Review summary

Created with AI, based on recent reviews

Looking at 455 reviews, most reviewers were let down by their experience overall. Customers frequently reported significant dissatisfaction with the platform's customer service, describing it as unresponsive, unhelpful, and often automated. Many people encountered issues with product authenticity, receiving non-authentic or misrepresented items, or finding them in poor condition. Reviewers often felt unprotected as both buyers and sellers when problems arose. However, some customers also noted significant problems with refund policies, often being denied reimbursement or receiving only store credit for defective items. People frequently faced shipping issues, including lost packages, incorrect postage charges, and a lack of protection when carriers made errors. Many sellers felt Mercari did not protect them from unsubstantiated buyer claims or unfair charges, leading to financial losses.

No word from Mercari on supporting Walter Roach

Finally canceled my order with Walter Roach on Mercari. No communication from him for a month on the item. The day I cancel the order, he must know this through Mercari, I get a message he is looking for item. Must know it was canceled through Mercari. This seller has items on his page he does not have, my order, and takes your money. Never heard nothing from Mercari what they are doing about this seller selling items he apparently does not have. Mercari is still supporting this seller even though they have all the facts. In my mind bad site to do business with as they have never said what THEY are doing about this seller.

Best App to sell your stuff

I was skeptical at first. This is the best App to sell your household gently used items. As a seller I highly recommend. Buyers are friendly and give good ratings. Mercari is better than eBay and Poshmark.

Ultra dead

Ultra dead. Its a waste of time. Seems there are a lot of sellers but not enough buyers. And its been this way since 2018 and has not improved.

Dont waste your money on high end products! Youll get scammed!Up until 2025 Mercari was a great place…

Up until 2025 Mercari was a great place to go to buy anything. Low value yo high value, you at the least got what you paid for. Since 2025, with all the copy cat items being made cheap etc, sellers are selling for almost full price for copy, IMITATIONS and WATERED DOWN PERFUMS. DO NOT BUY PERFUME COLONGES FROM ANYONE WHO CLAIMS TO SELL AUTHENTIC! EVEN IF IT SAYS GUARANTEED! My last 2 purchases Pandora and Coach love were both diluted down but sold at almost regular price. With the Jador I even broke out so it was some kind of oil that it was diluted down with. The Coach Love, if you sprayed down 7-8pumps, which is a lot and too much, yet the smell was gone in a hour or so! I wouldn't blame Mercari but because they allow sellers to have a AUTHENTIC GUARANTEED STAMP OF APPROVAL IS BULLS**T! Allowing people to scam any and everyone! Shame on you! This was a huge disappointment. I really liked Mercari until this happened! And no it doesn't matter if you rate them and complain the sellers start messaging you back upset. So its obviously not anonymous either!

counterfeit item nightmare

After being a buyer and seller on mercari for years, I had a horrible experience the last two weeks that has still not been resolved. This guy sold me a copy of Pokemon HeartGold and when I finally received it, it was clear that this was a counterfeit and I had been ripped off. I immediately contacted their customer service, and due to slow response time and lack of understanding I opened a case with my credit card company.

One of their supervisors finally started listening and set up a return for a refund. I sent the item back, and then two days ago I get an email from mercari that they’re going to close my account for opening a dispute with my bank. I called my bank and there’s nothing they can do because Mercari hasn’t responded so they can’t even close the case. The seller who ripped me off now has his fake game back and I am getting stonewalled by their customer service.

TLDR; mercari bans accounts for trying to get money back when they receive counterfeit items. Worst customer service I have ever dealt with.

I am a highly rated veteran seller on…

I am a highly rated veteran seller on Mercari app, with 6 years and over 1500 5-star ratings… lately I had 2 issues where I was not protected as a seller and caused me to lose money on 2 sales.

One had to do with USPS label never scanned correctly despite me dropping it off in person and despite me having a receipt of the drop off.

Mercari canceled the sale and refunded buyer WITHOUT compensating me for lost goods. (Package never arrived after 2 week and I assume it was lost). I assumed I’d be covered by shipping protection since I had a receipt showing drop off, but I was not. They indicated I needed initial tracking to show up.

I sell a lot on this app and this happened only 3 times in 6 years. But I am disappointed that customer service in the past few months seems to be less competent and less caring for seller’s experience.

This was an awful company to work with

This was an awful company to work with. In the past, I sold items on Mercari and have bought things regularly, but the past two months I have had two situations where my money was held hostage for an extended period of time with no product delivered. In one instance I was told incorrect information that was being terrible towards the seller who I was buying a product from and then the tracking number said the item would not be delivered. I requested a refund since I paid for a good and did not receive it. Mercari asked that I wait a month, so I did. Then after the 30 days (on the 31st day) I had still received no new information and requested a refund. On the 32nd day they told me I would now need to wait another 30 days because a scan picked up, but they would not give me any information related to the scan. Of course then the product came and I wanted the seller to get their money so I accepted the package. All I wanted was an apology from Mercari for messing around with me and my money and they refuse. I have since closed my account and will never use this company again. A billion dollar company unwilling to work with a regular person like me does not deserve anyone's business.

Mercari's buyer protection program is a sham

Mercari's buyer protection program is a joke. In Apri I purchased a ball cap that, according to the seller, was in "great shape." Upon receiving (a week after bid was accepted), I noticed the cardboard/plastic that gives the cap's bill it's shape was cracked/broken. I initiated a return within the (very short!) three day window, submitted photos, etc. but my item return request/refund was denied citing that the item in question was true to the seller's description (great shape!) I sought to appeal, was told I didn't ask enough questions of the seller and that I could ask (beg?) the seller to initiate a return/refund. So I did and he ghosted me while Mercari released the funds to the seller leaving me zero leverage.
I'm not sure I have the space here to parse Mercari's claims, but I'll write what I can . . .
"Worry free shopping - Get what you ordered or a refund" (with the magic words) "upon eligibility." meaning Mercari decides if the buyer is eligible for refund. Add in that the photos they ask from buyers limit the ability to point out why the item did not meet the seller's description.
"Trusted Transactions - We securely process payments and release upon rating." Except I didn't rate the seller pending the dispute while Mercari released the payment to the seller BEFORE the 72 hour window for initiating auto payment was up or the dispute was completed. Why would they not suspend the clock until the dispute was resolved? At that point (after the 72 hours) I couldn't even rate the seller! No wonder they're all highest rated sellers!
"If the item is not as described in the listing, you have 72 hours to let us know. Buyer Protection gives you a full refund for eligible returns." I let Mercari know - started the dispute on the second day. And there's that read-between-the-lines caveat. A FULL refund?!? well, IF it's an "eligible return" and really - Mercari support staff have no motivation to make a seller refund to the buyer - they make their money off of sales (and that wonderfully misleading "Buyer Protection fee.")
So bottom line is - "buyer beware." Some sellers are very honest even pointing out the flaws in their items in photos. TRUST THEM if you insist on using this shady web merchant. But I happened to find a lemon seller and so I am done with Mercari who seemed not the least bit interested in making things right, putting the blame on me or denying the seller was less than honest.

MERCARI doesn’t follow their own…

MERCARI doesn’t follow their own policies. They allowed a HATEFUL DEROGATORY VICIOUS HURTFUL COMMENT from a seller about me that wasn’t warranted to be on their website . They refuse to take it off cause it’s the seller ‘s rating. If I knew a seller without cause could write such HATEFUL AWFUL COMMENTS about me and it would not be removed, I’d NEVER buy on MERCARI! Also MERCARI decides if an item is not as described and if the issue is “ significant “ enough to return for a refund, If the damage in their opinion isn’t bad enough that there is no way to use the item then they won’t give you a refund! This is my BAD experience on MERCARI. My advice RUN DON’t walk away from the MERCARI PLATFORM. They have exceptionaly high NEGATIVE REVIEWS and I can attest that they deserve all of their NEGATIVE REVIEWS! Extremely difficult to get in touch with their customers service and their customer service is extremely poor!

I did not receive the item I purchased

I did not receive the item I purchased, and when I sent that to Mercari, I received two emails - one telling me that since FedEx says it is delivered, they are closing the issue, so I asked for picture proof of the delivery - they say their is none, yep that what I am saying, how can you say it was a confirmed delivery?? Then they had the balls to say look for it, kindly ask your family or the neighbor (LOL duh), and suggest it would be helpful if I (the customer) had security footage to look at...I do, no FEDEX truck in the neighborhood when it says it was delivered. The second email stated they were going to rate this transaction as a neutral rating on my behalf, while they are investigating it would take 10-15 days to get confirmation. So how can I rate it within 72 hours????
There should be laws against doing both. Too bad I am out of money and time I spent looking for the item.

Do not buy high-ticket items on Mercari. Fake products are being sold, and Mercari does little to protect buyers when problems come up. Their customer service is nonexistent, but they’re still happy to collect their fees. If something goes wrong, expect no real help. This platform cannot be trusted for expensive purchases.

A 9-Year, 5-Star Seller's Warning: "Seller Protection" is an Absolute Scam

After 9 years, nearly 400 successful sales, and a 5-star rating, I am permanently deleting my Mercari account. Their "Seller Protection" is a deceptive scam designed to keep your money.

I recently shipped a item using their UPS Ground Saver label. The authorized drop-off location missed the initial scan, and the package was mistakenly mis-sorted into the USPS system after traveling across the country.

Mercari denied my claim. Even worse, in their official Better Business Bureau (BBB) response, their management explicitly admitted:

"Mercari cannot be held liable for carrier operational hand-offs when there is no proof of initial possession..."

Read that carefully. They fully acknowledge the package was lost due to an internal "carrier operational hand-off" error between their own partnered logistics companies (UPS and USPS). Yet, they use a technical loophole to shift 100% of the financial loss onto the seller.

If they will scam a 9-year veteran seller over a known carrier mis-sort, your money is not safe here. Take your business elsewhere.

Mercari is holding $2,500 of my verified earnings hostage due to geofencing.

"I am a verified seller with a US identity and a verified US Chase Bank account. Mercari is currently holding approximately $2,500 of my earnings and refuses to disburse them because I am temporarily traveling abroad.Despite completing my identity verification on 04/27/2026, their support (Supervisor Peter and Compliance) stated I must physically travel back to the US just to click a 'Transfer' button. This is an abusive and unreasonable barrier to accessing my private property.I have already filed formal regulatory complaints with:Florida Office of Financial Regulation (Case #138189)California DFPICFPB (Case #260428-31934678)I demand a manual ACH disbursement of my funds. I am not seeking to use the app, only to withdraw my verified income to my verified US bank. Do not use Mercari if you travel; they will freeze your money without legal justification."

torn cellophane gets a reduced value as a collectible

I’m giving Mercari 2 stars only because I had been happy with prior purchases. I bought a “factory sealed” Wii game that arrived with torn cellophane, and Mercari denied the return because the game itself was intact.

Collectors know that damaged seal wrap reduces collectible value. A factory-sealed game is about condition as much as the item itself. Very disappointing handling of the dispute.

I hate Mercari

I hate Mercari. I have been a very good customer for them. I have hundreds of items listed and 20 5 star reviews over the past year. They don’t care about any of that.
Last month I sold an item on their platform. They provided a Fed ex label for the shipping. I took it to an authorized Fed ex location on April 14. The package was picked up on April 15 but never logged into the Fed ex system. Two plus weeks later, the package is nowhere to be found. Mercari has cancelled the order, refunded the buyer and will not facilitate a Fed ex claim for me to be reimbursed for the lost merchandise. Fed ex can’t help me because Mercari bought the label. Mercari keeps accusing me of dropping the package off at USPS, which I didn’t. I have a receipt from drop off, a receipt showing Fed ex picked up the package the next day and still can’t get any help. Now they have stopped responding to my messages

I am pulling all my listings and will not be doing any further business with them.

They attract the bottom feeders of buyers anyway but I still want my refund
