely useless!!! Stuck in a loop with these idiots and they won't help!!!
I'm trying to log in to my government gateway id thing to sort my tax assessment out and I don't have my old phone number and as I said I'm stuck in a loop. Can't ever get through to any one.... I got through once before and they said they'd sorted it and send me a letter with new details... guess what letter never arrived... honestly they drive me insane!! But they're quick enough to come after you for money. Disgusting service, should be abolished!!! Hate this stupid system!!!
Shocking Incompetence and Zero Accountability from HMRC
My issue with HMRC has been ongoing for over 8 months with no resolution and no one taking responsibility. I had to escalate the matter to my MP and even write to the First Permanent Secretary and Chief Executive just to get a response — and the issue is still not resolved.
HMRC seems to be run by people who can only follow rigid desktop procedures with no ability to think critically or take ownership. They don’t accept emails, and any letters sent are rerouted through a Royal Mail depot in the Midlands to be scanned and forwarded, which delays everything further.
Despite submitting an online complaint, I’m still waiting for it to be acknowledged. It’s ironic how quickly HMRC chases the public for money, yet when they make mistakes, they move at a glacial pace. Absolutely disgraceful.
Shocking service quick enough to want…
Shocking service quick enough to want there money . And fine you for late returns yet do not rush when it comes to owing you money!
Wasting the time of people working to pay tax
Terrible wating time, awful automated system. No one to talk to.
Hmrc are a joke
Hmrc are a joke, roll on the day when it's a thing in the past.
These mfs are robbing us all blind. I have 2,687.00 available for refund, These mfs are holding onto it, they are thieves in high places.
HMRC: 10 Years, No Job, No Refund – Just Lies and Excuses
Was owed an £800 tax refund. HMRC refused it, claiming I didn’t submit a tax return in 2015 — nearly 10 years ago — even though I didn’t even work that year. No job, no income, nothing to declare. What exactly was I meant to file — a blank sheet?
Now they’re axing fuel allowances for disabled people while MPs swan around with multiple homes, chauffeurs, and gold-plated pensions. There are more disabled people being born than ever, yet the help’s vanishing — but the luxury perks for politicians just keep growing.
This system isn’t broken. It’s bent. Bent as a nine bob note. HMRC and the government are running a legal scam with a straight face.

This is the worst service i have ever come across ,I held on for 23 mins then call was ended .If i could have given half a star i feel that is sufficient. It is impossible to get through to .This is one department where customer services is non existent an absolutely disgrace service
