Welcome to House of Hobbies. We are a small business selling model railway, scale model and RC kits plus all the accessories, paints and tools you need to create your miniature worlds. We stock all of the normal UK brands and try to specialize in the European and US brands too so if you after something for your model railroad or a new addition to your fleet of kits then please do come inside and take a look. **We hit a huge growth patch late in 2023 which caused issues with our service levels and we are working hard to implement changes to prevent them happening again. Better to be honest and own the mistake than hide away** Please do look at our reviews both good and bad and remember that less than 5% of happy customers actually leave reviews but we certainly do make mistakes and naturally get flagged on here for them. I guess we are saying look at the bigger picture and remember that none of us get up of a morning actively wanting to upset our customers. Thanks and welcome to the family. Martin

(updated after response) I'm very sorry to hear that the company has problems from their reply on here, but I'd really like a refund or to receive the products I paid for. I run my own small business and I've been hit with illness etc too at times, but please resolve this. I needed the product for an event. I haven't received replies to my email, only the response to my review. it was about £50 worth of goods. I see now that others have had the same problem.. I'll give it one more week and then raise it with PayPal for a refund.
Missed the Paypal refund as I was ill and still haven't received the order.. it's end of June.. and they answered review with a sad note but I'd just like to get my order or I guess I need to go to small claims.

Failure to communicate
Despite three emails and attempts to ring House of Hobbies, my order has not been completed. I have had no contact to explain why. The money for the order was taken 5 weeks ago. The item I ordered was available to order at the time of my order and I had an email to confirm that the order was accepted. Then nothing.

Only half of my order ever turned up, and that was over 2 months late. Ive given up with the rest.
Emails and phone messages were never answered. Its like the lottery with this company and like dealing with a dodgy company on the internet on the other side of the world.

Ordered on 4th April and item shown as in stock so expected quick delivery. Even now I have not recieved the items and no reply to atleast 8 emails and phone calls never answered. Now seeking money back via my bank. Very very poor never again!
Update 26/5/24
The copy and paste response to every negative review is hollow. Never any response to many many phone calls/emails. It was only when my bank chased a refund that I got an email. I asked for a refund (9th May), you stated it had been done there and then, it never was. It does not matter what the situation you cannot take people's money, never deliver, say you have refunded but never do. Its dishonest and no way to run a buisness!

Great...but slow…
The governor is clearly passionate about his company...and when I explained his website was difficult he explained his enormous, and ever increasing stock made an ongoing challenge to his ongoing effort to simplify, I did and do understand.
He's always had almost everything I need in the Peco line, and was kind enough to give me twice what I ordered for the original price.
However I recently ordered 4 items showing as in stock and am yet to hear they're dispatched, whereas a single item from Rails of Sheffield arrived the next day.
I feel a dilemma as I genuinely approve House...but since their acquisition of Hattons , Sheffield are also in a commanding position...and their stuff arrives promptly, though they use Royal mail too?

Goods took 3 weeks to arrive
Goods took 3 weeks to arrive. Phone calls and e-mails not answered. It wasn't until I opened a case with Paypal that goods were dispatched very quickly. Thought I had been scammed for £200. Seems if you want your goods, open a Paypal case. Goods were OK though when they arrived.

Product apparently in stock
Product apparently in stock. Not delivered despite saying 2-3 day delivery. No response to emails. Cannot phone. Sent 4 emails. Waited over 2 weeks. Abysmal. It’s no good offering lowest price by not being able to fulfill. Why don’t you respond to people? We are your customers… perhaps I should say we were your Customers?!

Broken product and no after sales service!
I ordered a Bachmann scenics coach washing plant. It arrived in its box inside a plastic mail bag - no paperwork at all. I opened it to find it cleanly broken into two pieces.
I did get a response to my email enclosing photos, admitting the damage was probably at their end and offering a 5% discount (£2.12) if I glued it together myself, or they would replace it.
Having received no response to 3 emails I sent over a period on 4 weeks requesting a replacement I will have to settle for repairing an item I paid full price for.
This is the first experience with House of Hobbies and it will be my last!
Would not recommend.

Orders not fulfilled
I first purchased a low value item from House of Hobbies in January this year (2024). It was slow to arrive but they did fulfil the order. Based on that, tempted by their lower prices and not being in a particular hurry to receive the goods, I placed a higher value order for 2 items shown on the website as ‘Available’ (“dispatch is usually 7-14 days”) 24th March and a second order on 8th April for an item marked as ‘In Stock’ (“dispatch is usually 2-3 days”).
To date, 24th April, neither have been delivered and there has been no notification of dispatch or any other communication since the confirmations of the order receipt.
I emailed House of Hobbies over a week ago, on 15th April, requesting a status update on these orders and have received no reply to that or a follow up email 2 days later. I have called many times in the last 10 days and either get an answering machine with no option to leave a message or an engaged tone. In summary I have received no communication from HoH since placing the orders.
A Companies House search on House of Hobbies brings up some troubling details:
- House of Hobbies Ltd was incorporated in October 2022 reusing the name of a company of the same name dissolved in April 2021
- Prior to forming HoH, the director of the current House of Hobbies has been a director of 4 other companies in a similar business area, between 2015 and 2020, all short lived, with 3 being dissolved and one liquidated, plus a ‘consultancy’ with no declared business sector, incorporated in 2011 and dissolved 2 years later. None of his businesses have lasted more than 3 years.
A number of TrustPilot reviews have described similar experiences to mine and in some cases have received feedback from HoH claiming they have been suffering from staff sickness and recruitment problems since the start of 2024.
I suspect the images on the website of a neatly laid out shop are bogus, as a Google Streetview of the business address shows a small unit on a small industrial estate. A phone call this morning to one of the neighbouring units confirmed that someone has been working in House of Hobbies this week, yet nobody has picked up the phone on any of the 19 times I have called, or answered my two emails.
The whole setup feels bogus and despite the large markup made by most retailers on kits, at the discounted prices charged by HoH, the business model seems unsustainable.
Currently I’m £100 down and am about to contact my bank to try and recover the money. I may well report HoH to Trading Standards.
My advice to anyone thinking of placing an order with HoH would be to use one of the many other reliable, albeit more expensive, dealers.

No goods and zero communication
Ordered some paint that never arrived , once it was overdue I emailed for an update - no reply ! You can’t ring these people and they ignore emails. In the end , after many attempts at contact I had to get a refund using the protection offered by my bank . Appalling and best avoided.

GOODS NOT DISPATCHED
I placed an order for 2 OO gauge Warwell wagons at £66.31 on 1st April 2024. As at 23rd April 2024 I have not received the items. The web account order status shows that the items have NOT BEEN DISPATCHED YET. There is also a note on the web page stating that the seller does not answer the phone. I have sent two emails, both have been ignored. I am left with no option other than to seek a full refund. I can't justify even One Star but there is no option for Zero or Minus Stars.

Avoid at all costs
My order said ‘Available’ and delivery 7-14 days! Well it has been 21 days today and after God knows how many phone calls over the last seven days and two emails both ignored I am giving up and getting a refund from PayPal £31.51, I have found both items I ordered elsewhere luckily. I would avoid this company at all costs because they do not deserve customers I mean what time does it take to send a quick email letting people know what’s happening.

Non Existent Customer Service or Refund
Avoid these people. I ordered some items, got 75% of them and have had requests for either a refund or the last item of the order, and all I have had back is silence. I am now going to take this company through the small claims court to get my money back, plus the 8% interest, plus the cost of making the application. What a way to run a company and waste peoples time while keeping their money.

Ordered from them 3 weeks ago
The website said orders would be dispatched in 2-3 days. After no replies to my emails my order was dispatched after 3 weeks. The item was as described and reasonably priced. The lack of communication and long wait is the reason for two stars.

Took Money for something they had no intention of providing!!
Ordered 3 off 250ml bottles of Seuthe smoke oil from House of Hobbies, paid the money, then nothing from them for about 3 weeks. Contacted them via email, which bounced back, tried phoning, no response, in the end got my money back through Pay Pal. Think it is very poor that a company cannot respond to say not in stock, and just take your money. Thank you Pay Pal. I would suggest that you shy away from this company, they are more hassle than they are worth.
