Purchased an expensive cashmere sweater which quickly began to have little balls of cashmere after very little wear. I can no longer wear it out of the house. Very expensive mistake.

Enjoyed a very interesting and informative factory tour at Elgin. Our guide, Carol, was engaging, very knowledgeable and pleasant company. She patiently led us through the many processes involved in turning raw materials into fine goods.

Always wonderful experience. The quality of the products is exceptional, the softness of the yarn, the colour combinations are incredible.
The orders are always dispatched fast, the shipping is express air and free of charge. I never had a need to return anything, but recently I had to send back a cardigan with a small snag on it, and the replacement was handled the most effectively by the customer service. It happened during DHL strike, so I was informed that I’d have to wait until the strike was over, but I was also reassured that the replacement cardigan was reserved for me and offered a discount. The moment the strike was over I received a return label, the replacement was sent to me the same day my return reached Johnstons of Elgin. I’ve just received the cardigan, and it’s perfect.
Thank you very much for the great experience every time!

Purchased an expensive V-Neck cashmere sweater in December. A few months later, there is a lot of piling on the cashmere and it looks very worn. Very disappointed in the poor quality.
I got a pair of Thinsulate gloves as a gift. Kept them for 15 years until they finally wore out. I bought a pair of $50 cashmere gloves from Johnstons in October 2020. They looked nice, but as of Jan 2025, they have huge holes in them. I had to buy new gloves. Ugh.
Excellent cashmere clothes. I've got several cashmere shawl jumpers, a cashmere bomber. The weaving is fantastic and weight of fabric.
Visited Johnstons of Elgin Sale today bought a cashmere crew neck jumper. Sale sticker reads “OFFER PRICE £95. Peeled off the label to reveal the original price which was £95!!!
Not really a Sale after all.
Johnstons used to have a reputation for quality and Sale bargains however this is clearly sharp practice.
I’ve kept the label as proof if Johnstons wish to comment.
It is very sad. The quality of the Johnstons of Elgin product has really diminished. The quality was once superb and I would mostly buy their products on sale. They were worth every penny. You could tell from quality and packaging it was truly luxury. I started to see a change around 2018. I made purchases that started to seriously pill. The pieces quickly lost the fine cashmere look. I have a lot of their products and now a purchase seems to be hit or miss, and there is obvious corner cutting. For instance, a classic cashmere cardigan with no ribbon behind the buttons. When I contacted the company, they tried defending it, until I laid it all out. Luxury cashmere is supposed to last for many years, if not forever and they are investment pieces. I have so bought so much cashmere over the years and that which I bought years ago, is still beautiful and looks better than at least half of what I purchased in recent years. I think they are counting on younger customers who don't know what luxury products are supposed to be and probably don't care. High quality cashmere/wool isn't supposed to show its wear. What prompted me to write this post today? The last stole I purchased in 2021. I wore it this morning and it doesn't get a lot of wear. I bought it for the unique color, which JofE is known for. Only after a few wears, you can see the yarn starting to pile up before it pills. It is no longer has the smooth beautiful finish. The shawl was over $400.00. The beauty of that new piece should last a long time. To the company's credit, they did respond with an offer to make up for what I have experienced. That was appropriate and deserved, but what I am most wishing, is for JofE to keep their standards high, so I can truly be a happy lifelong customer. I hope they revert back, but that isn't the way things usually work. Even recently, I checked the website and a patterned sweater was not properly aligned. Shocking. That is what you find in low-end stores with subpar quality clothing. I guess JofE is finding customers who know nothing about how clothing should be made and don't care.
We booked in for a 1hr 1200 o clock tour followed by a light lunch.
Johnston garments are extremely expensive however after learning the integrate processes involved from sourcing the Cashmere wool, to the finished product which is processed having gone through more than 50 people, rigorous quality control which is so well respected that customers such as Burberry don’t even have to QC their products.
As a local who “bides” in Elgin, I was really impressed and educated into this local wonder.
For lunch we had a soup of the day with a club sandwich and coffee to wrap up our visit.
Thoroughly impressed and I warm heartily recommend this to anyone unfamiliar with this historical process . The food and the cafe may well come across as expensive but yet again high quality prevails and won’t disappoint.
Special thanks to our Tour Guide with Italian roots and South African accent.
Thanks for a pleasant afternoon visit.
when I wanted help with an item, the young, female members of staff were stood in a cluster with a male member of staff (manager?). They were laughing and giggling and talking about an "old" member of staff. I didn't bother to interrupt them. Around the corner saw another lady whom I asked for help and she was kindness itself, even showed me a matching scarf which was in the sale. I mentioned the attitude of the other staff and what I had heard and she just said "oh dear", but her eyes were filling up., so I am guessing it was about her. I tell you, she was lovely and helpful and as an older person myself, I would rather deal with a person like her, than young flibbertigibbets who stand around. I am not impressed with Johnstons if this is how they treat their staff.

Food was very nice in restaurant (as always), and the staff there were great.
Very expensive jumpers, cardigans and hoodies...
What a wonderful Company. I have purchased many quality items from Johnstons of Elgin, but this was the first time online. I bought a beautiful wool dress and I have to say the Customer service from the Ecommerce team couldn't have been better. A wonderful dress and a great shopping experience.
Thank you.
beautiful cafe and shop, must see if you're in elgin
Beautiful products of very high quailty.
You get what you pay for
Classic Round Neck Cashmere Jumper bought for 359 EUR from a trusted retailer some weeks ago, after wearing it for maybe 15—20 days looks like a cheap sub par jumper after 2 years. The cuffs are all going baggy. The wool is going fuzzy and starting to form little lumps. Expensive disapointment. I hope I get my money back.
As I’ve only ever purchased in-store when visiting Elgin I can only comment on the staff and quality of goods themselves.
Staff are super polite and welcoming whilst the knitwear is truly world class in terms of fit, comfort and durability.
Along with William Lockie of Hawick the Johnston’s brand truly earns the right to proudly state ‘Made in Scotland’.
Ive bought many items of cashmere clothing from Johnstons of Elgin over the last year. The cashmere is the highest quality that Ive found that it wears very well over time. The shipping service they use is very fast and reliable. Highly recommend
Great customer service and shipping. Some of the best quality clothing in the world. As the world tries to buy more sustainably, these are the types of pieces that you can keep for generations if properly cared for.
Refunds take one month. I have three pending. Emails are responded very slowly. Phone is not answered at all. Incompetent customer service and unprofessional attitude. Initiating a charge back with my bank.
Will never order again and inform my circle.
Congratulations. You have lost thousands of dollars.
