Support ignores tickets and does not respond.

Hostodo changed the location of the servers from Miami to Tampa a year ago. Since that time, we have had connectivity problems and the server is disconnected and must be restarted to respond again, only 3-5mb of bandwidth and other failures on the server.

For more than 24 hours the server is down, no connectivity. Nobody in Hostodo responds. We have services there that need to be online, this is causing us a lot of difficulties and losses.

Just a few days ago they charged us for the year of service, but they don't give any answer to the failure.

Downtime, downtime and downtime

Since I've signed up with them, I've had nothing but downtime after downtime after downtime. No server load, no response from staff for hours on end. Just nothing.

They don't even monitor their own networks, quite literally.

Great value VPS

Great value VPS provider, i've almost had no issues during 3 years partnership. For all this time IIRC there were 2 big network outages with my VPS being down on the network. The second problem/issue is that avx2 CPU instruction set is still not available in 2021, a week ago i've requested brand new VPS to test it. Support from hostodo is great and overall price/quality ration is decent, can recommend this provider.

Hostodo and RackNerd

I've reviewed about a dozen VPS hosts in the past two weeks. Only two so far are both a bargain and actually work, taking quality of Support into account.

The two hosts at the top are presently Hostodo and RackNerd. I'd recommend them over DigitalOcean for some types of projects.

Support is the key element. OVH Cloud, for example, is slow to respond to tickets. LA-VPS essentially doesn't respond; I'm still waiting for full setup 8 days into the process. Hostwinds has excellent Tech Support but terrible Billing Support.

Hostodo and RackNerd, like most low-end box hosts, have limited staff, but every issue that I raised was addressed. Both on the technical side and in regard to billing issues.

Beyond Support, Hostodo offers rDNS in the control panel, rebuilds of boxes are simple and fast, and KVM and NVMe are supported.

RackNerd requires a ticket to set up rDNS, in some cases, but says that rDNS is in the control panel depending on the network involved. KVM is supported.

I haven't done network speed tests, but speed seems to be acceptable in both cases.

I've tried Squid and Mail In A Box on boxes at both hosts and am posting this, in fact, using Squid running on a Hostodo box.

The Hostodo box has just 1 CPU and 1 GB of RAM but works fine.

Installation of M.I.A.B. was slower in that configuration than usual, but both Squid and M.I.A.B. seem to be running well subsequently. In fact, CPU usage right now is at a sedate 4% and RAM usage is under 400 MB.

Page loads, by way of Squid on Hostodo, seem noticeably snappier than usual; I don't have much experience with NVMe, so I don't know if that makes a difference in this context or not.

For those who'd like to duplicate the browsing speed that I've mentioned, I recommend Chromium with uBlock Origin added. Avoid versions of Chrome that don't support the latter add-on.

On the VPS side at Hostodo, I've turned off IPV6 due to rDNS for IPV6 not being supported yet.

For Mail In A Box (which I'm using) to work, this means that two additional tweaks are required: configure "nsd" to run IPV4-only and make the "nsd" config file immutable.

On a Mail In A Box VPS, DNS is handled by "nsd". On general purpose boxes, for maximum speed, you may wish to run "dnsmasq" with DNS cache enabled as opposed to using either default or Google DNS.

For distros, I recommend Ubuntu 18.04 for M.I.A.B. VPSes and Debian 10 for general-purpose boxes. If a host just has Debian 9, an in-place upgrade is fairly simple.

Pretty Nice

If your Ubuntu 18 VPS hit a connection lost ,
try
mv /etc/network/if-pre-up.d/iptables /etc/network/if-up.d
It might be a problem with the mirror .

My VPS server is down too often

My VPS server is down 1-2 times per month and every time i have to open same ticket to make it work. Restart from the control panel doesn't work.
Last ticket I wrote 3 days ago still have no answer.
You shouldn't waste your time using their VPS, not sure about other plans.

Hello Vitaliy,

Reviewing your account, your service was hosted on a problematic OpenVZ node in Miami. We are deprecating our OpenVZ services and have offered you to move to a KVM VPS on our more stable platform. We will give you this upgrade for free. Please contact us and we will make sure you are taken care of.

I can assure you that our servers are stable, our control panel works, and the service is fast.

Thanks,
Hassan

It's a pity that there is no combination of small machines and high bandwidth? Because there is such a demand.

Our smaller NVMe KVM plans have a pretty good amount of bandwidth, starting at 3TB: https://hostodo.com/nvme-kvm
