Absolutely avoid if possible, their service was highly unreliable. We booked an automatic transmission car months in advance only to find out on the spot that none were available, with no notification ahead.

Their proposed solution was that we find an alternative on our own at the competing neighboring car rental services (of course none were available last minute during weekend) or rent a manual transmission car at a higher price.

Having no other options to stick to our travel plans, we had to agree, resulting in uncomfortable situations in the busy streets of Rome. There is absolutely no space to refresh your manual driving skills. During pickup we noticed a foul vomit smell in the back seat which we complained about to which the staff only replied "car wash". When returning the car in ZTL zones, make sure the staff registers your car otherwise you risk a high fine.

Whenever I travel in Italy, I always choose Locauto. That's why I decided to rent from Locauto again this time in Rome.

The rental office is conveniently located near Borghese Park, so I chose it to rent a car. When we arrived, a woman named Stefania was very nice, friendly, and explained everything while quickly sorting out the paperwork.

When we went to get the car, we met an employee named Simone, who was polite and very calm.

After packing our suitcases into the car, the saddest experience I've ever had with a Locauto rental began. After turning on the car, we tried to connect to Apple CarPlay so we could leave the center of Rome more easily — but it didn’t work and wouldn’t connect.

We called Simone for help, and he also tried but said it wasn’t working and wasn’t sure why. He offered to give us another car, mentioning there was a Jeep available at the same price level, but I wasn’t sure if the navigation would work in it.

I called Stefania and asked if she could exchange the car or upgrade us for an extra fee, and she said she couldn’t help because no cars were available, and suggested we get navigation for a few euros a day. We weren't satisfied, but that wasn't the worst part.

We then went back to Simone and asked to switch to a Jeep. He tried to set it up so Google Maps would work — and luckily, it did. However, as we got closer to the car, a terrible smell spread through it. We asked if smoking was allowed in Locauto cars. Again, the answer was calm but unhelpful — “I don't know!”.

We had no choice but to take the car that reeked of cigarettes and endure the terrible stench, which gave everyone headaches. On the plus side, the maps worked on the car’s screen.

Locauto's suggestion from my experience:
1. If you’re renting cars these days, maybe instead of a photo of a new car, they should post pictures of cars that are 5-7 years old — if that's all that’s available at the time.
2. Maybe also mention that cars might be 6-7 years old?
3. Be clear that if you want Apple CarPlay, GPS navigation is available for an extra fee?
4. I understand smoking isn’t allowed in cars, but then why rent a car that smells like smoke? Perhaps it should be professionally cleaned before handing it over to the next customer.

The staff were helpful, the pick up and delivery was smooth and the company was honest to deal with. Highly recommend !

The place to return the car is easy to find and very convenient.

It was a new car, the driving experience was great, and returning the car went smoothly.

It was very easy to rent this vehicle though note the storage garage is a walk from the storefront where one completes the paperwork. The car was very clean and operated without any issues. It would have been good to know that the use of USA credit cards at most Italian petrol stations is difficult as we got back to the FCO airport return.

Super easy to pick up the car. All of our information was in the system correctly. The agent presented the options for insurance in an easy-to-understand way with no pressure. People should know that the rental car office and where you pick up the car are separate, and if you have a lot of luggage, it would be somewhat difficult. Plan ahead.

The service was good, the car nice, the people friendly

Our car was not ready to pick up until about 20 minutes after our reservation even though we we there about 1/2 hour early. It was nearly impossible to find the location to return the car as well. The person that took the car from us kicked a pylon out of the way for us to park. I felt like we were an inconvenience to him.

Pick up was easy, staff was friendly and giving the car back took only 2-3 minutes.

Easy pick up and easy drop-off, and our car was a good one.

There is no good coordination between check24 in Germany and Locauto in Rome. I ended up paying twice for a car insurance.
The agent in Rome will try to scare you into an insurance.
Take care of refueling. Make sure the tank is full when you return the car. When I returned the car, the display indicated that 100 km are missing to full tank. They immediately charged me 55 Euro for that.

Very good car and good pick up. Terrible drop of at Bari, the address on the email was wrong, the address given at another car rental service ( locauto did not have a desk at this address) was wrong and took me 30 minutes to find the parking garage.

I am writing to formally dispute the additional charge of €150 applied to my rental due to a reported one-hour delay in returning the vehicle. The delay was not intentional. On the return date (March 29), the time had changed due to daylight saving adjustments, resulting in a 23-hour day rather than the usual 24 hours. Unfortunately, my watch was still set to the previous time, which caused an unintentional discrepancy in my return timing. Given these circumstances, I believe this charge is unfair and does not reflect a genuine late return. The difference was caused by a time change beyond my control, not negligence or misuse of the vehicle. I kindly request that you review this situation and issue a full refund of the €150 charge as a gesture of fairness and good customer service. I look forward to your prompt response.
