You Have To Pay To Use InterNations In Any Meaningful Way

I signed up for a free account, and almost immediately got a message purportedly from someone welcoming me as a newcomer to a city I'd lived in for over 40 years. I went to reply to that message but couldn't, instead I got a popup saying to choose a paid subscription in order to reply.

If you want to actually take part in this community you need to pay. Yes, they have a free option but it does not allow you to use any fundamental features of the InterNations site. You can find the same community free of charge elsewhere online, InterNations is purely for the money.

I went to delete my InterNations account, but instead of deletion I received a popup that said I had logged out. So I again tried to delete and got another popup saying my account was "temporarily suspended" due to "breaching their guidelines". I read the guidelines and came nowhere near breaching any of them. I didn't even engage in any way with anyone in my brief attempt at using the InterNations site.

So I contacted InterNations and asked that my account be deleted, but they just told me to log in and delete it from there. I told them I could not log in, just kept getting the "temporarily suspended" popup. No reply.

My information remains on their servers and they have been unwilling to work with me to ensure that my account has actually been deleted. This has been the worst experience, out of many, in deleting my account from a website.

Not to be missed!!! Become a member of InterNations!

I've been a member of InterNations for a few years now. Since 2019 to be precise. And I've also been a Consul of a group from 2021 till present, organising events. It's been a lovely and helpful way to get to know an awful lot of new people who have then become friends and with whom I've shared hundreds of nice moments: from aperitifs, to visiting exhibitions, to going to the theatre or to the cinema, up to hiking in the mountains, going to the seaside and also spending weekends and holidays together. So, what to ask for more...
If you're into languages like me - I teach languages to professionals, managers, businessmen, companies, etc. - that's a wonderful opportunity to keep them trained since you get to know people from all over the world. Which is something special in itself since you get to know first hand about other cultures, ways of living, and so on.
I'd definitely recommend to become part of the community. They organise so many things and there are so many different groups all over the world. So while travelling, if you're all alone, you can always rely on one of the events there are up somewhere.

My experience with both the organizers…

I’ve had a fantastic experience with Internations. The local organizers here in Beijing are great, and the customer service is top-notch. It is rare to feel so taken seriously by support teams, and their responses were incredibly quick.

Long-Term Ambassador Experience – Member Complaints, Volunteer Pressure, and Community Collapse

I was involved with InterNations Copenhagen for over 12 years as an Ambassador, during which time the local community grew substantially. I organised numerous events and invested significant unpaid time and personal effort into building the community.

During those years, I repeatedly heard direct complaints from members who felt frustrated by how difficult it was to unsubscribe or cancel their memberships. Many expressed that they felt disappointed or “ripped off” by the process. These concerns were raised informally and repeatedly at events and in conversations with Ambassadors, yet they did not appear to be meaningfully addressed.

At the same time, Ambassadors were consistently pushed to create more and more events, often with expectations around hosting, organising venues, and providing a welcoming experience — sometimes at personal cost. When concerns were raised about sustainability, support, or burnout, those concerns were not taken seriously.

My own involvement ended following an internal process that I experienced as opaque and lacking transparency. I requested clarification and access to information under GDPR, but was told that decisions were final and supporting details could not be shared. I am not seeking reinstatement; I am documenting my experience.

I am also aware of other Ambassadors who left after similar frustrations, and at the time of writing, InterNations Copenhagen lists no official events at all. Readers can draw their own conclusions about what happens when long-standing volunteers disengage and community concerns go unaddressed.

My intention is to warn others — especially those considering Ambassador roles or long-term paid memberships — to research carefully and understand how member issues and volunteer concerns are handled.

Communities rely on trust, transparency, and people willing to give their time. When those break down, the calendar speaks for itself.

In relation to GDPR, our team provided you with a copy of the personal data we had stored in 2024, as per your request. While we understand your concerns around transparency, some internal reports must be handled confidentially to protect the safety and privacy of those involved. This means we cannot share copies of reports, the identity of the reporters, or internal materials that could compromise the privacy or safety of others.

We’d also like to clarify that there are upcoming activities planned for the Copenhagen community. Communities naturally evolve, and we continue working to support them in a sustainable way.

Declined for signing up for the app. What kind of elite, cocky, pretentious company is this? Just wanted to sign up for the site and got an email that it was declined. I'm based in Singapore but seeing all the reviews, you did me a service. It seems downhill and there are many other ways to meet people now. Thanks internations.

scam - do not sign up

Some events might actually be organised in your locations, but the organisation itself is clearly a scam. They misuse your financial information (e.g. PayPal) by deducting money even after you have ended your membership.

Discriminatory attitude from ambassador

Some events are not for everyone apparently, the same ambassador Savraj Singh which I reported, sent me some very unpleasent discriminatory messages in private (even after kindly asked him to stop texting me), stalking me and assuming among the things that I am not nor I won't be in Munich, that I have been living in too many countries (can check the private messages) I and that surely I won't come.
Is this discriminatory, close-minded and rude attitude what you promote with Internations and your ambassadors in Munich?... Speechless

Hit or miss and quite expensive for the little you get. I have been a member for years but the Albatross membership level (interesting hame and reflects the difficulty turning it off) cost has doubled in the last few years. The group events are not that interesting from my experience and one member I connected with was trying to sell me products which I think should be against policy since the idea is not to become a sales target. They should lower their price for the paid membership.

I enjoy the opportunity to connect

I enjoy the diversity of the events and the numerous social opportunities to form online friendships and keep networking. However, I do realize this may be out of scope for the event organizers, at times, I feel a room for improvement at the online social events could be to include some conflict management with follow-up, to keep to the guidelines of respectful conduct, and to provide an opportunity for long-term acquaintances to connect freely as well as others to fuly take part in the events. I have not attended many in-person events, but I believe they provide a frequent opportunity to meet and socialize.

Subscription Trap with deceitful tactics

InterNations uses all the common deceitful tactics on subscription renewal
I was not notified when the renewal was going to take place
I was not given any time to decide
When I tried to cancel the renewal, I was not able to select the same day, I could only select a date that was 1 month in the future so that InterNations could charge me for 1 more month at least.
These common traps are illegal in many countries and should be avoided.
I received a bill for the one month, I contacted internations explaining, however the person replying does not appear to be familiar with customer protection laws against these types of traps and continue to insist that I owe for this month. Although the monetary value of one month is not huge, it is the principal and the financial scam that are at main concern. I recommend against leaving your credit card information with this company as they will try to at least squeeze out one more month of payment despite the customer protection policies by NOT allowing the cancellation date to be the date that you select to prevent renewal/cancel but rather a month ahead

InterNations a wonderful community for expats around the world

InterNations is an excellent platform for anyone living abroad or planning to move to a new country. It provides a welcoming and well-organized community where you can connect with like-minded people, attend local events, and get practical advice about life in your new city.

Can do nothing...Waste of time to sign up when you dont pay.

The actual score tells almost all about this site:
I Signed up.
And its more than disappointing. You can not add friends, you can not answer messages. You can do nothing when you don't pay. And the amount they charge is way to high for a website like this if you pay monthly. 13.00 USD. Who want sign up 1 year when not sure what is the site exactly about and does it match the needs.
They could at least do some free credits per month. And add contacts should be anyways free. When its like this it looks a lot like a money machine. I understand they want make money. But let people subscribe and then they can not do anything, makes no sense. Then better straightforward "pay by registration". That is more honest.
There are a lot other websites out there, free and same in the final result.
