Saga cancelled my holiday via a poorly written email with no follow up information about rebooking or refunds, 8 days and several phone calls to assorted departments laterI am still waiting for the refund as I certainly won't be booking again.
Spoke to a representative to book a holiday. My call was dealt with in a friendly and professional way. The gentleman answered all of my questions and explained the booking process as we went through each stage. Thank you Saga 😊
Helpful sales person and not a machine. Everything was explained and questions answered.
If you are about to book a cruise with Saga – read this first!:
We recently returned from the Spirit of the Danube (24 July sailing), a premium holiday that cost us over £8,000 of our hard-earned retirement savings. While we want to state upfront that the onboard restaurant, bar, reception, and housekeeping staff deserve five stars for their incredible hard work under miserable conditions, Saga’s corporate management deserves zero stars for calculated customer deception and gross operational negligence.
Saga possessed definitive operational data by 22 July confirming the Danube had hit a 30-year low and emailed us to let us know that we would no longer be sailing from Regensburg but would be embarking at Vilshofen instead due to low water levels. We immediately emailed Saga raising concerns and asking for their contingency plans in the event of further disruption due to low water levels. Saga replied but completely omitted any operational plans, hiding the reality from us. Rather than acting with professional diligence and giving us our statutory right to cancel for a full refund before leaving the UK, Saga chose to recklessly gamble our holiday on speculative weather models to protect their peak booking revenue - especially as they proudly announced on night one that the ship was carrying a record-breaking number of passengers.
To compound this, on our departure day (24 July), a major ship collision severely damaged and gridlocked the Freudenau lock corridor in Vienna. Saga’s 24/7 operations team should have known about this immediately and we should have been informed on our arrival at the arrival airport, instead, they actively chose to remain silent and trap a maximum-capacity ship of paying customers aboard a doomed vessel. Did they deliberately omit this vital information because they were already fully aware that our cruise would end permanently in Vienna due to the low water levels?
From day one, our premium cruise was downgraded into a chaotic, logistically failed bus tour. We were subjected to unacceptable "either/or" choices at Passau, were completely stripped of our scheduled visit to Esztergom, and our highly anticipated 10-hour capital city itinerary in Bratislava was slashed to a rushed, stressful 2 hours and 15 minutes due to exhausting road coach transits that completely ruined our excursion.
Worse still, Saga completely abandoned the final four nights of the cruise, 50% of our holiday leaving us stranded in an industrial dock in Vienna. For 90% of this time, our ship was "rafted" side-by-side with a competing vessel. Our premium floor-to-ceiling windows were blocked, plunging our cabin into total darkness with zero natural daylight or basic privacy. We were forced to live with our curtains permanently drawn, trapped in a claustrophobic environment that was made physically unbearable when a pervasive, foul sewage odour began to permeate our cabin from the surrounding stagnant waters. Because our windows were blocked, we could not even open our balcony doors for fresh air.
Overall we had approximately 9 hours of daylight cruising.
The final insult was our return travel. Saga altered our scheduled daytime flight from Budapest to an exhausting 20:20 late-night departure from Vienna. As an older couple, being subjected to a gruelling transit schedule that did not drop us at our front door until 01:20 in the morning represents a complete and absolute failure of Saga's duty of care.
When we formally complained, we received Saga’s attempted mass damage-limitation sweep, sending a generic automated template email with an insultingly low 10% blanket cash offer to every single passenger on the ship. We did not receive any response from them that acknowledged our individual complaint or suffering. We accepted their 10% refund strictly as an interim partial payment only.
Their Head of Guest Experience issued a letter claiming these water levels were "not expected" a demonstrable factual falsehood given their own port changes on 22 July. While rival lines like Riviera Travel acted with complete transparency on the Rhine, offering their guests the upfront choice to cancel with 100% full refunds, Saga is now desperately trying to buy us off with a Future Cruise voucher of 10% to trap even more of our hard saved cash!
We have rejected their generic platitudes. We are demanding our full statutory price reduction under the UK Package Travel Regulations, and we will be taking Saga directly to formal ABTA Arbitration (Membership No: Y1741) on 1 September. Do not trust this company. They totally lack respect for their customers and care about your money, not your well-being.
Holiday booked online very easily. As a nervous flyer it is important to be able to book seats prior to the date. Previous experience proved impossible with Titan even though it is the same company so will not use their booking again.
BA were incredibly difficult to contact or get any help from and then we were lucky enough to speak to Bill at Saga. It took 30 minutes of painstaking laptop searching and resetting to get there but Bill had the time and care to help us finally get into the correct area of the BA site.
Only gave 4 stars as the previous 2 calls handlers were not as helpful but Bill is a real Customer Services hero. Thank you.
Brilliant service from a very friendly and knowledgeable Chandan. He knew what he was talking about and guided us throughout the booking process as well as giving us advice.

After several attempts at trying to book a holiday to Europe and one to Ireland, all of which were not only booked out, but Saga would not insure me for health reasons. However, I persisted, found alternative insurance cover and finally booked a hotel stay in Malta. All the staff were very sympathetic and helpful throughout, particularly Graham who made the final booking, Saga, here I come for the third time round with you!
One of your newer female representatives, Harries, talked very knowledgeably when booking my Magic of the Nile cruise and was extremely helpful and courteous.
