Extremely disappointing and felt completely misled
We paid £312 for what we were told would be a detailed survey, full cost breakdown, and clear explanation of the works required for bamboo removal.
The reality was very different.
The survey itself lasted around 15–20 minutes, and within roughly 2 hours we received a quote for over £15,000. We were repeatedly told during booking that we were “very far away” and had to be booked into a specific morning slot because of distance. Looking back, it genuinely feels like the job was priced so high that we would never accept it, while the company still secured an easy £312 survey fee.
What shocked us most was that over £10,000 of the quote was for labour for three workers over two days. We repeatedly asked for a proper explanation or justification for this figure and never received a meaningful answer. Instead, we got vague references to “complexity” and changing explanations.
At one stage we were even told part of the price reflected the possibility that we might need to use the guarantee in future due to regrowth. We actually had to explain that this is not how a guarantee works. You do not charge customers more because they may need to use a guarantee later. If anything, that only raises concerns about confidence in the work being carried out.
We were also promised a full breakdown of costs and a step-by-step explanation of the works, both in the booklet provided and verbally. Neither was given initially. We had to repeatedly chase for even a basic breakdown, requiring significant time and effort on our side just to obtain information we had already been told would be included.
Once the breakdown finally came through, it became obvious why it took so much chasing, particularly when the labour alone exceeded £10,000 with no real justification.
The surveyor himself advised our case was “not the best he’s seen, but far from the worst.” So imagine our confusion when we later saw the company publicly stating that £3,000–£6,000 is their usual range for excavation works, yet our “far from the worst” job somehow came back at £15,000.
To make matters worse, the explanations kept changing. We were first told the survey fee was a standalone fixed cost, then later told it covered travel time. When we questioned this and asked whether someone living further away would therefore pay more, the question was simply avoided.
After a long back-and-forth and a formal complaint, we requested a refund given the poor experience, lack of transparency, and unrealistic quote. This was refused.
Between the lack of transparency, changing explanations, failure to provide what was promised, and a quote that felt wildly disproportionate, we have been left feeling completely disappointed.
Proceed with caution and get multiple quotes before spending money on a survey.
